Try this for starters...

it might be some of what you are looking for

As best as I can tell, this covers all of them.  I might add that part of the reason why the accusation scene at 0:20:14-0:20:46 is 2,2 seconds shorter is that the pan around the room is sped up in the DC to leave room for the new inserts.  All the footage is there, the pan just goes around the faces more quickly.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

George's bachelor party video? ;)

Did we ever establish the PAL VHS is no different than the PAL LD master?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/THX-1138-Wide-Screen-Special-Collectors-Edition-VHS-/111343133876?pt=VHS&hash=item19ec9164b4

I'm slightly leery of this, as it was once common to convert and rerecord a hard to find PAL title back onto an original tape in NTSC and sell it at a convention, in glorious second generation quality or worse. I got burned on a copy of The Black Cauldron this way back in the 90's.

And if it's in the original PAL format, I don't have anything to play it back with anyway. :/

The letterboxed UK PAL master from the 1990s got a fair bit of exposure at the time - first on the VHS and laserdisc from Tartan video, then on Warner's own releases (including the edition in the link above).

It was also one of the main attractions in an SF season on Channel 4 in 1995 (letterboxed scope being a relative rarity in broadcast at that point). I think I still have a recording of this if it's useful for posterity...

I own that UK VHS release, it's the same transfer that was used for the UK LD.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

But don't tell Marcia about it (George staying out day & night, coming back exhausted, very suspicious) ...

But seriously, she made Star Wars for him (what a wife!) and the thanks she got (aside from an Oscar, which George didn't get) was to be communist-like purged from the annals of LucasFilm:

SYFY - 3 ways in which Marcia Lucas helped save Star Wars
http://www.syfy.co.uk/news/3-ways-which-marcia-lucas-helped-save-star-wars
"Until journalist Michael Kaminski started digging into books and interviews conducted before the great Marcia purge to find out more about the woman who helped make Star Wars, and Raiders, the classics they are:
"1. Killing Obi-Wan Kenobi ...
"2. A kiss for luck ...
"3. Trench warfare ...
"Bonus: How she helped resolve Raiders ..."

The Galaxy Express - Marcia Lucas: The Unsung Hero of STAR WARS
http://www.thegalaxyexpress.net/2011/09/marcia-lucas-unsung-hero-of-star-wars.html
"... as Michael Kaminski, author of the book THE SECRET HISTORY OF STAR WARS, writes on his Web site [http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/marcialucas.html]:
"The Death Star trench run was originally scripted entirely different, ... Marcia had re-ordered the shots almost from the ground up, ... She warned George, 'If the audience doesn't cheer when Han Solo comes in at the last second in the Millennium Falcon to help Luke when he's being chased by Darth Vader, the picture doesn't work.'"

I was thinking of his more recent marriage, and hushed rumors of a giant cake that Jar Jar jumped out of, wearing the metal bikini, but okay. :P

Now THAT would be just wrong!

Let's hope Jar Jar Binks never gets closer than this to a bikini:

"But Princess, me-sa only want you-sa bikini."

Due to an error in judgement, I had to scrap the captures I did on 5/2 and re-do them on 5/17. Thankfully, I'm done and can now work entirely in the digital domain.

Thanks to Vapoursynth, my entire workflow is 10-bit.

Notes:

  * No dropped frames (the entire capture stops if a single frame is dropped and none of the captures stopped)

  * 4 inserted frames in the capture of LDs 2 and 3

  * Some anomalies that look like rot are actually in the master(!)

Now the question is: What's better, a median-of-three or a TooT?

Also, what's the deal with that white scratch on the film toward the end? It's present for several minutes.

You mean our old friend Coily?

Likely a piece of film debris that got stuck in the projector gate. (Possibly even "burned in" on the reel they used for the LD master.) He's been giving me and msycamore nightmares for quite some time.

Do any of the pre-SE home video releases have CC?

Looking at old VHS copies on Ebay, I don't see a CC logo on any of them. AFAIK, all of my other Warner LD's have CC, so this is a curious omission.

I'll check my Betamax copy for markings when I remember where it's buried. ;)

It's definitely a curious omission; especially wrt the '96/97 VHS release since one would, at least, expect that release to come with CC given the popularity of the format and how recent the release was.

I was hoping to capture the CC. Damn. :-/

Has someone hacked-up subtitles for LD preservations? If not, then how hard do you think it would be to transform the subtitles/CC on the DVD/Blu-ray to work with the version on the LD?

I made subtitles (a srt file) for the LD transfer but I don't remember if I ever began syncing it. Will have to check.

Now the question is: What's better, a median-of-three or a TooT?

I've heard that TooT is very effective but I have never been able to try it out for myself. The median script of g-force was very effective at getting rid of the herringbone pattern on my Technidisc-pressing of Star Wars but maybe it's worth a comparison to see which proves to be the most effective method? I recall that Moth3r was pointing out that a multi cap average proved to be more effective to get rid of dotcrawl but a median was more effective at getting rid of dropouts etc.

TooT and MedianOfThree both get rid of anomalies that exist in only one of the three sources; e.g., dropouts and rot.

The difference is: (The rot here is obviously 57.)

        TooT(57, 127, 137) = 132

        MedianOfThree(57, 127, 137) = 127

Since TooT averages the two most similar pixels of the three (effectively dropping the third) it seems to be the best-of-both-worlds.

However, g-force once made a pretty convincing case to me that TooT will result in more noise than MedianOfThree. I don't remember his argument and I can't think of a good one at the moment.

So, how about doing both and then averaging the two results?

Interesting suggestion!

That would yield 129(floor) or 130(ceiling) for the example in the above post.

I'm afraid of climbing down a deep rabbit hole of complexity. I prefer to K.I.S.S., ya know?

I'll do some measurements soon.

Wouldn't you need a Japanese LD player to even make use of LD-G?

 Yup. The hf9g supports

it. One of the very few from what I gather.
