TFA: A Gentle Restructure — Page 78

Could we re-purpose this shot as a solution to the whole hugging thing? Then you could just remove the Rey one, or have that two IDK.

IDK how hard it would be to isolate them. And it might be a bit weird he has his bow-caster but, I guess he might just like carrying it around? I also get there is a pay off between them hugging here vs when Han dies, but I figure when are you more likely to hug and figured when you best friend/husband dies. Also we don’t know how long they have been separated so…

No, I don’t think their subtle acting would be a match for the tone of the ending. The main reason I don’t particularly mind this oddity is because it seems like an unintentional (or maybe even subconscious) mirror of ANH famously withholding a medal from Chewie.

I also think it makes sense in the situation. Excluding the awkward shot where they just walk past each other, we see Chewie go off to follow Finn and make sure he is okay. It’s just like how Finn helped take care of him earlier in the film. Plus, I think it is in character for him to focus on taking care of someone else to distract himself from the grief. It isn’t until later when things have gotten quiet that we see Chewie by himself, absorbing everything that’s happened.

So, I don’t think it will be really be as distracting if that one shot removes Chewie or is just cropped.

It definitely wasn’t intentional, but it is ironic that JJ forgot about Chewie just like George did in the original story. Though it is a little more noticeable than a missing medal!

Fair enough, but I think however it plays out it will always be weird that they hug THE FIRST TIME THEY MEET. Like maybe if they had met previously I would get it, but force or no force that scene will always require some good old suspension of disbelief.
Suspending disbelief in a Star Wars movie, unheard of right?!?! Why would anyone ever need to do that in a Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Space Opera about “space wizards with laser swords”?

At first I thought we were still talking about Leia and Chewie and was confused.

But Rey and Leia would make sense even if the Force didn’t come into play. I imagine that even Rey knew what Leia looked like, since she knew so much about Han Solo and Leia was a much more public figure. Leia knows who Rey is, and they both know the other must be in a bad way.

The Last Jedi as a movie - Better than Empire. As an Episode - Worse than The Phantom Menace.

I am waiting on just a couple things from Sir Ridley and NeverarGreat, after which I can begin encoding and wrangling things together.

I still have not found an alternative shot to use to replace the closeup of Leia immediately prior to the Hosnian system being destroyed. Unless something presents itself this will have to stay as it was.

As far as the V1 vs V2 debate, I for one am more inclined to the V1 version since it felt like the Resistance absolutely failed and that their destruction of SKB was out of revenge. Almost like a “Remember the Alamo” type of situation.

Having SKB just immediately start targeting the Resistance base almost makes out the First Order to be too good at what they do. I like the idea of them being almost like children trying to take each others toys away. SKB destroys the Republic, and then the Resistance destroys SKB out of spite and revenge.

Just my 2 cents

Don’t worry, I don’t think anyone will ever think the First Order are good at anything after…

While waiting on one or two things, I’ve gotten a final encode for sync exported, and am modifying subtitles and chapter stops. I may or may not record a commentary track, depending on how I feel. I sat down to this afternoon, and very quickly realized I had not gotten enough sleep to be able to do that!

Here’s the final changelog for V3, aside from changes already present in V2.1:

  • As Finn mans the TIE fighter with Poe, trimmed firing upon fellow stormtroopers so soon after planning to escape. Now, he causes peripheral damage to prevent them from firing at him and takes aim at the command center. (Slightly shifted the placement of the film’s trademark Wilhelm scream in order to retain it.)

  • Removed Kylo Ren identifying Finn’s stormtrooper ID from memory.

  • Removed Rey saving Finn from the rathtars, cutting from Finn’s line, “They look like that,” to Han and Chewie arriving at the door to the Falcon.

  • Removed Finn’s comedic line about almost being killed several times by Chewie while tending to him on the Falcon (Mimicked DigModiFicaTion’s approach).

  • Removed Han shooting a stormtrooper while facing the other way.

  • Throughout the battle at Maz’s castle, applied a slight sunset color correction to harmonize the sunset lighting present before and afterward.

  • When Finn is introduced to Leia, removed mention of the Hosnian system’s destruction, though retained mention that Finn had worked on the base (thanks to FX work by NeverarGreat).

  • Removed Finn’s comedic moment of misunderstanding Han’s head nod while searching for Rey (Mimicked DigModiFicaTion’s approach).

  • Color corrected Ach-to to bring it a little closer to the corresponding scene’s lighting and weather conditions in The Last Jedi.

(I am not planning to remove Chewie walking past Leia at the end, since I kind of like this weird quirk, even if only for its probably accidental mirroring of Leia screwing over Chewie at the end of ANH.)

Oh well, looking forward to checking out the new changes!

Fair! I am of two minds about it to be sure.

If Ridley ends up having the shot finished before I do the final render, not that it’s going to be tomorrow or anything, I’d be willing to reconsider.

Sounds good to me. The head nod always bugged me haha!

Ah its a bit of a shame but it does make sense. It was a one in a million shot, though I did feel that Han new that, considering his surprise at hearing someone get hit. I always imagined he was thinking ‘Never tell me the odds’ as he looks back to where the trooper was. Still its not the end of the world if it goes.

It strikes me is breaking the rules of the universe this story is setting. That seems like something only a force users should be able to do.
See also: Han Solo as a non-badass who relies on bravado and luck to get by.

Alternately, see:
-Anyone is able to gain aptitude in the Force.
-Two of Han Solo’s closest confederates are strong Force users.
-Han has clearly gained an acceptance of, and appreciation for, the Force in the decades since ROTJ.

In this way, his extrasensory blaster shot is a microcosm of Luke’s journey in ANH, and removing it would be as egregious as altering other instances of Han shooting his blaster, if you get my drift.

Seems like a joke to make Han look cool that goes a little too far. They get his character right in the rathtar sequence, as he has to skate by in a tough situation.

The no look shot was one of three or four moments that took me out of the movie during my first viewing. (The others were: the Starkiller firing on Hosnian Prime during act 2 and Finn’s improv as Han nods his head to Rey.)

But yeah, part of the fun is coming up with rationalizations for things. 😉

Yeah, that Han nodding and Finn’s “Why you doing this? Huh?” is probably the most un-Star Wars-y moment for me.
I remember it being sort of “heh” the first time in the cinema but now it’s just sigh-inducing.

I’m going back on my previous decision, and using Sir Ridley’s removal of Chewie from the offending shot of Leia. 😃

Nice! Leia ignoring Chewie to hug Rey in acknowledging Han’s death after only knowing each other for a day or two at most was wrong on so many levels and is obviously an attempt to elevate Rey’s profile and importantance amongst the bigger original characters. It falls on its face though because it was never earned.

While I am waiting on a brief snippet of FX work for one shot, I was able to sit down and record a sleep-deprived commentary track for V3 of this project.

It’s… good (?).
