Thanks for the support, guys! I just finished another 6 hours on that shot, and am starting to lose focus. More later in the week.

Good night!

Congratulations, Taolar.

Thanks for responding to my question earlier. So if I was going to make an edit including rebuilding and modifying audio tracks and maybe a little compositing, which program(s) would you suggest?

For compositing, I can't recommend After Effects enough. Its used my more professionals than any other program, and there's not much you can't do with it. There's kind of a steep learning curve, but if you start out with "Creating Motion Graphics Vol. 1" by Meyer, like I did, you can't go wrong.

For editing, I used to recommend premiere, but I'm really sick of that program. Still too many quirks, and Adobe doesn't seem to be willing to fix it. When I'm done with SoJ, I'll move on to something else. Maybe a Mac or Linux program. I heard final cut is good.

As for Audio, I use a free program called Audacity. But audio is not my strong point, so I don't know...

Audacity is what I've used to record music/songs before. It's pretty good. Are you just doing a stereo mix for Son of Jor-El?

audio isn't my stongest area, and the last thing I want to do is release a substandard 5.1 mix, just to say it is 5.1. So I don't know yet.

I've been editing in 5.1, so the capability is there if there is demand.

My preference would be to partner up with an audio guy who has experience mastering to 5.1.

Hi Toalar how is the project coming on, gone a little quiet of late, was going to PM you but would seem I've lost all my PMs to you since the forum changed.
Hope its not been shelved?

I was stuck on a shot, and haven't gotten back to it recently. I've been busy editing home videos for my son's 5th birthday, but now that that's done, I'm planning on getting back to Superman this weekend. Hopefully I'll make a breakthrough and will be able to focus on the final scene for disc 1.

Thanks for the interest!

Glad you're still working on it. :)

I've been in planning for a similarly intense project centering around Michael Bay's Transformers film since around July 3, 2007. I would be working on it, but I don't yet have the requisite computer resources. So... I'm planning. And planning and planning and learning.

Best of luck with it. Although, I'd recommend doing a few smaller edits first. I wish I had gotten a few out of my system before diving into this.

The wife and son are away this weekend, so I am working on Superman...

I was working on my Superman 4 cut and I lost focus months ago. Sometimes have to step away from your work. For me it's been stepping away four months. The hardest part for me was focus.

Keep up the good work ;-)

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

I hear ya.

I didn't get as much done over the weekend as I hoped, but I did make it past a hurdle that kept me procrastinating for almost a month. Now it's just a lot of boring, frame by frame touch-up painting to finish that scene. Ugh.

I envy Adywan's productivity. If I was 1/8th as productive I'd be done by now!

We have faith Taolar, the clips and teasers you have shown us I'm sure its going to be fantastic.

Thanks Lorang. I'm sure it'll be worth my efforts in the end. But I wish so much of it wasn't so monotonous...

Hang in there -

I'm glad you got past your hurdle, T. How many seconds of footage are you having to do the frame-by-frame repainting on?
Author
Time
160 frames, or just under 7 seconds.

I'm painting out two items, and maybe a third. I'm not an artist, so these are usually the toughest parts for me to get looking right. For me it's just about putting time and focus into it and trying to keep an objective eye. When I watch at the same 7 seconds over and over again, I can really pick it apart, and sometimes want to change things that probably shouldn't be changed. I think the frequent breaks are good for me, because when I get back into a scene, I can watch it fairly objectively.

I save the project files with the date in their name, so if I have to, I can undo what I did over the weekend, if its not working. And I use the undo button a lot. This project is my first real attempt to do these kinds of FX. And I have a lot of false starts.

The upside is there will be plenty of deleted scenes in the extras. :)

Do you paint it by copy/pasting images from previous or later frames that have the same camera position, but without the unwanted objects (if it's static background/moving foreground)? I've done some of that, though just for stills. And I use MS Paint (yeah. *sigh*).

There's some of that, using After Effect's cloning tool. There's some cloning from the same frame, and some painting by hand.

Not much to report.  Looking at my project files, it seems I haven't modified them in about 3 1/2 months.  Ack!

I've been working on other short film projects.  Just completed the 48 hour film contest in San Diego, which was fun.

But I need to get back to work on this if I'm going to meet my November deadline.  I have to finish at least 3 more scenes, each composed of several fx shots, before I'd even consider releasing it.  And there are a lot of "wants" that would be cool to finish, but are not absolutely necessary.  At the rate I'm going, I may need to drop some of them if I want to get this out in the next 20 years...

It would be cool to have some more teasers of work completed just to keep us at bay!
