Not familiar with the other versions of the film. What shots would signify that it's extended?

Just got home from the Prince Charles screening myself. It was also my first time seeing the film so am not in a position to confirm for sure what was or wasn't in the film compared to other versions, though was trying to take mental notes to report back here. A few notes on the print:
- At the very beginning there was a very brief glimpse of an MPAA "PG" card, no sign of a BBFC one.
- This was followed by the Saul Bass Warner logo, and then the Buck Rogers short excerpt.
- The print was quite pink (very similar to the 16mm colour correcting samples on the previous page of this thread), but more or less in pretty good nick, quite a few splices and scratches around reel changes as you'd expect from a theatrical print of that vintage.
- Based on thxita's translation of the extended Sen/kids scene, from what I recall that extra dialogue was not in the print tonight, just Sen talking about "combined primary economics".
So from what I understand it was the 1977 version. Hopefully someone else who knows the film better than me was there too and can chip in, but am reporting back just in case! :)
The two kids ask SEN his name. He asks them for theirs, and one whispers to the other he doesn't have to tell him. One responds that it's okay, and they tell him their names, and they all shake hands. It's less than a minute of footage not in any officially released home video version. It miraculously turned up in the battered full frame 16mm print I now have.
I've speculated in the past Lucas trimmed the scene because it makes SEN a slightly more sympathetic character.
JEDIT:And my question has been answered. ;)
Where were you in '77?
Thanks for the screener file, SilverWook!
Unfortunately, it uses a DV codec for video and I can only hear it. There is a DV driver (Panasonic) on this system but it must be a different brand/flavor and doesn't work. What brand are you using? (I'll get the proper driver from their website.)
I thought DV camcorders all used the same codec? It's straight off the tape...
It's a Panasonic PV-GS400.

This was attached to a different spot, but this is presumably what the GP card looked like when THX was released.

So did I! But ...
"Sony and Panasonic have created their proprietary versions of DV, which use the same compression scheme, but improve on robustness, linear editing capabilities, color rendition and raster size." -Wikipedia
Not only that, there was a Panasonic DV codec on this system, but it still wouldn't work.
Anyway, thanks for this new info. I tried the Panasonic website for the PV-GS400 (in case it's codec was different) but couldn't install the only available software package (it requires the camcorder connected). Also tried assorted free DV codecs (Sony, Panasonic, Cedocida, Canopus) but still no video.
It looks like I must be satisfied with your frame capture (above) for now. :D
Sorry about that. This kind of thing never happened when I shot on Super VHS. But that was when format standards actually meant something. What a pisser!

Nice shots. Thanks again! (I almost mentally-dismiss the red since developing de-fading techniques.) Oh, and love that texture ... at least in a still. :)
The McOmie/Duvall-titled shot is not from any of the trailers on the 2004 DVD -- 1 "original 1971" @ 3m; 5 "re-released" (more like "re-made") @ 2m+ each. Any idea if this is a 1971+ or a 1978+ release trailer for TV? (Lucas continues to use that same hokey "perfectly clear, perfectly clear" announcing in this trailers, so no date clues from that.)
That "texture" is a freshly painted closet door in my house. The only room with enough space to set up the projector, because it's empty.
The GP rating was long defunct by 1978, so pretty sure this is an original. The '78 trailer msycamore found sometime back fully exploited the Star Wars connection.
Are we sure that hokeyness wasn't Warner's doing?

The TV-spot is definitely an original 1971 TV-spot, the GP rating was revised the following year to PG. Thanks for posting, SilverWook!
Spaced Ranger, the spot oddly enough didn't play in my mediaplayer either but VLC handles it just fine.
Damn, just got news about the recent screening in London in another thread, don't believe I could have attended even if I knew about it. Great to hear a few here went to the screening, hope you guys had a good time. Can post the different TV-version and theatrical version of that short scene with Donald Pleasence if you guys are interested.
Haven't visited this thread lately due to being pissed off and burned out on THX with all the hurdles getting a simple LD-preservation out there. Spaced Ranger still haven't received the stuff I sent him last year. :( I presume it to be lost after all this time. Damn postal service, I lost two packages in the mail last year, can you believe that!
Anyway, I need to go back a few pages and read what's been going on...
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

First time seeing the film, but it included the Buck Rodgers trailer before it, which leads me to believe it's the late 70s rerelease version.
The Buck Rodgers trailer was in the original 1971 release as well, a 1971 review in Variety mentioned it. But everything seems to indicate you guys saw the 1978 re-release version.
The five 1888' reels on the BFI label explains the running time they had on their site.

