THE FAN EDIT CONTEST HAS A WINNER !!! REVIEWS IN OFF TOPIC FORUM — Page 16

Not trying to throw gas on the fire or anything like that, but the first contest is over. A winner was announced, the contest has ended, thats that.

I didn't know it was a typical part of a contest for the judges to post their detailed score cards. I thought that stuff is typically not disclosed. do the voters for the oscars and other movie awards tell the world how they vote? nope, in fact arent the identities of the voters not even publicly known? You just find out the winner, individual judges dont need to give the details behind their votes. If they want to share it in a contest like this i guess its fine because obviously the critisism can be used to better the fan edits in the future so its more of a review. But as was shown here, when individual score cards from judges are posted you're only gonna get hard feelings by someone.

So to repeat, the first contest has been finished. Some people brought up complaints, nothing can be done about those for the first contest so things are being discussed to address them in the second contest because all we can do is move forward and learn from our mistakes.

I think DAYV did a pretty good job with the contest when obviously there were issues that came up throughout that made things tough, and I think he realizes this (probably more so than those that werent involved directly) and is obviously working to smoothing things out for the next contest.

THANKS, DS. I'M DOING MY BEST TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF THE WRINKLES WILL BE IRONED OUT BEFORE THE SECOND CONTEST BEGINS. RICARDO AND I HAVE SPOKEN AT LENGTH ABOUT POSTING THE SCORE CARDS. AT FIRST WE HAD DECIDED THAT WE WOULD, BUT NO POST WHICH JUDGE SCORE WHAT. AT THIS POINT IT WOULD BE PRETTY OBVIOUS, SO WE WON'T BE DOING THAT NOW. DS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD WHEN HE POSTED THAT THE FIRST CONTEST IS OVER. I'LL BE POSTING MY OWN REVIEWS OF THE EDITS AS I HAVE TIME.

Like I said in another thread with Billy Mahoney started posting, I smell a new troll.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I hadnt checked the thread for a while but glad I did!

Seems like certain people are being a bit to sensitive! I entered my DVD T2 - Cyberdyne Cut to this competition for a couple of reasons.

1 - To Let other people see my work
2 - To GET CRITICISM!

Come on people, take the rough with the smooth, accept the criticism!

Also i think people are being a little bit excitable with postage costs here! Also costs of printing the discs are next to nothing, the cost of a case and a DVD probably doesnt go over 50p

All in all, I got my edits out with full printed glossy covers, On Disk DVD printed labels, high quality full size cases for less than £15 including postage

A bargain in my eyes!

I'm glad I entered my first fan edit into the contest, Although it is nowhere near the standard of some of the entrys, i'm still glad people got to see it!
I bought it, therefore i own it, right?

I was one of the judges for this time 'round. I quite purposely didn't post my individual comments to the forum, since I figured the appropriate way for entrants to get feedback was to be able to read all of the judges' (anonymous?) comments, in private. I think those people who entered should get some feedback, but I'm not sure it's appropriate for everybody and his dog to be able to read that feedback. It's the privilege of having entered: you get some private feedback about your work from people who tried their best to judge to a common standard.

As far as slagging CBB, I think DAYV can confirm my scores showed I was not influenced by anything said in this forum.

One of the things I submitted to DAYV along with my scorecards was a bunch of suggestions on how to perhaps modify the contest for next time. I think my best suggestion was to centralize the entry point: each entry should be copied for each judge, and sent to one location. At that location, all the entries should be assembled into complete entry packages, and sent out to each judge from there. This cuts the postage to the minimum (it is much cheaper to send one package with seven discs to one place, than seven packages with one disc to seven places), and it also ensures that each judge gets exactly the same thing, more or less at the same time.

I also figure there should be more detail given in each judging category (e.g. points for more sub-categories). As a judge, I wasn't too sure how I was supposed to judge audio, for example, knowing that the source was DD5.1 but that the heavily-edited result on an edit was only 2.0. Do I judge the technical merit, and say that job wasn't so hot (5.1 -> 2.0), or do I judge the artistic merit (a big change made in the dialogue or music or whatever)? Both are valid approaches, I think, and should be considered separately.

I also think a lot more information should be required of entrants about the raw materials used, the applications and techniques employed, and the specs on the final result -- including a fairly-detailed rundown of what exactly was changed in the edit. In this vein, CBB did a great job: I got a sheet for each film that explained what the point was, and approximately where they made changes. The Cyberdyne T2 edit was also cool for that, especially an extra with switchable audio (!) showing the before/after on the replacement of the G'n'R song.

