It wasn't me, didn't see your earlier post until now.

I will probably get back my computer at the end of this week.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

^^ Nice. ;)

Seems my old PC have come back to life again, so maybe I can finally manage to finish this old project. :)

Glad to hear the PC is working again.

I hope to get to work on scanning or photographing that magazine and the other THX items before the end of the year.

At the moment in Italy THX is on a TV channel but I can't check which version it is because it's a premium channel (you need to pay to watch it). Leonardo made me notice that in the description on their website it even says that it's supposed to be "4:3" which suggests it's not the new DVD version. Damn it could be the Italian pre-DVD version and I can't even check nor record it! It's so annoying!

Damn! Any chance they will show it again?

SciFi is a basic cable channel on this side of the pond.

Alas, they never show anything of this caliber these days.

It would be a little weird if they still had the rights to air one of the old versions, but you never know...

I have started with the color correction again, will post some before/after samples for you as I promised earlier when I get the time, you don't have to worry, I'm pretty sure you will like it when you see what I have done, it will just be a subtle thing to get rid of the pink tint.

Any idea what's on the VHS tape yet?

msycamore, through my blog it's building up a discrete interest and expectation towards the original version of THX that you're working to preserve and that we've never seen in Italy. I know it's a pain in the arse but may I insist on the request of having Italian subtitles on that disc? I would of course take care of the translation

Sorry for the lack of updates on this never ending project, I was very close to lose everything I had done on this recently due to a HD-crash, (very scary as I didn't have a backup at that point due to my earlier computer issues) thankfully, I was able to rescue everything. My luck continues...

thxita, if you want you can start doing the Italian subs in the form of an srt-file against my English file I sent you way back, if you still have it, the timings are wrong in that one, but it's all the subs for the restored cut and we can take care of the timings later.

Yes I'll start from that then ;-)

Lucky that you managed to save everything msycamore! Your luck continues indeed!

When at the beginning of the movie the guy is at the drugs cabinet, the voice suggests him to call 348-FUN... and then the voice is interrupted. Do you have an idea what could have been?

Unless msycamore can beat me to it, I'll try to check and see if the LD had closed captions for that scene, if at all. (My DVD recorder has been pretty good at preserving CC unless a TBC is involved. )

It sucks that HDMI doesn't pass through the old caption signal.

I'll try to be as precise as I have been with the English subtitles of the Italian version, so I might be asking you some weird stuff from time to time.

For example I just read that the "are you now or have you ever been?" line was from MacCarthy period when they usd to ask "are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?".

Thanks Silver for checking some stuff, the LD might have more info on it. The DVD just cuts the words exactly as they are heard.

thxita, that particular line is stolen from the 2004 DVD subs, to me it actually sounds like the audio is cut off on call 348 five, but the DVD subs had it FUN, it's your choice.

For example I just read that the "are you now or have you ever been?" line was from MacCarthy period when they usd to ask "are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?".

Yeah, Murch or Lucas talk about it in the audio commentary IIRC.

Well, the italian subs in that scene read "5" so I guess it was indeed just "5". I'm afraid I'm looking at the DVD subs then (that's what I've found on my PC). Could you re-send me the subtitles for your version msycamore?

Author

I'll do, but I'm pretty sure that line is just me stealing the line from the official subs, it was a long time ago I did them so I don't remember exactly, but I can resend it. I was pretty meticulous when doing them but don't hesitate to question my decisions if you think something looks funny. :)

Well I'm checking side by side with the DVD version and there is a scene that is not on the txt file so it might be the correct one afterall. Nevermind then, I'll move on ;-)

Well, I did take a look at my subs and there is no "FUN", you have either the wrong file or I corrected that myself after I had posted it. Anyway, here it is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/nnurom

Can't find any captions playing my original U.S. LD capture in VLC. Going to try and check the jackets later to see if any of them have the CC logo. Japanese LD's usually didn't have them, IIRC.

Thanks. I think I got confused, I was reading FUN on the DVD but it read 5 on the srt file.

Listen, the old guy asking for help says that he "bought one of these yesterday" but it doesn't fit his consumer. What the hell did he buy and what is a "consumer"? Is he referring to that "sucking trash can" where THX dispose his red thing perhaps?

@Silver: thanks Silver but save your strength, I might need of you Laserdisc CC again. ;)

What does DTO screen stand for?

The red (and blue) things are referred to as a "dendrites" in the DVD commentary. They earn credits working merely to buy them over and over again. They serve no function or other purpose.

First couple times I saw the movie when younger, I thought it was some sort of container for their daily drug supply! Probably because we see another fellow arrested desperately clutching his dendrite as he's taken away.

I always thought "consumer" meant something else, (as in the SE's don't fit my consumer) but the urinal like device in THX's apartment must be it.

Someone ankle deep in dendrites because they can't dispose of them, while still dutifully buying more would have been really funny. ;)
