Finally done with the video section of this project (I hope) the dreaded audio syncing is left.

Thanks for the update. I can't imagine the audio will give you any unusual problems.

Where were you in '77?

Hopefully not, but it scares me a little as I have limited experience in the field.

Sorry to veer off topic here, but I got a weird spam email on the hotmail account I use for OT stuff. It had a fake Original Trilogy header and at least one other member's email address it was sent to.

The only personal emails I've sent or received in the past year with that account have been to do with THX. You guys might want to check your PC's for viruses or worms just to be on the safe side. PM me if you need any more details.

That's good to know. (I do a complete scan every week.) Is there anybody else from here you have emailed lately? Present company excepted of course.

I'm not sure, maybe I emailed Puggo some months ago.

On a more on topic note, did converting the PAL Laserdisc footage pose any unusual problems?

Not at all, converting the video from PAL to NTSC is actually an easy and quick process, just had to match it framewise with the NTSC LD, the PAL transfer doesn't lack as many frames as the NTSC transfer does at the reel changes. Making it blend with your transfer was a little more problematic, as the contrast, brightness, saturation and colors differed a little bit. It will not be perfect but I think it looks better than if I hadn't spliced in the PAL source. I can post a video sample for you...

Sorry, had trouble uploading the sample yesterday. Anyway, here it is:  http://www.sendspace.com/file/12m4ry

a short clip from the point where it goes from PAL source to NTSC source, nothing too exciting, just to showcase the difference between the two sources.

Thanks for uploading the clip. It looks pretty seamless. :)

One preservation project I'm contemplating is going to need footage from PAL and NTSC DVD's to work.

No problem, let me know if you guys want to see more samples, I'll try to post screencaps later today of the pink tint I have reduced so you guys know what I'm talking about.

Let's discuss it when THX is done, and you have had a chance to rest.  ;)

How is this THX LD rip coming along?

I was pleasantly surprised to see that one was in the works, with an eye to quality.

Well, this is a project that should've been finished a long time ago but have unfortunately taken a long time, mostly due to an old malfunctioning PC which have now finally died. :(

The video-part is done, it's basically just the audio sync and encoding left, as I have been without a computer for some time, I haven't been able to work on it, but I will hopefully have a new one in a week or two.

Sorry to hear you're still having PC issues.

Yes, it's very frustrating but I guess it was just a matter of time before it died completely, it was an old one. Hopefully I'll have a new pc pretty soon.

Hello,

After looking through this thread I'm a bit confused which version of THX is currently under working. Is it the 1971 Original Theatrical Release or 1978 Restored Cut?

Also, when the work is finished will it be available through MySpleen?

Thanks!

Hi there, it is the 1978 restored cut that's in the work. The US letterbox laserdisc is what is used as the base but one reel where the framing was awkward was replaced by utilizing the UK laserdisc, the original WB opening logo and titles are restored by utilizing the 2004 DVD which still had the original titles left in (the green colored opening titles was for some reason white or completely faded on the widescreen LD's, they were originally green in '78 and on earlier video releases).

The 1971 original theatrical release would be impossible to reconstruct perfectly without the original audio (even some parts of the audio mix was altered by the studio according to Lucas). But the biggest problem of course is the editing, we have no idea to know for sure what the WB-cut was, but the '76 original Italian release tell us a little bit on how it may have been, but we'll never know for sure if not an old print would happen to surface. At least on American Graffiti we know exactly what scenes were added in '78. I strongly suspect the original Italian release reflect the WB-editing minus the opening, but information on the original release of THX is unfortunately very hard to come by.

Thanks!

I will probably upload it there after first sending out copies to everyone that have helped out with this.

Hi,

Thank you for your detailed answer, it's an interesting bit of film history. Also it's quite heartening to see such bunch of enthusiasts involved in projects of this sort. Can't wait to see the outcome.

I don't want to leech on someone else's hard work so if there is any way an outsider like me can help please let me know.