Welcome back msycamore! I was also guilty of abandoning the subtitling in Italian that many italians are expecting since we've never seen the "original" version of the film here. So your disappearance from the project gave me some time to sort some situations. I also gave an exam yesterday so I can finally finish the subs.
Gets me raging when stuff goes missing in the mail, I've lost plenty that was shipped at my girlfriend's house. I know the feeling.
I lost a damn computer in the mail. >_<
"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)
I finally managed to sit down for a couple of afternoons and finish the subtitles in Italian for the US preservation of THX... some of you might remember from many pages ago that Italians have never seen the 1976, nor the 1978 version of this film so, in exchange of providing the rare Italian cut of this film (with extra SEN scene) I asked msycamore if to the preservation DVD we could add Italian subtitles as an extra, I was to make the subtitles for my fellow countrymen... that was 2 years ago, LOL.
Before I forward them to you msycamore I passed them to Leo for the needed proofreading. I hope you will still finish your fantastic preservation project... may the two-years-waiting-time-for-my-subtitles be of inspiration to you my friend ;-)

Yeah definitely the '78 version, also it had the Saul Bass Warners logo.
The big news is that I now have a Runco LJR-II in excellent condition. Yay! ^_^

Well ... even though it wasn't that same announcer on the "re-released trailers" (2004 DVD), it was the same hokey repetitions and even overlapping-echo repetitions approach. The former may have been Warner's, but the latter are undeniably GL's (now-a-days, nothing gets done but by George himself or with the Lucas OK).
If I knew nothing of THX 1138 and watched any of those trailers, I would think "low-budget trash" and promptly move along to the next film. (Anyone remember the original Star Wars trailer that ended with a garbage-pail shaped "robot" tipping over and sounding like a garbage pail hitting the ground? Yep, same George Lucas. ... Just connecting the dots.)

Thanks for the heads-up!
Had the VLC player installed, updated the OS for a known issue with older versions of this player (microsoft.com: The Windows XP Low Fragmentation Heap Algorithm Feature Is Available for Windows 2000), and became able to watch SilverWook's TV-spot. :)

Whoa! Nice machine!

Looking forward to new, THX 1138 laserdisc-transfer awesomeness!
Will be interesting to see what that player can do. (I'd especially like to see how it handles discs with mild to moderate laser rot.) Such high end models were way out of my reach back in the day.

I'm getting very close to having everything in order for my THX 1138 captures.
My capture chain will be Runco LJR-II =(svideo)=> Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle (Thunderbolt).
The Runco LJR-II's builtin comb filter is better than my Extron YCS-100 because it was tweaked by MSB specifically for it, so that's one less A->D->A conversion in the chain. ;-)
I own three copies of the US LBX LD and I intend on doing a full median-of-three (basically, a TooT) with them. Thankfully, the Blackmagic Media Express software stops capturing if even a single frame is dropped, so I don't have to worry about any dropped frames in my completed captures.
Is it easy to manually IVTC this beast? How many wonky cadence changes does it have?
JEDIT: Also, do we have a bit perfect rip of the PCM track?

The original press kit lists what was available from the studio in 1971. I think someone else here has that.
msycamore found the 1978 reissue trailer a while back. It's no longer online last time I checked, and the poster never responded to inquiries, but I was able to download it. It's 320X188, which seems like an odd resolution to me.
Asked bobgarcia74 about restoring it in higher resolution, (the titles would be easy to recreate) but never heard back. Haven't seen him around here in a long time.

The 78 trailer is still here.
I'll be darned. It was down for a time...