As it is, I think this contest was still a success. Anything volunteer like this takes a lot of effort on everybody's part to make it work at all, let alone fairly smoothly. Big props to DAYV for doggedly keeping the thing moving forward (even when one of those damn Canadian judges was taking so long) and actually seeing it through! And also much respect to all the editors who submitted work. I figure this is about as bad as we'll ever see: things can only get better! And if this is the worst, then that's not too shabby at all.

Great post, karyudo.
I sent the CBB edits in to receive some reviews, to read opinions of people, who actually like fan edits and are willing to waste some of their time watching and hopefully enjoying what fan editors can do to movies. Of course our edits received plenty of comments on various websites, some good, some bad, but most of all just not fulfilling or detailed enough. I never participated to win, the contestant of my choice was DOOMED BY THE BOOGEYMAN, a movie, just to bad to win anything, but one that I consider a true fan edit, because we tweaked a lot here and the difference to the original is huge. deZIONized just fitted the second contest and HIGH TENSION MINUS ONE EDIT was Rikter's choice, who sent the copies to the judges. But I did not get anything at all to read, except for: the winner is and a stupid flamewar. Sorry, but I don't care about winning anouncements (although I think ADM deserves to be the winner). For me this is disappointing. So, if any of the judges would please mail me their reviews about the CBB edits and if I am allowed to may ask a question or two about the review then, this would be really nice.

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

Here are my scores, as promised. it is now time for the backlash.

btw, i will give more details, if you'd like. just ask.

----------------

OT.Com Fan Edit Grading Scale

Please grade on scale of 0-100 on each category. Final Score is the average of the categories.

Name of Film and Editor: ADM's Ep 1

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 90

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 90

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 150

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 66

Additional Comments: Edit was very clean, but at parts, one can tell where cuts were made. Possibly ADM's first edit? Definitely can tell who has done this by editing style.

----------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM ep2

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 90

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 90

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 160

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 68

Additional Comments: Edit better quality than ep 1. cuts much better. integration of deleted scenes superbly done.

--------------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM ep3

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 95

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 95

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 180

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 74

Additional Comments: in my opinion, the best star wars edit in the group. Great incorporation of deleted scenes, as well editing redundancies.

-------------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM ep4

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 85

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 90

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 140

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 63

Additional Comments: Judge's opinion only! this movie did not need an edit. i understand, however, why the editor decided this. Technically, great job. clean cuts. streamlined the film.

--------------------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM ep5

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 87

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 90

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 150

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 65.4

Additional Comments: I have to admit, watching the original, i noticed redundancies. ADM took care of these very well. also, he took care of the pseudo incest. good job. still seemed a bit blocky at parts, edit-wise.

----------------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM ep 6

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 90

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 82

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 180

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 70.4

Additional Comments: finale of the saga. edits complemented the story very well. did not notice any harsh cuts. very nice indeed.

--------------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM Hannibal

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 95

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 90

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 180

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 73

Additional Comments: Great edit. The exposition of the characters definitely make more sense. Seems to lag, but is to be expected with the integration of deleted scenes.

----------------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM Pearl Harbor

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 90

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 90

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 200

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 76

Additional Comments: One of the finest edits done. perfect. so good, my wife (a history teacher) uses it to teach her class. especially liked the bar scene. No extras, hence the low score.

----------

Name of Film and Editor: ADM Star Wars Saga

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 89.5

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 89.5

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 95

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 160

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 86.8

Additional Comments: I decided to combine this set as a saga and include the spoofs and musical journey addendums as extras. the above are the figures.

--------------

Name of Film and Editor: CBB Boogeyman

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 75

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 80

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 50

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 180

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 77

Additional Comments: video cleaner than dezionized, and audio much better. extras are nice, including fanedited trailers. edit was beautiful.

------------

Name of Film and Editor: CBB High Tension

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 80

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 85

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 60

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 190

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 83

Additional Comments: i now know what "Minus One Edit" stands for. great choice in film. edit was superb. only gripe i have is the lack of subs in this release. It's a good thing i know french.

-------------

Name of Film and Editor: CBB Matrix

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 70

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 70

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 85

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 198

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 84.6

Additional Comments: I loved this edit. It rekindled my love for the matrix movies. the video and audio were a tad subpar. it looked like it was compressed as a divx/xvid file at some point. audio was a tad low as well. but any edit that has subs and a couple kickass trailers is a ok in my book.

