No, that's not an epic fail for Blu-Ray. That's an epic fail for the studio that released the film.

I've only seen Superman the Movie twice. The first time was a few years ago, the extended cut downmixed to stereo; and the second time was over the summer, the theatrical cut with the remix played in full 5.1 mode. I own the theatrical dvd, but I think it only has the remix, so unfortunately I've only heard that version and never the original mix. My experience of it was that it seemed to be pretty good--certainly it had strong dynamic range and powerful LFE, and made good use of the surrounds and so forth--but I couldn't tell if there was any specific issue that made it less good than it should have been.
But I completely understand what it's like to despise a remix that compromises the sound compared to the original, because that's exactly the way I feel about Star Wars--the 2004 dvd mix is abominably bad, and its huge degree of suckitude is part of why I put as much effort as I did into approximating the 70mm soundtrack, so there could be a powerful-sounding version where everything was just as it should be.
Now I'm rather curious to hear the original stereo mix and compare it. Are there specific changes in the new one that come across badly, or does the original just have a better overall balance? The film did have a 5.1 mix on 70mm, but that hasn't been heard in any form for ages.
I've only seen the Lester version of Superman 2 once--aside from a few minor flaws, I found the Donner version so superior that I only want to watch that one from now on.

I’d go along with that! Epic fail for the shameless shame, shame on you Sony Pictures I think it's under in the USA we know your name studio! Is that better! LOL
Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD/Bluray.
Before I get back into this actual topic, this does remind me of something I encountered a few days ago.
I was at Best Buy, and I happened upon the big collectors' set of the old Fleischer Superman cartoons, which was cool. I grew up watching those cartoons. I have a few VHS tapes of them myself. It looked like a pretty solid package. So I picked it up and turned it over. On the back it read, "Made for the serious collector. Not intended for children."
What? What?! "Not intended for children"?! Um, why? So the nerds shelling out $50 for this won't feel emasculated? Or has our society become that sensitive that children can't watch these cartoons? I mean, who the hell were these things made for in the first place? And the '90s Batman The Animated Series was based in tone and art style on those old cartoons. Does that mean those aren't meant for children anymore either? Ugh. Society needs a good smack in the face. Followed by a stick of dynamite down the pants, a rolling pin over the head, and all the other glorious violence we've turned our highly-evolved backs on.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.
I think that's their way of saying "handle with care" rather than saying they're too violent. I've seen a bunch of them, and believe me when I say Adventure Time is far more offensive than anything these have to offer (or even the '90s Superman cartoon). I don't think there's any physical contact aside from grabs in them...
also, sadly, Batman TAS basically wouldn't be for children anymore. Certainly not Saturday mornings... it fit the evening slot on Cartoon Network better anyway if you ask me though.

My son (who's 7.5 now) has long been a Batman TAS fan. In fact, we have video from his 2nd birthday where he got Season 2. I remember at the time that we were all excited to give him another season because we'd all been watching Season 1- the same 10 hours of it, several times a week. My mother-in-law was there and expressed sincere concern that it was not an appropriate gift for a 2 year old... but I countered that he really enjoyed it and was very excited about it.
Watching the homevideo now, it does shock me at how young my son was when he was watching that show... but he was really into it.
However, he's not into the Fleischer Superman stuff... he's not a serious collector.

I think it is because of racism against the Japanese.

I still think it has nothing to do with that... plus, that mad scientist was CLEARLY Chinese :p. I really think they mean it's a collector's item and not a casual DVD - I mean, the set certainly sounds fancy eough.

Children can handle actual storytelling and drama. I did, and I didn't turn out that bad did I? (I would hope...) Kids are not stupid! I grew up on both TAS and the Fleischer Supermans. (BTW avoid that new "intended for collectors" WB set. It really isn't intended for collector's as the openings are screwed up and changes have been made throughout.) I also think that both of these series are essentially definitive versions of their respective characters.
And I have also realized that I haven't seen Superman all the way through either.
It's now added to my watchlist with the Donner cut of II.

I recommend Taolar's "Son of Jor-El", even in workprint form it ties the two together into one movie quite well. Also, what makes you prefer the Fleischer Superman cartoons over its respective TAS?
