Btw, do you happen to know if there's any avisynth filter that can simulate telecine wobble/gate weave?

Hmm, not off the top of my head, maybe it would be possible to do with the vdub deshaker plugin since it has a 2pass mode - run the first pass on sample video with gate weave and second pass on still video? Just a thought.

I have searched for such a filter but with no luck, I will try out what you suggested, thanks for helping out, appreciated.

Another thing not related to THX, but I choose to ask it here anyway, any idea why the opening and end titles on American Graffiti is window boxed on LD and DVD, thick black bars at the side of the frame. Does it have something to do with the Techniscope format or was it just a way to avoid overscan on old TV's? is the Blu-ray also window boxed on the end titles and the opening Universal logo?

IIRC, it's to avoid overscan. I've seen an old movie or two that were windowboxed all the way through as well. It really shouldn't be needed on Blu Ray, but we all know studios sometimes use an HD master that more than a few years old.

Ok, I have finally decided to let the white static dirt in frame stay, sorry but my computer is simply not up to the task, it would've been nice but those 15 minutes will at least be more pleasing to the eyes than the NTSC transfer was, the bad cropping actually bothered me more than the dirt.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, why does the opening titles on the LD-transfers seem to be a little bit stretched compared to the DVD transfer, well it seems the aspect ratio on the LD's was a little bit off, take a look at the circles on the LD in this example:

Laserdisc

DVD

Haven't checked if this is consistent throughout the film yet but it will be corrected. I don't know how usual this was in the early days of letterbox transfers. I recently discovered that my Empire SWE LD seem to have slightly incorrect aspect ratio in places as well, but we all know the issues with the first film in that set.

I can live with Coily if you can. ;)

Techniscope is such an unusual film format, that they may have simply used a 35mm release print for the old video masters that had the slight distortions in it. How does the ITA compare?

P.S. I've asked Puggo if he can capture the Warner/Kinney logo off the 16mm print. Keep your fingers crossed.

Yeah, could maybe be the reason for it. Erri's original AVI-file is 720/576 = 5:4, but you can see its true aspect ratio if you adjust it to display in 4:3 in VLC:

I'm definitely going to use the DVD for the opening credits but it would be really nice to see your print captured by him. :)

Btw, the few that have seen the Italian DVD, how was the subtitling on it, was it hard to follow? I know that some computer display translations is a little problematic on it but I'm curious if it was overall OK.

There was one point I would like to correct, when LUH and THX are listening to the news and there's a talk about fugitives being caught. There was some pointless repetition there that could have been shortened... nothing major but I didn't tell because I didn't want to burden you more than necessary msycamore.

Leo have you seen it yet? I keep forgetting who I gave this film to

The 16mm is really worn out though. It's main value is having the extended SEN scene in English. That alone will make a good extra. :)

Someone did suggest using the print for making THX "grindhouse" style several pages back.

I think THX is gridhouse enough lol

Is the Warner/Kinney logo from the 16mm print a static image? Because in that case I can ask my friend to "restore" it in photoshop (the same guy who worked on the Ciriello's artwork cover)

Just point it out to me and I can make corrections for possible future use, you never know what the Italian tape I ordered will bring us. SilverWook haven't seen it yet either as he wait for me to sending him the disc, sorry for taking so long Silver.

It would be really cool but I can understand if Puggo doesn't as I'm sure he have lots of other prints to take care of.

The extended SEN scene would be great to have as an extra. :)

I catch the drift ;-)

At 14.04

Cinque uomini sono fuggiti dal centro riabilitazione DD2...

riacciuffati sono stati sottoposti a trattamento duro

Change the subtitles of those two lines with these:

Five men escaped from rehabilitation center DD2

all five have been caught and given hard treatment

or

Five men fled rehabilitation center DD2

all five have been caught and given hard treatment

If you watch the scene again you'll see that the dialogue subtitled in English is kinda "repetitive" on the fact that they have been caught. Must be due to too many revisions. Sorry about that.

(I think the "all five" was your modification from my original translation but I like it. The news reporter literally says "once caught they have been given hard treatment")

Aside from the fade in and fade out, the logo is static.

The ITA version certainly gets into grindhouse territory.

I know, I've got some hopes for the tape msycamore bought! Finger supercrossed!

If it's a static logo send me the highest quality image of it that you can get and I'll forward it to my photoshop magician friend. The fading can be reproduced

That's because the final version of the subs are only on DVD, msycamore worked on those and had to change the timing too if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps I can "grab" them from the DVD, if somebody can explain me how to.

... or I just mail you the DVD lol

I was just checking some other scenes. If I may say so... I'm particularly proud of the subtitles in the scene "kids on the escalator". I had to find  translated words all beginning with M, which required a dictionary in some cases. The only doubt is about the very last word that I translated as "correct". The doubt is in the Italian audio, not being very clear. I hear "ELATTO", I guess it's "ESATTO" (correct). Hopefully msycamore's tape will be clearer!

By the way, check out how it looks on the shelf (sorry for the low quality, I took the picture with my mobile)

Will do, thanks! I can also upload the revised subs so that people can remux the DVD if they want.

About the current project, a second disc accompanying the main feature disc with extras is the plan and it would be really nice if someone could help me out with creating that disc to speed up this project so that I can focus on the movie only part. I would like it to at least include:

  • Lucas' original student short
  • Featurette "Bald"
  • Original and re-release trailer
  • Radio spots
  • Deleted footage (SEN's conversation with the children)
  • Photos etc.

I would love it if someone could help me out with this to speed things up as I have no experience of doing DVD-menus, let me know and I'll send you the material for it. Thanks.

Bella, Erri!

You guys did great with the translation. Love that pic of the DVD. :) It also makes me happy to see that you own Dark Star, love Carpenter's early work, after The Thing it went downhill.

The Italian DVD is still seeded on MySpleen last time I checked.

Edit: And what did you say Leo? ;)

I would make the DVD/menus, but only if you're not in a super rush to see it.

Nice! that would be geat, thank you for helping out reave! very kind of you.:) No hurry, I'm just happy if someone else can do it as it will ultimately speed up things than if I tried to learn how to do this myself once I'm done with the main feature and then I may also find the time to do the subtitles for this one. Thanks!
