TFA Blu Ray Releases

Just thought this would be fun topic to discuss considering the different Force Awakens Blu Rays you can purchase. As far as I’m concerned these are the available ones:

Regular: (20 bucks)
-Black cover with starry background and Force Awakens text.
-Blu Ray+DVD+Digital and Bonus Disc

Walmart: (20 bucks)
-BB8 Cover
-Blu Ray+DVD+Bonus Disc

Best Buy Steel book: (30 bucks)
-Kylo Ren Steelbook cover with Phasma on back
-Blu Ray+Bonus Disc

Target: (25 Bucks)
-Character Poster themed cover
-Blu Ray+DVD+Bonus Disc
-Target Exclusive Extra 20 Minutes of Bonus Features

What did you guys decide on buying? Best cover? Did the extra 20 minutes make you pay up for the Target version? 10 Bucks more for steel book packaging, is it worth it?

Bought the standard edition from Best Buy, price match to Amazon for $20. I like the slip and the original poster art. Don’t like the steelbook design or steelbooks in general. Re: target version, don’t like digi books nor am I huge on cast interviews, so wasn’t worth $5. Re: Wal-Mart, a great design for kids I bet. But alas I’m not a kid anymore

Was it released already? You guys can call yourselves lucky 😦 It will be available here in 15 days and it will cost 29 Euros (cca 33 USD). Also the “Target Exclusive Extra 20 Minutes of Bonus Features” sound interesting, does Target have an e-shop which sends stuff to Europe?

I bought the iTunes copy when it came out, figured if they release a 3D version later this year I’d pick that up. I’m all for having the IMAX scene in a more full ratio, and this is what happened with Into Darkness.

Worldwide steelbook (except USA and Canada):

  • Same as BestBuy, but without title on the front and the spine; the spine contains a selection of small character portraits. The various international titles are printed on the J-Card.

The Amazon digital release is getting bombed by a lot of people, supposively their streaming service is trash and you can’t put it on a laptop. Only Amazon verified tablet and mobile devices. And another embarrassing aspect of their digital purchase is the special features is simply bundled into one big file. From many reviews its been confirmed that they literally have you start the file, the first documentary plays and once that one finishes it cuts straight to the next documentary/featurette. When people have to write down what section of the file certain documentaries are on and fast forward specifically to that spot is very dissapointing. I think the cover art of the regular blu Ray is my favorite to be honest.

It’s just a shame no release does use the actual movie title, Episode VII or just VII being skipped (even the english wiki page is wrong about that, it really is curious and quite disrespectful of everything that happened before). I know that individual releases as steelbooks of the main saga don’t display the number, in order to easily put R1 between III and IV I guess. And still no Blu ray edition of Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

Yes it does.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

The episode number is only there in the crawl for continuity. The poster makes no mention of Episode VII so I don’t consider it part of the official title. I don’t know what actually makes it the “official” title, but that’s what makes sense to me.

The poster is for marketing purposes. It doesn’t display the actual title. What’s in the movie is the title, which is: Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens. It goes the same for every other episode since 1980 (TESB has no number on posters but its title is Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back).

I still don’t get why people don’t want it to be part VII (well, I don’t want either it to be part VII but it is…).

Is that new? I haven’t streamed anything from Amazon on my laptop since I got my Roku, but I used to do it all the time with no issues.

Anyway, I bought the standard blu ray with the black slipcover.

Yeah, Episode VII is part of the title. It was not included in the orignal trilogy until the Prequels came out. A New Hope was there, but never used. The marketed the PT as Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III to emphasize their place in the timeline and the official title of IV, V, and VI were updated at that time. Technically that has been their title from the release of V and the rerelease of IV in 1981 with the new crawl. But it was silly to refer to 4, 5, and 6, when there were no 1, 2, or 3. Now there is 7 and 8 and 9 are coming soon.

Even in 1980, Episode V was in the title? I’m aware that it’s in the crawl, of course, but I didn’t think that was “officially” part of the title until around 2004 when numbers were slapped on everything.

The movies are Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi. That’s what they’ve been called by everyone, so that’s what they will be called.

The original copyrights I believe are register under SW, TESB, and ROTJ as well, making those the official titles

I don’t Luke about this issue either way, but I ALLOL’d at “that’s what they’ve been called by everyone.”

Episode numbers were never emphasized on home video releases until around the time this was happening to the the Indy movies.

I won’t discuss it for SW, because this is its original title, under which it was first registered. But for the others, what is the copyright ? TESB and ROTJ were marketed as “SW : TESB” and “SW : ROTJ” but the episode number was originally in the crawl.

Don’t know if this is entirely reliable, but here is imdb card : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496/releaseinfo?ref_=tt_dt_dt#akas

(original title) Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

I pre ordered the Steelbook since I had the Steelbooks for the other 6 films. It’s not a perfect match, particularly the spine, but I do like having Kylo on the cover . And the title on the front is debossed as on the other Steelbooks. While I like the Captain Phasma artwork on the back, I would have preferred the poster artwork as on the other releases, though Attack of the Clones has a strange green tint I guess to reflect Yoda’s green lightsaber on the front. I guess at some point we’ll get a Snoke cover for one of the other episodes.
