Instead of cutting it completely, here's how I fixed it:

WARNING: Highly compressed DIVX file: http://www.thirdwishproductions.com/soj/sojtrain.avi

I may edit it a bit more, and I definitely plan on blurring his hand when he waves. When they sped it up, his hands sort of strobed.

Bit better...but still hate that entire scene with a passion...legs are moving too slow, arms WAYYYYY too slow. And the "wahoo" tops it off. Sigh.

Thanks for sharing your thoughs. I'm surprised it doesn't work for you. There were only two parts in the original scene that I didn't like. My main problem was his full body shots where his legs were showing and were obviously not going fast enough, plus he's not leaning forward. Way fake. I remember disliking it when I first saw the film as a kid. The other was when the little girl on the train points to Clark and the mom looks over while Clark is still running alongside the train, and the mom still doesn't believe the girl. I took care of both of those problems.

As for your claim that his legs go too slow in my edit, I think your mind is playing tricks on you. If you watch it frame by frame, every time you see his feet you'll see that his steps match the ground perfectly. Most probably they filmed him actually running along the ground, with a train going very slowly, then sped the film up. As opposed to the shots I removed where he was pretending to run while being suspended from a moving vehicle.

You're right that the arms aren't moving fast enough in some clips, but it's not so bad that it ruins the scene for me. I'll see if I can improve it with motion blur though.

The "wahoo" never bother me. I think it fits for a high school kid.

I'm not sure if it's possible to completely cut the scene, even if I wanted to. You have to link the football field scene to the scene where he arrives at the farm ahead of his school mates, which leads to Kent Sr. explaining that Clark doesn't need to show off, which leads to him attempting to race Clark to the barn and having the heart attack. If you take out any of those scenes nothing fits together.

I have to say, I really like this scene, even if the running looks a bit artificial. If you can't get over the fact and enjoy it then I feel sorry for you.

Thanks! My goal is to make all edits as seemless as the original movie. I don't think anyone that didn't know better could tell that it was changed.

I totally respect tweaker's opinion, even though I don't completely agree. If it doesn't work for him, it doesn't work for him. And I like that he speaks up about it.

I respect his opinion too, I just genuinely think it's a shame that some people can't live with less than perfect effects to the extent that they would rather see them cut out of a film entirely. This is after all a forum that wants to keep the *original* star wars trilogy preserved with all it's outdated effects. Just seems a bit odd sometimes.

Eh, it's a little hard to tell what all you've done with the scene from the divx you posted, so I'll wait til the final cut before I say anything more.

I don't know why the scene rubbed me the wrong way. It's not really a big deal, and I do adore the movie. I think a lot of it has to do with not having seen the movie in quite a long time, maybe ten years or more, and coming back to that, with all the effects I've seen since then, it's a little hard to slip back into 1978 mode. And you're right about the wahoo and all of that. The kid's having fun. Superman is something of an innocent (his vocabulary, especially when he's Clark Kent, reflects that), so it's an appropriate expression for him. So I do look forward to seeing how your adjustments pan out, and I'm sure the edit will have a lot to enjoy in it.

I guess maybe my only thing is that little tiny scene where we see Clark from behind, from the middle of the back up, where we see his arms moving very slowly. If that scene were oversped a bit, it might help preserve the sensation of speed. As it is now, it kinda cuts into the pace...Clark running fast--hits the breaks, Clark pumping his arms slowly--then Clark running fast again. The shot just feels odd.

But other than that, methinks I need to shut my hole. I'm sure after watching this a couple times, the scene will feel right at home in the movie.

The running looks loads better and will look at a lot better when I watch the dvd.

So what do you you have left to do until your done with it? Any more teaser clips you wanna share with us?

The “running with the train” scene is excellent, and I love this nice little edit you've done. It works very well.

Keep up the great work!
Forever a Christopher Reeve Superman Movie Fan.

I completely agree. That shot sticks out like a rusty nail. And don't worry as I continue to polish this sucker I'm sure I'll try to hammer it back in several times.

Nah! I'm glad you spoke up. I like hearing opposing viewponts.

Thanks! I have a lot to go. Most of the editing is done, although I'm the kind of editor that keeps going back and polishing and polishing. So there will be at least a few more weeks of that. I like to work until I'm out of ideas, then step away for a week or so and come back to it and re-watch everthing.

When that process is done I'll start working on the visual effects. Not sure how long that will take. Then I'll be fixing the audio. Hopefully I'll be done by the end of September or early October, but I don't know for sure.

Since the sound is still screwy on most of the edits, I probably won't be releasing any more for a while...

I really like the re-edited version of Clark running against the train. Even the cut in the music isnt jarring. Certainly not as jarring as the horrible 2001 Re-Edit.

Thanks. That was one of the simpler edits. Just some snipping, and no-rearranging And since there was no dialog, I could do a quick and dirty audio mix. But it'll get better when I focus on the audio remix at the end. Some of the scenes are so re-arranged, it's going to take a lot of work to get it to sound good.

Sometime before the offcial Superman DVD bundle comes out. So early November at the latest. But I'm a little stuck right now. I've decided to abandon editing with Womble. I thought the better image quality that Womble would produce would make all the downsides worth it, but I've changed my mind. So I'm considering how best to go forward. Any time I change programs I'll have to re-do the work I've done so far, so before I re-start I want to make sure I'm doing things right.

So basically there's been a bit of a stall. I'm going to make time this week and this coming weekend to get things started again.

i personally like to use Sony Vegas on a lot of stuff, its a good simple program, one of those easy to learn, difficult to master sort of things. There's all kinds of stuff you can do with it if you want to study up a bit, but the basic editing is really, really easy. That would be my recommendation. e-mail me if you want some help obtaining it.

STATUS UPDATE

I've decided to do the rest of my editing in Premiere Pro. I'm reverse-telecyning the source so that I'll be editing in 24fps progressive video using Huffyuv lossless compression. I bought a new hard drive yesterday, and as soon as it's installed I'll start re-editing what I've done so far. I have a babysitter for the weekend, so I hope to get a lot done.

Hi All,

Unfortunately having to re-do all the edits that I'd already done in Womble really took a lot out of my momentum. It's been difficult to get going again, and since the new discs are coming out so soon, I've put my efforts off until then. Sorry to everyone who was looking forward to it coming out this month.

So once I get my hands on the new Superman discs, I'll be making this my only hobby, and WILL have it out in February (in time for my annual birthday re-edit film festival). Hopefully you all will think it's worth the wait!

Thanks Darknight! I just rewatched it and realized I put the wrong email address at the end! Crap!

So to anyone who emailed me at that address and didn't get a response, sorry! I'll fix that soon with a good email address and a better rendering of the superman logo...

Thanks, I'm grabbing it for review. Obviously the editing will be done with the real DVD.
