According to the DVD commentary, it's out on a breakwater. ;)

Have you tried looking at an online map (MapQuest, Yahoo Maps, etc.) with satellite-photo views? That might be able to narrow down the position.

Of course, unless the original site is now luxury condos, you may still have a very distinctive (and solid?) terrain outline to make a match.

There was an interview/remembrance of Lucas using a telephoto lens to shoot across the studio lot for the white limbo interior sequences. I'd expect he'd use the same lens (???mm) for this shot (no extra rental charge).

They did mention using a special lens for the shot. It took a couple tries to get the shot as fog would roll in before sunset.

I've pretty much pinpointed the site, based on which direction they had to shoot in face the sun. All the development in the area hasn't affected the breakwater, although it may have had more rocks added since 1970.

It's a matter of finding someone to go out there with me at this point, and be there around sunset. The only way to get there is a beach road that isn't always open to traffic, (may be seasonal) and it's a bit of a walk if it's closed. Hard to be incognito lugging a camera tripod.

I'm guessing things must be busy, but any progress on the laserdisc capture/assembly (or is it "stand by scope one")?

Good! I finally have a working Usenet upload workflow on my Mac OS X box (7z, par2, and sanguinews), so I plan to upload the raw soon.

The MatchGrade operation in [an excellent program] is able to calibrate the color bars I captured from GGV1069 with the Runco LJR-II perfectly. I plan to have it write out an LUT that I can then use to calibrate all of my captures. I'll upload this LUT alongside the raw when I post to a.b.sw.

I've had the temporal alignment done for a while now. I want to stick in 10-bit, so I'm going to have to find some way to accomplish that transformation using 10-bit-friendly software. That's what I'm working on now.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I don't know if the lens used in the final scene is that special other than being a tele or super tele with filters. Probably the filters used are harder to guess than the lens. Will you try to emulate that shot with a tele lens?

Leitch DPS-575 acquired for Xmas. Latest firmware dug up from the depths of hell: /dev/null.

The current raw will still go to Usenet, but any DVD release will be based on new captures using the DPS-575.

BTW, is the DPS-575 a major-desired improvement over the DPS-290? Or will the 290 do in low-budget situations?

The DPS-575 is a much newer machine with far more features than the DPS-290. Furthermore, the DPS-575 has a 3D comb filter (which is why I bought it) unlike the DPS-290.

With that being said, the DPS-290 is good for what it is. The folks over at LDDb sure seem to like it; hell, I even sold mine to disclord when he was still alive.

Things are happening elsewhere with THX, albeit slowly. OMM once again thanks all those who helped in the procurement of the item.

Regardless, csd79's version is excellent and it's complete with the original Kinney logo and green lettering in the opening credits.

If anything it's just another option while we're waiting for other preservations; and it's a good one at that.

I was looking for THX 1138 ...

... the laserdisc preservation?

"Have you seen them?"

"No, but they must be somewhere in Group 9."

"Operation 5271."

"This is 91021 on case 918. We are going to need assistance. This is an electronic restricted area. It would be nice to have 3 additional officers."

Yeah, I echo Spaced Ranger. Any updates regarding both laser and film print?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Film scan: Obtained. Will discuss with SilverWook and poita about what to do next.

Laserdisc preservation: In progress. My entire setup is being moved from my old computer room to our bedroom in order to use it as storage space. I'm taking the opportunity to integrate my new DPS-575 in and I suspect I'll be fully operational in the next few weeks.

My home life has been really, really busy lately. :o/

I'll upload the 2D combed one once I get everything setup.

Thank you (too!) for all your effort for this thread!

BTW, word has it that Lama Su    is taking orders for clones (just tell them Sido-Dyas sent you).

The film scan is really, really magenta, so would take a lot of work to become useable, but it is complete, and it is the only record of how the film was shown in the cinema in its first release. It should answer the questions re what was supposedly cut for the later release, as well as other questions.

Thanks for the updates. Awesome news! Will be nice to finally get an answer on exactly what scenes Warner Bros cut. It will also be very interesting to hear how much the audio mix really differ from the '78 re-release. Thanks to everyone making this possible! :)
