Choked? Who would have ever thought that? They were clearly in need of a good long nap.

Due to some issues people have been having, I have replaced the multiple zip file archives on the Google Drive with single zip files. Hopefully this will allow people to get them with fewer problems while continuing to avoid copyright takedowns.

So I have (with much difficulty) restrained myself from rewatching both TFA and TLJ until Hal took a crack at them. I can remember in the theater during TLJ whispering to myself “It’s ok Hal’s gonna fix it, Hal’s gonna fix it” I know that sounds like a lot of pressure, but I knew if anyone could do it it’d be you (can’t stop, won’t stop watching Ep.3 LOE). But where pray tell, might one find such pieces? Is Spleen no longer safe???

‘Digmodification’ has fixed TFA and is in the process of fixing TLJ also…

Found my source 😃

Haha, wow, crazy to imagine someone in the theater thinking that.
Both edits can be found on Reddit. If you can’t find it through searching, send me a PM. TFA is obviously all finished, and there’s a workprint of TLJ up.

OMG I thought I was the only weirdo that had that thought in the theater when I was watching The Last Jedi. Astonishing. The Force Awakens Restructured is my go to movie I watch the most now, when I want to just have fun with a Star Wars film. The edit is just… it’s so good. It’s such a fun movie when you aren’t forced to over-analyze it because the plot seems out of sync.

I saw Hal’s edits only after the Force Awakens came out but during The Last Jedi, I as well did some editing during the cringiest parts. For example, after the opening scene I found myself already thinking “Yeah sorry… that has to go. Hal has some long nights ahead of him.” Haha! But not to the point that it ruined the first time viewing.

Maybe it’s also a little testament to what we think of your skills, Hal. 😉

In for an inch, in for a mile. I’m just hoping to survive Ep9, and retire from Star Wars after that. (Ideally, Ep9 is brilliant and doesn’t cry out for anything, but I’ll hold the line until I can see it. But that’ll be the end of it. Whatever happens after that is out of my weirdly nerdy, semi-protective, angsty purview.)

Not a knock against those who have or will, but I have no interest in editing any spinoff movies. To me it’d feel like editing an EU novel.
And the eventual Episodes 10-12 trilogy? I… I think I’m okay with letting my reign of terror reside with the Skywalkers.

Author
Time

Definitely not a reign of terror, Hal!

I know this has been discussed as nauseum, but I do hope 9 is the end of it.
I’m okay with future movies about Rey, Kylo Ren, a new Jedi Order, etc., I just wish they wouldn’t use the titles of 10, 11 and 12. Let the Skywalker Saga be 1-9. A trilogy of trilogies.

Either way Hal, even if they kept going you could just say that your series only consists of 1-9, because I feel that even if 9 concludes in a way where there is room for future stories, I also feel they’ll want to end it in a way that also is a nice book end to the whole saga.

FYI, I finally found the time to finish a DTS encode of the audio for v2.1, using the same software I used for the DTS tracks included with HAL’s PT v5 and TLJ: Legendary, and sent it off to HAL.

As long as everything checks out on his end, it should be made available very soon, bringing TFA:R v2.1 in line with the current iterations of the rest of HAL’s edits insofar as audio options go.

Now I’ve just gotta find time to watch the final release of TLJ: Legendary…

Will there possibly be versions of the files with the DTS audio already muxed in? I tried to mux 5.1 .wav audio (prequel edits?) once before and kept only getting errors. I would really appreciate it if someone more tech-savvy could help out with these.

(Personally I wouldn’t mind if the file size blows through the roof…)

Muxing wav (which stands as PCM format) does work but if your audio system doesn’t support it there is no real point. I’ve muxed the new DTS file yesterday and it works perfectly. Use mkvtoolnix, it should work.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

The audio system in my living room actually does support DTS because it always says “Dolby detected” or something like that when I play movies through Plex. I don’t know about my PC audio though. But yeah, I meant that I already tried working with mkvtoolnix earlier and I just got errors while trying to apply the audio file. That’s why I wanted to ask for help with it because I feel like all the errors are caused by my fingers + brain. 😄

What does the error log say ?

I have no idea. I tried it when Hal first shared the .wav file and after things didn’t go as smoothly as intended, I just deleted mkvtoolnix and everything related.

Oh but the previous wav generated errors (it wasn’t even wav by the way, but .mov if I remember correctly). The new DTS export is fine though, I’ve got no problem muxing it.

For the record, I was never able to get the 5.1 WAV to work either, but the DTS track I made muxes just fine.

Could someone pass me the DTS track by any chance? I could try one more time, haha.

JEDIT: Oopsies… nevermind! Found the Reddit thread.

JEDIT 2: DTS now successfully muxed in but still mkvtoolnix complained something about the lossless .wav file… something about JSON and mkvmerge. I was just left wondering what are the differences between DTS and .wav since the latter is over 4 gigs?

WAV is uncompressed, DTS is compressed to ~1500kbps. Theoretically, the WAV would have better audio quality, but I honestly doubt the average person could hear a difference.

In the 1900s, the Austro-Hungarian empire had many nationalist movements seeking to achieve independence or greater power within the realm. One of those concerned Bosnia, a region in the Empire with a large Serbian population.