-------------

Name of Film and Editor: GC Batman and Robin

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 90

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 95

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 200

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 77

Additional Comments: great edit! who knew one could turn a crappy film like this and turn it to something viewable (not perfect, but who can chip perfection from this block of nonsense?). just a little over an hour long, chock full of batman goodness.

--------------

Name of Film and Editor: RB Willard

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 90

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 95

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 150

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 67

Additional Comments: Edit is decent. cut together very well, but this edit primarily consists of just adding deleted scenes back in. lags the film a lot.

-------------

Name of Film and Editor: rec1aimer starwars saga

Video (anamorphic, clean picture, etc): 75

Audio (clean sound, extra dubbings clean, etc): 60

Extras (bonus materials, commentary, etc): 0

(Multiply Score By Two) Edit (innovation, editing style, etc): 50

Divide by 5 to get the Final Score: 37

Additional Comments: I really wanted to like this edit. the idea was great and innovative. the execution, however, was not. it's a first try, however, and i'm sure his next project will improve by leaps and bounds.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT EVEN THOUGH RICARDO SCORED ADM'S EP.4-6 THEY WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE CONTEST. ADM JUST WANTED THE JUDGES TO HAVE THE COMPLETE SAGA SET. ALSO, RICARDO DID NOT INCLUDE ADM'S BONUS INTO HIS SCORES WHICH IS WHY RICARDO GAVE ADM A ZERO FOR EXTRAS.

Judging by what i've seen, looks like some people either didn't get my T2 edit in time or didn't get them at all

I was expecting this though and just thought i'd get it out there anyway

Just out of interest which of the judges recieved a copy and which didnt?

oops.. i received a copy, but it didn't make it in time.. i spoke with dayv and he said that this would be entered as part of the next contest? he'll give you the specifics.. i don't want to give away my scores for an entry that will be on for next contest.

THAT IS CORRECT. I REALLY WANTED TO ADD IT TO THE LAST CONTEST, BUT IT WAS WAY PAST THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRY. IT WILL BE SUBMITTED INTO THE NEXT CONTEST FOR SURE. I WILL SAY THIS ABOUT YOUR EDIT, I REALLY LOVED HOW YOU INCORPORATED THE T2 TEASER TRAILER INTO THE OPENING SEQUENCE. IT WAS FLAWLESS.

I've grown tired of asking for reviews and statements and receiving nothing. At least thank you ricardo for the little you posted. Have fun with your ongoing contests, I am out of this and will not visit this thread again. I do regret having participated in this and given any thought to it. What a major waste of my time. Those who are interested may discuss CBB edits with me in our thread.

I don't like pissing in people's cheerios, but it seems like you're trying to find excuses for not liking this contest. Have you even tried contacting the other judges directly? If you want their input so badly, why don't you PM them and ask for it. I hope you're not just going to assume that all the judges keep checking this thread frequently. The contest is over you know.

But with an attitude like yours, I can see why the judges might not bother with you anyway.

DOOMED BY THE BOOGYMAN REVIEW

THE PICTURE QUALITY WAS BETTER THAN THE MATRIX DEZIONIZED, AND SO WAS THE SOUND QUALITY. I COULD TELL THAT A LOT OF WORK WENT INTO THE END SEQUENCE, BUT IT LEFT YOU FEELING LIKE SOMETHING WAS MISSING. YOU KIND OF GET THAT FEELING THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE. A LOT OF MY QUESTIONS WERE ANSWERED WHEN I WATCHED THE "OFFICIAL" VERSION AFTERWARD. SOME OF THE CUTS WERE GOOD, AND SOME WERE BAD. I BELIEVE THAT IS WHERE THE ENDING SUFFERED. IT IS A NICE ESCAPE THOUGH.

WOW, I JUST SPENT ANOTHER $20.00 RESENDING THE PRIZE PACKAGES. EITHER I HAVE THE WORST LUCK WITH THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE, OR I HAVE THE WORST POST OFFICE IN THE U.S. I SENT THE PACKAGES VIA MEDIA MAIL ORIGINALLY, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THEY DIDN'T CHARGE ME THE CORRECT POSTAGE. SO, THEY SENT THE PACKAGES BACK TO ME. I REPACKAGED EVERYTHING JUST IN CASE THEY WERE TO SEE THE PREVIOUS POSTAL MARKINGS AND SCREW IT UP AGAIN. I APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAY IN GETTING THESE PRIZES OUT AS I KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR THEM. THEY SHOULD ARRIVE BY THE END OF THIS WEEK.
