But that's not just a criticism of the movie - that's a criticism of the entire Superman continuity - Lois and Superman have been MARRIED in the comics before, and at the very least romantically involved, so how does that work?

What about her womb? Do you think it's strong enough to carry her child? He's an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth's yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him.

Have you seen Superman 2??
He has his powers taken away so thet he CAN be with Lois.
Seeing how SR is a sequel to 2, it makes sense that the kid is Clarke's.

I tried to download the trailer last night but ran into problems. Will try again later today. I never thought it was a good idea to go with a "vague sequel" approach. Forgetting all that came before when they made Batman Begins was a stroke of genius that benefitted that film greatly. Cutting loose from the Superman films made circa 1978-1987 would be even better for a new Superman film. Of course, so would casting an actor who isn't uber-metrosexual looking - and it pains me to say it, but it's getting harder and harder to find American actors who AREN'T uber-metrosexual in appearance. This Routh guy looks like he escaped from the set of a Power Rangers spin off.
I always thought Superman had better chemistry with Wonder Woman.

It probably would have been better to cut loose from all previous Superman outings and to go back to the comics for inspiration. The first two Superman movies were brilliant, but it seems the mixed approach to this movie will be its death-knell.
On one hand, they're using music from the original movies; voiceovers from Marlon Brando as Jor-El; and story continuity from the first two films; and on the other they're deciding to ditch Lex Luthor's wig (which is unimportant except for the fact that he wears them in the first two movies); designing Lois' clothes according to 1940s stylings (as opposed to say, 1970s/80s); telling Kate Bosworth not to watch the first two movies so that she doesn't consciously evoke Margot Kidder; and of course, casting different actors for the same roles (including a Superman who looks too young to be returning from anything, and a Lois Lane who looks too young for someone who's being returned to).
It's just going to mess with everyone's heads: same continuity + different actors + different approaches = ?
I predict that my thoughts upon leaving the cinema will be something like this: what exactly were they trying to do?

Unless its universally panned, I'll likely make a point of seeing this film in 3D IMAX once, then wait for the Donner Cut of Superman II to come out on DVD. That's the REAL Superman movie I'm waiting for.

Seeing the trailer - up until now all I have seen is stills, and they didn't do it for me, but the trailer makes it look like a good, exciting, fun movie. And the effects weren't nearly as bad as some people here have made out - the bit with the airplane looked pretty damn cool to me. Also, Routh seems to have Clark Kent down pretty good - the voice is very Christopher Reeve.

I tried to download the new trailer but my stupid laptop wouldn't do it right.
I'm still not looking forward to seeing another bumbling hapless nerd Clark Kent. I never liked that; didn't like it as a kid, don't like it now, I just sort of grudgingly tolerate it. Of course, I'm not looking forward to a Lois Lane who's too young to even be an ace reporter and a suit with a rubber cape.

Not sure if it was alternate universe continuity though I'm no comics expert.

Has anyone read Birthright? If they ever wanted to do a Superman movie from scratch, they should use Birthright. The ending is especially awesome...

I was hoping they'd do Death of Superman followed by A World Without Superman, but it looks like that won't happen. A Kingdom Come movie would rock too.
