Damn, sorry to hear that.
The widescreen THX VHS tapes might have been an alternative source, were I not already fairly sure that those were plastered (WB were really ramping up on that in the 90s).
Damn! The eBay guy got back to me and "There Was a Crooked Man" has the 90s WB-in-the-clouds logo on LD.

I hate plastering.

16mm: The renders are done and ready-to-go. I'll have them available either tonight or tomorrow evening.
LD: I've finally temporally aligned all three side1s. I'm working on IVTCing currently. There was a field dropped in the master (i.e., the same field is gone on all three LDs) which causes a cadence break. I'm trying to figure out whether or not I should drop the field or insert an interpolated one.
Hi! Can I already start looking for 16mm on Usenet? But before I do that as a long time lurker I just want to express my deepest appreciation for what you guys do! :)
After this weekend, yes.
It's also now available at this mega-cool website I've been hearing about.
Thanks for the tip! But if this is the site everybody has been constantly mentioning around here, unfortunately I've no way to sneak in. Guess I should wait for this weekend to end - what a stupid thing to say though :)
No, my hint has nothing to do with how much my spleen hurts. There's no invitation required to experience its pain.
Okay, I'm officially confused now. Talking in riddles you are...
People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

I thought you had successfully degraded the logo from the DVD to match the LD? The last test I recall you showing me looked good, being an old Laserdisc guy. ;)
Where were you in '77?

Yeah. I was going to say you could just take it off the blu-ray and make it fit the laserdisc footage. You could just downscale it, blur it, and noise it up a little bit.
Luke threw twice…maybe.
Alright, so I have scrapped together a 720p reconstruction of the new 16mm release (fantastic work, guys) using the blu-ray and csd79's LD cleanup (upscaled with infognition SR plugin), synced pretty much on a frame by frame basis to the 16mm. I say pretty much, because there are added and dropped frames here and there, which I've duplicated/deleted (in one case by 'rate extended' surrounding frames). But each shot start/stop at least matches the 16mm 100%, I think. I believe all shots are 'unspecialized' now.
There is one scene that is not fully represented in the two video sources I used: when SEN talks to the kids, there is 30-60 seconds of footage where the kids are being playful and talking. It is (partially?) on the Italian cut, so I can see if I can make that screwy 4:3 footage work, but probably not. At the moment, there is a small bit of cropped 16mm footage in an otherwise color film. :P
If AntcuFaalb is okay with it (due to that footage and the soundtrack), I could send it to anyone interested in watching or giving feedback. There is still a lot of color correction to be done. Mostly un-blueing the blu-ray and matching the LD for shots that need to cut back and forth between sources a lot. Thanks to age for his SW bluray LUT. It actually works well on dark scenes that are too blue in THX.
The Italian version contains the whole scene of SEN with the kids. Unfortunately it's only in 4:3 so I'm not sure how you can possibly blend it with the rest :(
another problem: was the English audio of that scene found? I can't remember. The Italian version is dubbed
Well, the audio is there on the 16mm.
Is the 16mm also 4:3 ratio?
Is there a way to get the colour back from another source?
For the SEN scene specifically?
The only color source I know with the scene is the Italian one. Does anyone actually have the German cut?
The Italian one is so badly cropped that the kids are barely in the shot. If the characters were in it fully we would be in good shape as I could color the background using other frames.
Just for fun I'll see how it looks with the Italian clip. So, cropped to 4:3 and then back again from that. It's going to be terrible. :)

No. Though there is some image missing at the top/bottom of the scan compared to the other sources.

Our source technically has color. For just one scene we might be able to correct the red fade. I'll ask poita.

Ah, private videos are different than on youtube.
I haven't seen the 16mm scope yet, currently downloading a 720p version, but it seems very likely that this is the same cut of the film as your other 16mm print, SilverWook. Which means that it's not the original 1971 release cut. The runtime and extended SEN scene suggest so.
If the 35mm re-release prints match the 16mm versions, it means that Lucas tinkered with the film for its home video debut in 1982.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

I sent a message to poita. I think I remember that he had something that was more-or-less definitive in demonstrating it to be from 1971.

The Kodak 16mm film edge codes place it in Rochester NY in 1971.

That's a great clip with the extended footage. Was that the Italian version combined with a current print or the new 16 mm version available?
So, the complete SEN scene was on the new 16mm print? *faints*

16mm. I can post my version with the Italian but it's a monstrosity. :)
Edit: oh, the other footage is bluray, hacked into a totally different order

IIRC, that's what the other preservation did. Sorry, can't remember who was behind that one, but I just downloaded it like a month ago, so it can't be too far down the forum...

Here it is and it's on the spleen:

Easiest way would be to output the Bluray via composite video and capture that, or run the composite video into an old VCR and record it, then capture *that*.
The 'hardware' downgrading will do most of the work for you.
