THX-1138 1971 Theatrical (Unspecialized Reconstruction based on 16mm)

Is there a better one?

The latter for some reason has the vomit blu ray ending.

Probably because I was going off of the ‘movie censorship’ website changelist, which really only mentions the text color. I think I adjusted the rest of the color as well, but I don’t recall perfectly well, honestly. There was definitely not a high quality looking source for the end sequence, at the time.

The edit is a relatively rough (but still decent, and still time consuming to make) attempt. So there are tons of imperfections. Thanks for taking a look, though. I think you’re the first person on OT besides myself to mention it. The main reason for it is indeed simply to have a film that lacks the barfy CGI moments, while having the bulk of it intact as decent quality video.

I agree it’s pretty good overall.

Here is how I think it can be improved though. First off as I mentioned the ending. Honestly if you don’t know a bird is supposed to fly through the screen I don’t think it’s even noticeable on the blu ray ending. And that’s just one issue with that ending. So if you take the ending on this version: THX 1138 - Japanese LD preservation and replace it you already improved the 1971 theatrical release.

Then perhaps take that new version (with ending replaced) and make the minor edits required to restore the 1978 “George Lucas” release.

Makes sense. If I had known a bit more about the ending I probably would have done that.

That said, it definitely won’t be updated by me. It’s just sort of a (somewhat) quick hack job. The scene with SEN + the kids is of course intercut with the black and white 16mm footage. There are some other issues, as I recall. The edit where LUH delivers his “sedation” chopped out some original footage, I think. So I ended up slowing down the truncated shot and interpolating some frames to match the run time. I don’t actually have the raw project files for this project anymore anyway, so I wouldn’t really be able to update anything.

Anyway, I’m certainly looking forward to whatever projects utilize newer scans. As nice as a fully restored scan would be, I’d really love to see the truly “despecialized” version built from a color corrected BD and 35mm scan.

Myself personally I don’t mind the updated version but the messed up music cue in the conference room where everyone is staring is I think perhaps one of the worst changes.

I don’t mind the updated effects too much and alternate material but don’t mess up the music cues!

I would be just as happy with a hybrid version that has these sorts of fixes and stuff. What ever works best. Although I probably won’t download it anyway but still.

I’d be just as happy with a fixed hybrid version. or a halfway house mix although I am aware it’s a preservation I’m not bothered by the changes in most respects it’s a much better special edition than star wars trilogy.

There’s a hybrid edition on myspleen and FE.

"Intention:
Using the Laserdisc 1978 Cut as a blueprint, I’ve conformed the Blu-Ray to it, shot-by-shot, down to the exact frame. Where material was missing, I’ve restored it from the Laserdisc, or the original trailer. When the CGI additions were bad, I’ve replaced them, where they were reasoanably subtle I’ve left them in (Hence the “Hybrid” title). Throughout, I’ve sought to remove or change shots that significantly differ from the Laserdisc, while trying to keep as much HD as I possibly could.

The film has also been re-graded shot-by-shot to rebalance the greys and whites, re-saturate flesh tones and general colours and remove unnatural tinting. Although in a few cases the Laserdisc shots have been tinted to match the Blu-Ray (Such as with the gold robot-factory shots). The soundtrack is the original mono mix and is unchanged."

Not sure if that’s what you were referring to when you said “fixed” or if there’s something wrong with it and/or not to your liking.

No I just have not looked to be honest with you. That sounds pretty good.

Fixing the music cues back to how they were meant to be basically. And also perhaps how it should look originally if it’s way off. I understand taking the computer displays back to their original form that makes sense it adds to the grit.

That music cue change in the conference room was well bad and unneeded. Not sure if there are more of them?

Although it would have been better to match DVD and Laserdisc not Blu-ray and Laserdisc.

I wasn’t really aware of the music change, since I haven’t watched the blu-ray straight through and didn’t have to deal with audio. But I’ll take a look at some point.

This is a comparison what is weird is that, I thought the THX music by Lalo schifrin was meant to play in the conference room.

At least the part that actually is sampled from Lalo schifrin to make the THX sound theme.

Basically this get’s a bit weirder now because it seems the music was changed or I’m totally wrong which I could be.

But I am pretty sure I have seen a version that has that sample used in the THX sound theme used in the conference room when they are all looking at him?

Again I could be wrong but looking at the comparison video it does not seem to be the case at all.

Personally I could care less about the CGI. IMO a cut that restores the laserdisc using best possible material would be the “ultimate” edition.

I just updated the OP to say that I won’t be giving out links anymore. You’ll find it at a certain site of human anatomy.

A quick scrub through and it looks terrific (In a Grindhouse way obviously). Great too see certain previously LD only shots (like the crash in the tunnel, or the dwarf rampage LOL) in 720p!

Hey guys I’ve got the U.S. laserdisc and the UK laserdisc. What should I sync them to? The UK laserdisc seems to be a far sight better than the U.S. one. Probably one of the better looking PAL discs I’ve captured.

Luke threw twice…maybe.

Hi guys!
Any chance to have the italian audio track synced with the grindhouse edition?
😃

Actually I do have it! Someone else had asked for it a while ago and it was really easy to export from the original iMovie file.

Shooting you a PM.

It’s from Poita’s Italian version scan - the one this version is built from. My grindhouse version is synced to the Laserdisc cut so the shot order isn’t the same.

Making this Italian track was very simple: I just muted the English audio track and unmuted the Italian sound. Export Audio -> Save.

I would prefer if the Italian track didn’t come out in high quality until Poita’s project is done as it would devalue any attempt to resell the print to fund more projects. Because you can be sure that it’s gonna end up being shared on pirate websites.

Hmmm, I personally don’t see the issue here. First of all, the quality isn’t that great (35mm optical, pop, hiss, gaps of silence because of missing frames). Second, it’s the same dub as the TV cut that was discovered a while ago and I would think the same dub as any other Italian home version. That cat is out of the bag. Third, the optical sound quality on all film prints are crap. That doesn’t seem to affect their value in any way.

sorry for the newb question but there’s a few threads about this movie so it’s a little hard to keep track of.

is this considered the definitive version until a proper “Despecialized” edition comes out? (poita’s, correct?)

Hi,
Anyone can help me to download this version?

Has anything further come from this project, or are there any other similar projects? At this point a 35mm fan-preservation in 1080 is, for me, the OriginalTrilogy holy grail, simply because I think Star Wars will eventually get a hi-def official release at some point, but it’s no guarantee THX 1138 will ever be restored to what it was, and I’d love to be able to put that original version of this movie on in a resolution better than Laserdisc.

Hello! No further work has been done on this particular edit - it was created simply as a placeholder until the Italian print was restored.

I personally don’t have any additional information about that 35mm restoration.

One of the top men involved has had medical and family issues to deal with recently. Work will resume eventually. I need to get a 16mm tv spot for THX out to them to get scanned.