On June 28, 1914, the Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire traveled to Sarajevo, which is now the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, on vacation. June 28 is the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, which became part of the national myth of Serbia, the Serbian equivalent of American Independence Day.

The symbol of Bosnian oppression visiting the city of Bosnia was not taken well with the Bosnian independence movements, including six members of Young Bosnia, a revolutionary movement in Austro-Hungarian Bosnia. They set out to assassinate Franz Ferdinand.

When he finally came to Sarajevo, the boys (none of them were that old) set their plan in motion. Each plan they had, though, and their backup plans, continued to fail. One of them threw an explosive at the open-topped car, but missed, a few others had the opportunity to kill the Archduke, but choked out of remorse, but finally, Gavrilo Princip shot him.

Totally serious title idea: Bosnian Shot Last

That’s why this could also work as a Prelude-to-WWI movie’s title.

I think it is worth revisiting this project once more for a V3 in light of a few things from TLJ, including the reality that it was not free of the need for fan editing as I had hoped when I approached TFA with an extremely restrained hand.

I will be removing Finn firing directly at his peers immediately after trying to escape with Poe in the TIE fighter. While he does not fire directly at the troopers on the ground, he does fire at the empty TIEs (which causes destruction on the ground) and the command center. The idea that Finn is willing to kill his fellow troopers so quickly is not brought to as much of a head at this point. (The film’s Wilhelm scream was thereby removed, and so shifted slightly within the same scene.)

I will remove Kylo Ren naming FN-2187 from memory, leaving that bit of information to come from Captain Phasma.

Rey will not tell Finn she thought Luke Skywalker was a myth. I seem to recall JJ Abrams regretting that line’s phrasing, and that the idea was something along the lines of, “Gee whiz, Luke Skywalker is legendary!” To me, it implied she literally did not believe he existed. Given her level of familiarity with his story in TLJ, this line seems out of place to me. Now she will react to Finn’s revelation with an amazed, “Luke Skywalker?!”

I will cut away the short escapade where Rey saves Finn from the rathtar.

I’ll try again to include a line from Poe to Leia about how Finn is aware of the weapon systems of the FO due to working on their base, as NeverarGreat described he is doing for his project.

Possibly may remove Han’s “no look” shot as that seems out of character for him.

Possibly recolor the Takodana battle to appear more like sunset.

I will use NeverarGreat’s clever idea to move an establishing shot of the Falcon in hyperspace to add tension to the scene where they enter SKB at lightspeed.

If it’s possible, I would like to find a different shot to place immediately prior to the Hosnian system being destroyed, instead of cutting to Leia. If we can avoid cutting to Leia, it can be left slightly ambiguous about whether she is reacting via the Force to the planetary destruction only or if Han’s death is part of it. This one may need to stay as is, since it was hard enough to find enough shots to include!

Sir Ridley may be able to provide two shots in which Kylo Ren’s facial scar is modified to match its appearance in TLJ.

Sir Ridley may also remove Chewie from a certain shot at the end of the film, to avoid walking past Leia with uncharacteristic disinterest.

Ach To will be recolored to better match the different weather conditions in its first scene in TLJ. The best way to harmonize them is to suppose that the Sun emerged from behind the clouds during the few moments between the close of TFA and opening of TLJ.

The biggest thing I need input about is whether to undo V2’s innovation to establish that the First Order discovered the location of the Resistance base and targets them right after destroying the Hosnian system. The impetus for this was the idea that TLJ may rely on this plot structure from TFA. Though, TLJ turns out to establish on its own that the Resistance base was exposed by virtue of attacking SKB at all. I would argue that TFA(:R V2) establishing their knowledge of its location still assists TLJ, though.

The way things play out in V2 is as follows:

  • Resistance performs a recon mission about SKB in light of Finn’s provided intel
  • Resistance launches an assault on SKB after learning that they are preparing to use it to attack(… someone; we know its “The Republic,” but the Resistance is never shown to know that)
  • The First Order destroys the Republic capital
  • Snoke is informed by Hux that the location of the Resistance base has been discovered, and they target them
  • Poe and company destroy SKB in time to save the Resistance base, though aren’t quite as upbeat about it since they still allowed their government’s capital to be destroyed

The question is whether it would be preferable to revert to the way things were in V1:

  • Resistance performs a recon mission about SKB in light of Finn’s provided intel
  • Resistance launches an assault on SKB after learning that they are preparing to use it to attack(… someone; we know its “The Republic,” but the Resistance is never shown to know that)
  • The First Order destroys the Republic capital
  • Poe and company destroy SKB for unstated reasons. While these reasons may be inferred, they certainly aren’t implied very strongly.

Personally, I prefer V2’s structure for this since it preserves the original film’s motivations and dynamics after the Hosnian system is destroyed, tightening up ambiguity and is slightly more in keeping with TLJ.

I appreciate your input, since I know many of you have considered V2 as a real “replacement” version. Though I will step a little bit further outside the original bounds of the project, I still intend to keep things pretty basic. Hopefully the new changes are uncontroversial enough so as to still be suitable for those of you wanting to adopt this as a ‘gentle restructure’ replacement.
