And I haven't continued the subtitling yet, exam period, sorry msycamore.
This is going to be one of the greatest projects ever in this place.

This is really interesting...
Never knew the original THX short screened with Star Wars in Japan.

^ That's pretty cool.
Thanks Darth Hade, for the encouraging words, hope I can live up to your expectations. ;)
Haven't been able to start working on the audio yet, have a borrowed laptop at the moment and I don't want to install all the software needed for this on this computer.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

As this is on hiatus until I get a new machine, it's cool thxita.
I would like to know how you guys want me to treat the audio, it's Dolby 1.0 mono and that's how it's going to be (you can encode it as 2.0 dual-mono but after some searching around on this matter it's not the way to go). Anyway, what I wondered is, do you want me to have it as uncompressed PCM audio and sacrifice precious video bitrate or will an AC-3 encode suffice?

My vote is for unsacrificed video bitrate.
I could live with a 448kps DD audio track. I still have my Laserdiscs if I start missing the PCM too much. ;)
Is there going to be room for the trailer and some stills? Do we include the "lost" SEN scene from the 16mm, or save it for the "Grindhouse" version?
I've been thinking the trailer could be restored using the LD footage. Someone around here probably has the skills to recreate the flying logo at the beginning, and the title card at the end.
Where were you in '77?
Some people may say that a 448kbps for a mono DD track is overkill but I agree with you Silver, Walter Murch's groundbreaking sound design is half the experience of this film. I might even do an encode with the uncompressed PCM for you and those who want that.
I'm not really sure about stills, the trailer and the "lost" SEN scene, it sure would've been nice with an additional disc of extras but right now I feel that I want this as uncomplicated as possible so we can get this film out to people as soon as possible with all the time this have taken me. I actually lost most of my additional THX material I had in my HD crash, think I still have the radio spots though.
The SEN scene Puggo sent me is safe, I don't know, maybe his planned transfer will do? I hope my answer doesn't disappoint you too much, but I just want this done as soon as possible even though it was me who originally suggested many of those extras. Maybe someone else could help make a bonus feature DVD to accompany the main feature disc? that would certainly make things easier for me.
Nice idea about the '78 trailer, although I think I still would like to have the original as well even though the quality leaves a lot to be desired.

By all means, get it done and out there, then take a vacation before I spring any new projects on you. ;)
We can always revisit the extras later. I still need to photograph that old newspaper article. I decided it's much too fragile to put through a scanner.

Do we have anybody on Twitter? Maybe JW Rinzler would answer a question about what WB cut from the '71 version. He probably has that info fairly available.
Worth a shot.
And Dr. Lizardo will be haunting my dreams tonight. Thanks!

Would the PCM track take that much more space since it's 1.0? I downgraded a project to to 448kbp/s mono once, but that was because DVD Studio Pro was having issues.

I think PCM has to be two channels no matter what the actual contents.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Not that I know of. Many Blu-ray releases, especially Criterion ones that feature PCM mono usually have a 1.0 track.

Cool. Didn't know Blu Ray could do that. Criterion is about the only one giving original audio tracks PCM love though. ;)

You're correct SilverWook, if I keep it as a PCM track it will be two channels, so it takes up an excessive amount of space no matter what but you just need to force your receiver to play it through ProLogic, then it plays out of your Center speaker just as it should, dual mono have a tendency to sound very distant from the action on screen.
If I do an AC-3 1.0 encode, it will play correctly out of the Center speaker by default. I doubt you'll hear a difference between a 448kbps AC-3 encode and the PCM but there's a possibility you'll see a difference in the video.
Great idea, Baronlando. So are anyone of us on Twitter?

Just wanted to let you guys know that I have a new working PC now, so I will try to get to work on the audio when I go on vacation in about two weeks. Looking forward to get this out there.

Good news! Thanks for the update.

Puggo, if you're reading this. I find that the VirtualDub filter Color Mill is a very nice and easy to use color grading tool, if you're going to try and correcting the 16mm THX sometime. I have experimented a little bit with the clip you sent me, I can post some examples later. I know that you are busy with other projects at the moment but I just thought I would mention it.

I'm still trying to find a trailer or two to go with that. I'm taken with the idea of THX "grindhouse" style now.
Archive.org has many of the 1970's era theater bumpers for download, but I don't know if they're of high enough quality for our purposes...

Agree.
Love those. :)
Didn't Rodriguez resurrect that one on one of his films... or was it Tarantino who used that one for Kill Bill or was it for Death Proof?

I think it was the Grindhouse double feature. It turned up on a couple Hercules DVD's I got earlier this year.

I got a few 35mm film cels from a THX 1138 trailer recently and I've scanned them at decent resolution. I'd be happy to upload them somewhere if anyone was interested. PM me.
I played around with the 16mm footage today to see if I could get it to look somewhat acceptable, here's my result on "The Lost Scene." http://www.sendspace.com/file/twyqdo
Let me know what you think. Ignore the audio, at the moment I don't know what the heck is causing it to get out of sync!
Before
After
I'm afraid there's not that much color left to work with but I do think it's watchable in this state, maybe Puggo or someone else with more experience than me when it comes to color correcting could get it to look even better for an eventual "grindhouse DVD."

That is way better than when I was watching it projected onto a blank sheet of paper taped to the wall! ;)
