Yeah, it’s weird to say, “There’s no way that will happen,” and then have it happen abruptly at the end, especially when that is all that was needed to resolve the macguffin.
Well, the light coming on is at least connecting Threepio’s weird line to the actual thing that happens at the end. That’s the idea anyway, an elegant, simple solution that does not involve much modification of the original film.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I’d add that if it was likely that R2 had the rest of the map, he would have already searched for it and Resistance technicians would probably have gotten involved. It kind of has to be something so unlikely that nobody thinks it worth their time to investigate, except for maybe the morose bundle of circuits himself.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

As we look to Ridley retiming additional shots that had to be slowed down using his technological alchemy, we should take a look at the Starkiller explosion scene. Any shots between, “It is time to complete his training” and the shot of the Falcon and X-wings where they formerly jumped to lightspeed are potentially slowed down very slightly. NeverarGreat carefully matched the necessary length of the music track.

Personally, I would prefer having the shots be slowed over not having them at all. Seeing the pilots’ reactions to Starkiller base firing, seeing the people in the Resistance control room, etc. is all critical to the emotion in the scene. For the last part, when the Falcon flies away, I had no issue with that whatsoever. I would rather have the slowness than not have the scenes.

Obviously, the whole plot point is pretty weak. But I think this is a good workaround.

I’m real proud of the final product, and really will be once we get it produced. 😉

It’s great work! You should be very proud!

Let us know what your family thinks of it.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried burning it to Blu-ray yet. I’ve experienced some technical hurdles trying to share it with my family, so we just watched the MKV via connecting my computer to the TV. Trying to burn it has been a nightmare… ended up buying Toast Titanium Pro just for the capability, but it ended up with all sorts of framerate issues. I’m going to convert it via Handbrake to an MP4 and burn that, but I was really hoping that I wouldn’t have to do that because I don’t want to affect the image quality.

Absolutely. I was not suggesting removing any of the shots, just that they be given the Ridley alchemy treatment as well as the SKB firing scene.

Almost impossible to hear any 3PO walking here, it needs to be… more intense! And I would suggest slightly zooming in on sad BB-8 at the 8 second mark to hide 3PO’s leg which should be walking away at that point. Alternatively the leg could be hidden by placing a new R2 image over it, I could try something like that. Even though removing a golden leg would be the opposite of alchemy, really.

Hmmm. It’s far from necessary, to my mind, but its not a bad idea. Let me see how it looks with a zoom applied.

Here’s that shot in context, zoomed and shifted left just enough to remove Threepio’s leg. Also boosted up the foley for him walking off.

It’s not great. Ridley, if you would like to do something about the leg, please feel free, but I don’t wish to burden you with what seems like such a tiny thing.

It should be quick and painless, I’ll give it a go. The foley is better now, but I think it could begin slightly earlier (over the “removed leg” shot) and might need a bit more clanky footsteps over the servo sounds.

Awesome! 😃
I’ll move the foley up a second or two, since we won’t be staring at his motionless leg.

Here are some more slowed shots too, specifically the closeup of Kylo and then the First Order control room again because it seems like that one was a couple of frames too short.

And I’ve identified the shots needing new slow motion from the crying Rey/Falcon escape. It starts with the shot when the Falcon headlights appear and ends before the shot of the Falcon flying off in a cloud of snow. But strangely this sequence is exactly the same length as in the original movie, but they’re slightly out of sync and shots start at slightly different times so I’m not sure what has been done to that part and why.

I’ve noticed what you’re talking about, but I felt like I’ve noticed this in multiple versions of the movie. Have you checked other sources to see if it has that weird lag/effect as well? Maybe I’m wrong.

I overlayed a part of my rip of the original movie (which doesn’t have the lag, that comes from slowing down shots resulting in some frames being shown twice which causes the stutter) on Restructured V2, and the sequence I mentioned above start and end on the exact same frame but within the sequence some shots seem just slightly slower in V2 and cuts happen at different times. I believe Neverar did this sequence, so maybe he can explain what’s been done. It might have something to do with taking out the shot of Rey picking up the lightsaber and slowing down shots to make this work but then putting the shot back in, I think there was a discussion about that.

After removing the pilot’s reaction shots during the Starkiller implosion, I had to move the music back so that the crescendo occurred when the base fully imploded. Before, it had happened during Poe’s triumphant ‘let’s go home’ line.

Because the music was pushed back, everything after the last Snoke scene was out of musical sync. I essentially had to re-synch the music and the visuals, and this required extending some shots and shortening a few others.

