Superman 2 The Donner Cut

Here's the full interview, which appeared in MOVIE MAGIC magazine:

Richard Donner’s Superman II

The Man of Steel’s second live-action adventure of 2006 has been nearly 30 years in the making

The Holy Grail of Superman history will be unveiled this fall with the DVD release of Richard Donner’s version of Superman II. Here’s a quick history lesson to put that statement in perspective: Back in the 1970s, Donner was shooting Superman: The Movie simultaneously with its sequel, but to meet the first film’s December 1978 release date, he focused on that effort, leaving the second incomplete. Donner’s acrimonious relationship with the film’s producers resulted in his being replaced by Richard Lester, who completed the sequel, jettisoning much of Donner’s footage and reshooting certain sequences to reflect his own directorial sensibilities.

Overseeing the film’s DVD version, and working in conjunction with Donner himself, is producer/editor Michael Thau, who also oversaw the production of the Superman : The Movie DVD.

MOVIE MAGIC: How much of Superman II had Dick Donner shot?

MICHAEL THAU: Dick shot almost exactly 75% of his Superman II script. In November of last year, we brought over six tons of Superman II film that had been sitting in a vault in England. We started laboriously going through it, pulling together scenes that were going to be the hardest to cut. When I’d get a cut on a scene, I’d show it to Dick and he’d say, "I don’t like that line; that reading’s not good" and so on. With Dick it’s always, "Make it move faster."

MOVIE MAGIC: I’d read an interview with him in which he said certain scenes were lost, such as when Lois tries to prove that Clark is Superman by firing a gun at him.

MICHAEL: Nothing was lost. That scene was actually never shot, but he did shoot it back in early 1977 as part of screentests, one for Reeve, and another, three months later, for Margot Kidder. We managed to put together a scene that has Chris from the early screentest and Margot from the later screentest.

MOVIE MAGIC: I assume you’re using Lester footage to finish the other 25% of the film?

MICHAEL: Yes, but it’s less than 25%. The plot is essentially the same, but the tone is much more like a part two of the first film. Donner’s humor is completely different from Lester’s. I’m not saying that Lester’s stuff is not funny, but it’s a different type of humor. Our intent was to make things more real and not keep undercutting the tension with comedy.

MOVIE MAGIC: The real question, of course, is whether or not you’ll restoring scenes with Marlon Brando as Jor-El, which were cut from Lester’s version over money issues between the producers and Brando.

MICHAEL: That issue is being addressed and negotiations are continuing, I will, however, say there are three scenes with Marlon Brando that absolutely anchor this film. They’re insane, wonderful Superman scenes, and that footage has not been seen by anyone for 25 years. Actually, there’s a lot that hasn’t been seen, but that’s the crown jewel of this film.

MOVIE MAGIC: It sounds like this Superman II is going to be entirely different than the first version of it.

MICHAEL: The people who have seen it have said it truly feels like part two of the first film, which was the intent all along. I think there are going to be some wonderful surprises for everyone.

I'm looking forward to this release more than any other in recent memory. I'm a huge Supes fan, and I've been waiting years for a Donner version of Superman II. I'm totally geeking out over this.

So, this will be part of the Mega Boxset, right?
Man, cannot wait for this.

I am not entirely familiar with that change of directors and how much footage was scrapped from Superman 2. Is the plot much different? Is it worth to buy it?

Brando will indeed be in the Donner cut of SUPERMAN II.

Awaiting final confirmation on this, but it's looking good as of now.

Same here. Can't wait. I want to see this more than Returns, I'd say...

In fact, this brings the entire approach of Returns into question once again. It's being set 5 years after the events of Superman II (and we can only assume this is not Donner's cut), and it's using flashbacks/voiceovers/music from the first two movies...

Man, I really need to go out and watch these films. I haven't seen any of them.

I'm looking forward to this, as I wasn't a huge fan of what Lester did with the film. The tone was off.

I'm all for it as long as the Lester cut remains available as well.

I don't get your point?

How will it matter?

Continuity. If the events in the Donner cut are decidedly different, the new film will not mesh well with it. Superman Returns is supposed to fit into the continuity after Superman II but before the abysmal Superman III.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Well yeah, especially considering they're using the unused footage of Brando in SR.
But, SR is a sequel to 2 not the Donner version, so I don't think it matters too much.

Looking forward to seeing both films though.

I'm getting all hyped up for SR. Even have the Superman theme tune as my ringtone.....err...I'll get my coat!!

Thanks for the info. I didn't know this was coming out! Sounds great! An old boss of mine worked on Superman 1 and 2 and he always said the second could have been a better movie if they had let 'Richard' finish it.

I've been following this for some time and I think this film deserves a theatrical run, even if a limited one. If WB had really been on the ball, they'd have released Superman Director's Cut & Superman II Donner cut in the months/weeks leading up to Superman Returns.

Yeah, I agree. It's almost as bad as not releasing 2001 in 2001.

I watched Superman 2 yesterday morning and come to the conclusion that it's not as good as I remember. And what was all the dissapering and re-appering shit at the end of the film about?

And also, I can see all the Lex Luthor bits that were a stand in and dubbed, never noticed it before..and he's actually not in the film that much either.

Now I am interested in what this new version will be like.

Well, at least someone's cashing in on SR. I saw a commercial last night advertising Seasons 3 and 4 of The Adventures of Superman and Season 3 of Lois and Clark, adding in at the end an allusion to Superman returning this year.

Now that it is out, any reviews?

Personally, I thought it was a hell of a lot better than the theatrical version.

I loved it. I liked the Lester cut as well, but i was amazed at how much more mature, sophisticated, gripping and darker Donner's version was--its much more of a character piece. Of course due to the still-incomplete nature of the edit there are still a few plot holes that can never be filled (most of it revolving around the reversing-time original ending) but its still much more preferrable to Lester's version, which now comes off as a cheesy TV-movie adaptation of Donner's.

couldn't have said it any better myself, zom. lester's version pales in comparison. not bad for cutting 25 years later.

But it didn't make any sense!

He spun the world back -again- to the point of the baddies being back in the Phantom thing. So basically all of 2 never happened!

It just didn't have a good ending. Parts were better than the original, granted, but I felt for the most that this felt like a TV edit and not Lesters!

HA! Then how would you explain Superman's son in the new third Superman movie? Oh... you don't explain it? Yeah, that sounds about right. Never mind.
