Yes, I'm saving all the things on my computer right now, all the THX files are already safe, so no worry.

I hope that just a reinstallation of windows will solve my issue... had you not a similar issue some time ago Silverwook?

Very happy to hear that Puggo found the time to work on your print. That is great news! Thank you Puggo! :)

I haven't had any major problems lately, aside from the need to get better editing software. It's not a major issue unless I have to tackle some of the other preservation projects I have in mind all by myself.

One last thing. I figured this might be of interest since it's related to THX-1138 and could be used an extra bonus material.

It is 1971, THX 1138 was released on March 11, American Zoetrope is spiraling towards certain doom, Lucas has become even more disillusioned with Hollywood than he was during his stint on McKenna’s Gold, and where exactly things go from here for the upstart and its members is all up in the air. And while American Zoetrope and Coppola had slowly started to cause waves — mostly due to THX’s failure as it were, though also because Coppola wasn’t afraid of touting American Zoetrope a state-of-the-art facility which could outmatch Hollywood, and that the company (and thus himself) was the future of filmmaking — Lucas was little more than a promising student who had made an obscure sci-fi film which opened small and died fast.

During the summer of ’71, as all of this is happening, Gene Youngblood interviewed the then 27-year-old Lucas for a Los Angeles-based educational TV station, KCET in an hour-long program called George Lucas: Maker of Films.

Good find. I think someone already did a preservation of this a while back.

Have you guys already seen this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VHS-Pelicula-THX-1138-George-Lucas-Edicion-1989-cine-VHS-THX-1138-/180736843036?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_186&hash=item2a14c15d1c

It says 1989 with a run-time of approximately 88 minutes.

I've heard of tapes with mold problems, but YIKES! Makes me grateful I live in a relatively dry climate.

Hopefully, it's just a Portugese dub of what we already have.

I am a bit late to the party with this but if anybody has any use for a 1991 dated FOR PHILIPPINE HOMEVIEWING ONLY fullscreen VCD over two discs, let me know.

For what it is worth, I have always thought that the LD vs DC DVD versions as a splitscreen comparison would be brilliant. If I ever learn the skillz, I will give it a shot.

I was beginning to think I hallucinated seeing this on Ebay several years ago!

Could you take some pics of it or post some screen caps?

A bit more info. The VCD box is dated 1991 but the files on the disc are dated July 2003. Runtime is 84 mins and 54 seconds. Some random site I found says that the Phillipines are NTSC M. If someone can tell me the time frame of the screenshot on post 947, I will try and do the same shot from the VCD.

Was the VCD in pan & scan format?

Have a borrowed computer at the moment, hopefully I can get my old one to work after the re-installation, also received the Italian tape, seems to be in pretty rough shape going just by the case and cassette, not bad like the mold problems seen in that ebay auction though. ;) we'll see if it will be any better than we already have but that will be at a later time...

Msycamore, my PC is not the latest technology but is not bad either (Intel Core 2 duo E4600 @2.40Ghz, 4GB of RAM, Vista Business, GeForce graphic card plugged on a 32" led TV) and I have adobe premier and virtualdub if needed but I have no idea what exactly are you doing with this film. If it's just a case of "apply these filters and wait hours for the rendering" I can do it for you. I doubt I can do more complicated things though. You can PM me if you want to discuss a possible involvement of mine.
Let me know

Fullscreen and very fixed shots. I can see no sign of any scanning going on......

thxita, I don't own a VCR myself anylonger, so I'll not find out what condition it is in until I am able to borrow one for the eventual capturing. But that is something I won't tackle until this current project is done.

Thanks, that's good to know, in worst case scenario I can of course send all the files for someone else to help finish it, but hopefully things will work out.

I finished scanning the print of thx.  So now the question is, what do I do with the scans?  Msycamore, which exact scenes do you need?  Keep in mind that the scans are frame-by-frame, so they'll require pulldown.  Audio is grabbed separately, so they will require careful sync.  If you let me know exactly which scenes you need, I can give you the raw stuff to work with.  It will also require heavy red reduction.  I'm assuming you'd prefer to do all of the above yourself.

After that, I'll probably put together a dvd-5 of the whole film.  It won't be great, but I might as well.

Nice, that's great! I'll only need the complete scene involving the character SEN (Donald Pleasence) talking to a couple of kids. If you're not sure and familiar with the scene I'm talking about, it starts approximately around the 71 minute mark.

I'm willing to give it a shot. :)

Even if it's almost in unwatchable quality, I will be happy if you do. :)

Yeah, at one point we talked about maybe take use of the 16mm print to restore the opening titles but I don't think that will be needed, as degraded DVD footage will be a better alternative. By the way, how is the titles handled on the print, are they cropped or squeezed?

You know how when you buy stuff on Ebay, there's an option to donate a buck or two to a charity? The one I gave to at checkout tonight is a charity run by Robert Duvall!

My mind is blown!

I now have the files Puggo sent me of SilverWooks print and as you've already seen it's very red-shifted but I think it can be corrected quite well. Thanks again Puggo for scanning it and SilverWook for providing the print. I should also tell you that a simple re-install of Windows didn't solve my computer issue :( a friend of mine good on computers is working on solving the problem. I hope I can get back to work on this as soon as possible.