Rey looking at the Falcon headlight was slowed
The wide shot of Rey and the Falcon was slowed
The beginning of Chewie in the Falcon was removed
All shots from Rey getting up to them entering the Falcon were slowed
The end of Finn and Chewie in the Falcon was removed
The shot of the ships going to hyperspace was slowed, and the end of the shot removed

I’m sorry that this has caused so many headaches.

^ Ah, well at least now we know why though. Shouldn’t be a problem to recreate what you’ve done with that sequence.

Ridley, the 3PO shot looks great, as does the fixed slow shots from Kylo to the technicians. I wonder, though, if you could send me the 3PO leg shot without artificial black widescreen bars applied? It appears to be zoomed slightly, and to have had these bars put on. The problem is that they are slightly farther into the frame than the rest of my timeline. If you can send me the shot, zoomed though it may be, I can apply the widescreen matte on my own and have it match perfectly.
But, yeah… pretty awesome (and fast!) reverse alchemy. 😉

EDIT: The 3PO leg foley sounds much better now that I can move it up by a second or two. Now, it sounds like he’s walking off and then BB8 decides to give up and follow.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Here’s my working list for what’s needed for V2.1. Let me know if I have missed anything. (I might not recall tiny things that I’ve already done and therefore removed from this list.)

For V2.1

THE LAST JEDI must have been released and seen by us - [for the purpose of vetting the edit’s continuity]

Kylo Ren’s helmet appearing and vanishing during the second Snoke scene - [Pie in the sky]

Leia and the Resistance deleted scene recolored - [from NeverarGreat; he needs it from Ridley first]

Leia commenting on not hearing from the Republic during Resistance briefing - [Omitted, sans unforeseen breakthrough]

Retimed time-altered shots during Starkiller firing and destruction sequences - [from Ridley; the former already implemented]

Redub tech guy’s line to Hux to say something like, “Weapon fully reprimed in 30 seconds” - [Not essential, depends on if a submission up to snuff turns up]

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I noticed something small in the edit that prompts a new question. After they escape Jakku in the Falcon, where do Rey and Finn jump to in hyperspace? The OT established that coordinates for hyperspace needed to be entered in the Nav Computer. I know it’s nitpicky, but if Rey never left Jakku and since she does not know where the Resistance base is, how would she know where to go?

The Skywalker Saga:

This is the way.

Anywhere, I guess. They don’t know where the final destination is, but they can pull around the corner away from the police first. Could be a micro jump just to get away before going from there.
And she already knew how to do everything else with the Falcon.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Author
Time

Ooooo, nice. I like that.
Having them jump to hyperspace alleviates some of the unlikely coincidence factor, as Han’s “scanners” picked up on this and they moved to intercept, rather than seemingly hanging out nearby. In space.

I hope the rest of the sequel trilogy ties the Falcon’s and Rey’s presence on Jakku together, if indeed Kylo Ren has a prior connection to her. (“What girl?!”)

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Time
 (Edited)

I like that theory, but the Falcon had already passed through Irving Boys, Ducain and Unkar as Rey later states, so the last hyperspace coordinates may be nowhere near Han. I like to think that she would know where Hosnian Prime was and that Rey would try to take Finn and BB-8 there, but they slipped out of hyperspace on the way. If it is able to be done, it can give us some more word of the Republic early on, however it would be nearly impossible to implement based upon the available footage.

The Skywalker Saga:
I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX
This is the way.

Author
Time

Yeah, I don’t see that being possible. What’s there now works well and is elegantly subtle.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Author

If having them jump into hyperspace without solid coordinates and getting thrown out soon after allows for the jarring scene change of the theatrical version to be removed, I’ll side with your version every time! The scene change in the original was so abrupt I have no clue how they let that slide.

So, while you’re looking at retiming, there’s a certain shot that is in the theatrical release that is clearly in slow motion and it bugs me every time I see it.

rey

It’s at 1:57:20 in Restructured V2. The shot of Rey standing over Kylo when she beats him. Look at the falling snow and it’s clearly in slow mo. There isn’t a way to retime that, is there? It stands out to me every time and bugs the crap out of me.

Well, I know lots of people have a problem with the fact that Rey bests Kylo Ren. Perhaps she really didn’t and that was all a force vision/dream ala Luke’s slowed down scene in Empire. Of course, that isn’t the case here. Have YOU tried to fix the timing?

I mean, it could be sped up, but I think it needs to be slow to sort of focus in on Rey there for a bit.
