THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released) — Page 4

Hey everyone, I've been sick for a while and if that wasn't bad enough, my DSL went kaboom last week. Took a while for tech support to fess up that they forgot to send me a new modem when they upgraded their hardware. >_<

I got some things to catch up on from being internet deprived for an entire week, but I haven't forgotten about this.

Still no reply from the Japanese seller yet. Starting to wonder if the message got through...

Found this link on DVD Savant's review of the Blu Ray...

Extensive comparisons between the UK DVD and original letterboxed PAL VHS. The white speck is not present, so it seems to be a different transfer! The plot thickens...

Nice to hear from you, I linked to that same comparison on last page but I didn't spot the absence of that white speck, good catch. Interesting, I have to check my UK VHS and see if it's there.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Hey, Silverwook, I just checked my PAL VHS and the dirt is there, I also checked that comparison page again, and you can see that the white speck is present on those caps as well if you look close enough, it's just a little harder to notice it as that transfer is more heavily cropped.

So... if not the Japanese transfer is from a different master, I guess we'll have to live with that dirt in frame unfortunately. I don't know how distracting it will be on modern displays but I would prefer to leave it than to have the picture information cropped out. I think I can live with it, it's the original cut of the film after all. :)

Yeah, it's not the worst thing in the world. Ironic that we have to watch the famously stark and clean THX on a dirty old transfer.

Why would it be super clean it was shot on techniscope a very grainy dirty format. The reason the DVD is that clean is because of DVNR.  Though mostly lightly applied, a bit half what they use to scrub a release to look like video.

Damn. Maybe it's burned into the print after all?

Finally heard back from the seller, and awaiting their findings compared to the screencaps.

BTW, can someone politely suggest this fellow amend his review? Lucas restored the five minutes Warners cut for the post 1977 reissue for starters. I can't believe they are totally oblivious to how much the film really has been changed!

Of you mean specks on a 35mm print those would be there is they did not handle the film very cleanly at the processing lab, or if the print itself was mishandled.   This is one film where there won't be extra quality on a 35mm print that is not there on a 16mm print, same with graffiti if the prints are pristine and not faded.

Unlike star wars which was shot on much more expensive film equipment, film stock and on true 35mm anamorphic not a blowup like Techniscope.

Actually i cannot remember if they were both shot on techniscope or if one was shot on super16. Graffiti and THX i mean not star wars.

That DVDBeaver review was taken from this review, written in 2004.  That's who you should talk to regarding review inaccuracy.

Wow. I guess the barn door has been open too long on that one!

The DVD Beaver reviewer seems to have fallen for the "Let's pretend we had CGI FX in 1970" baloney of the extra features though.

I love that this is shot in Techniscope. The format gave so many great films their intense grainy look.

Here is what the seller had to say:

"The white fleck is not present on the Japanese pressing. It has issues of its own though, with some speckling especially during the opening titles."

So. worth pursuing to combine the best of both discs? I'm satisfied it's a different transfer at this point, same print or not.

Interesting, hmm... I wonder if he is talking about the same dirt on the opening titles that is also present on both the US and UK transfers. If it really is a different transfer, it certainly is worth it imo. But I cannot help to not be a little sceptic about it, I noticed that the white speck didn't show up when viewed on my old CRT TV, so there is a slight possibility he could've missed it, and there is also the possibility of a different cropping but I guess we'll never find out if we don't give it a shot.

Well, he did mention using a Sony broadcast monitor, 1995 vinatge. The Sony's I used in college had a button to shrink the image just enough to see what is usually lost to overscan.

Pretty close to taking the plunge on getting a copy. The Japanese disc includes the trailer, which would be a nice extra to have. I don't think the DVD has the original one?

Okay, put in my order. LDDB works a little different from Ebay, as the seller has to get back to me before I can paypal it seems.

Well I sure am interested to see how this turns out for you guys, I have the Blu-ray now and I liked it, but I have never seen this version(Theatrical), so hopefully you guys do it up right.

Honestly, I didn't think the "Director's Cut" DVD/Blu-Ray of this is nearly as gratingly bad as the SEs of Star Wars, with the sole exception of the CGI monkeys at the end.  Some of the changes improve the film, and some are just kind of neutral.

But I still refuse to buy it until the pre-DC cut is released (I'd love a Close Encounters-style release, with the theatrical cut AND the cut available on laserdisc released alongside the DC).

The Blade Runner 5 Disc Blu-ray release was friggin sweet to, but see I kind of like a lot of the SE changes in Star Wars, and I grew up with the Theatrical, I watched them all with my best friend when we were kids several times(most of the time in the same day LOL)I admit some are very stupid but some are not, but this is my opinion only.

My preferred version would probably be the upcoming Blu release with the offensive SE stuff removed but keep the good, sounds like my next project.

The problem is Lucas and company are acting like nothing has been changed, hence "The Director's Cut" blue smoke and mirrors act. He restored his cut right after Star Wars gave him the clout to do so.

The company that actually did the new shots has that info buried pretty deep on their website too. They are uncredited in the DC.

It's dishonest and a bit insulting to pretend those shots were done in 1970 as the documentary implies.

And was this scene on the Blu Ray really necessary?

I like that picture. ;)

The DVD and Blu-ray includes the original theatrical trailer, but as you said, it would be a great extra, the original shortfilm could also be a cool feature. I really hope it's a different and better transfer of the film on that LD, it would be great!

The original short (THX 1138 4EB: Electronic Labyrinth, I think is the full title) is included on the 2-disc DC DVD.  I think it's on the Blu-Ray as well, but I don't know if it's in HD or not.

The disc arrived early today. I was pretty groggy this morning, and barely knew what I was signing for, until the postman said "Wow! Someone still owns a Laserdisc player?" ;)

Will try and at least spot check the transfer tonight. We're having an early fall heatwave around here, and I'd rather run my antique video gear when it's a lot cooler indoors.
