I lucked out and there wasn't a bidding war. I hope the magazine isn't too big for my scanner when I get it!

Even if you can scan parts of it, they can be joined together. In that case send them to me and I'll see to that ;-)

I'll keep that in mind. :)

I just hope a 40 year old newspaper supplement doesn't spontaneously combust when scanned!

Funny that the penciled reference is to a Paul Golding/Lucas USC film film that is unavailable.

In fact i have not been able to find the Emperor, or Anyone lived in a pretty how town, or Herbie either.  Nor the full version of the desert tone poem.

Someone uploaded a very good quality version of filmaker on youtube.]

Freiheit, electronic labyrinth and a man and his car are all on DVD.

See if Lucas won't restore the oot there is very little reason for him to pay to restore the student films, which the master negatives are probably in USC's holdings anyway. I think Lucas has lower quality copies. See the bonus THX short on the directors cut DVD, that is pretty poor quality in comparison to other releases i have seen. The only positive thing the grain was not removed and the audio is the real mono track and not a fake 5.1 as on the short films dvd.

Glad to hear you got the tape. The magazine arrived today.

Why does that trick sound like something SEN does in the movie that gets him in trouble? ;)

I didn't have a chance to open the package up until today. It's definitely a newspaper supplement, the pages aren't stapled, so that will make things a little easier!

There are more handwritten notes on the actual article I hope survive the scanning process, they are a little faded with age. There is also a bonus photo on another page of some extras showing off their fresh shaved heads.

The pages are slightly too wide for my old flatbed scanner, so I will have to scan in segments. Does it matter where I make the "break" vertically or horizontally?

No but try to scan them with the same orientation (tilting as little as possible)

Sorry for the lack of updates but I have had some damn computer problems again! :( I am still testing out some different filters for degrading the opening titles...

Take your time, msycamore.

We know it is worth waiting for.

Thanks, Darth Hade, I hope so. It's just that it feels like I have worked on this forever, and my shitty computer keeps getting in the way, I really need to upgrade.

Msycamore, huge breakthrough about the story of the Italian release.

In a book fair I found a guy selling all sorts of cinema posters (the father of this man owned a cinema back in the days). I asked if he had THX and he said unfortunately he didn't bring it but he does. He told me he had two sets, one from the first release and another from the second release of the movie that came years later. So the film was indeed released in Italy in two occasions (first release and then Lucas re-release 8 years later), this is confirmed.

I told him about our project and he was happy to know that we used Averardo Ciriello artwork for the DVD cover. He told me the very first release had that cover while the second release came with photographic posters (not artwork).

2004 version has not been released in theaters in Italy.

The guy lives in Ravenna he told me I could go visit him. Italian posters from the 70's guys, if anyone wants them he sells them for 10 euro each (way cheaper than ebay) and he's got plenty of them (the full set that they expose in the theatre hall and outside). I think I'll buy myself the Averardo Ciriello one. I would need to drive up to Ravenna which is not too far but neither behind the corner. However I'm curious to go there and photograph the stuff he has, probably there are posterst we don't know about.

Well this is my news, if you fancy updating what we know about the history of Italian release

That is great and interesting info, will have to make some edits on the info text then.

Then I wonder what version it is on the VHS that is on its way to me, the '76 version or the re-release. When you say a second release 8 years later, do you mean 8 years from '76? that would place it in '84, or do you mean 8 years from '71 which would place it only 1 year after its US re-release which sounds correct.

He was probably referring to the 8 years between the american version, in Italy we usually think in terms of "american release" dates. In any case when I'll visit him (eventually) I can't wait to read the dates on those lobby cards and posters... I do hope dates were printed on them.

I also wonder what version was released on VHS. I can only suppose the first version since the second was specifically made the way Lucas wanted. This would give credits to the theory that the Italian VHS version is actually the original theatrical release? Or still an exclusive cut as we currently believe if I'm not mistaken.

Does he have star wars italian posters?

I'll call him and ask if you want. He had Easy Rider so I don't see why not. Although he might have sold them already. It's not the easiest man to reach, he's a bit old style: no emails, no internet, only phone lol

Ok, I have finally decided to let the white static dirt in frame stay, sorry but my computer is simply not up to the task, it would've been nice but those 15 minutes will at least be more pleasing to the eyes than the NTSC transfer was, the bad cropping actually bothered me more than the dirt.

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, why does the opening titles on the LD-transfers seem to be a little bit stretched compared to the DVD transfer, well it seems the aspect ratio on the LD's was a little bit off, take a look at the circles on the LD in this example:

Laserdisc

DVD

Haven't checked if this is consistent throughout the film yet but it will be corrected. I don't know how usual this was in the early days of letterbox transfers. I recently discovered that my Empire SWE LD seem to have slightly incorrect aspect ratio in places as well, but we all know the issues with the first film in that set.

What procedure were you using that's too hard on your computer? Not possible with some form of delogo in avisynth?

I was going to get rid of it in After Effects, I could maybe try out some delogo filter in avisynth and see if it works, thanks for the suggestion. Btw, do you happen to know if there's any avisynth filter that can simulate telecine wobble/gate weave?

Another thing not related to THX, but I choose to ask it here anyway, any idea why the opening and end titles on American Graffiti is window boxed on LD and DVD, thick black bars at the side of the frame. Does it have something to do with the Techniscope format or was it just a way to avoid overscan on old TV's? is the Blu-ray also window boxed on the end titles and the opening Universal logo?
