Suicide Squad Extended Edition fan edit - Sorry link no longer available (Released)

I grew up reading John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad, so when the movie was announced, I was pretty jazzed about it. However when it was released, even though I liked it, I thought that it could have been way better. So I purchased the Extended Edition Blu ray and decided to make my first fan edit. Basically I re-cut the first 1 hour and 30 minutes of the film. I deleted duplicate scenes and moved the beginning Deadshot and Harley scenes from their original opening position and placed them into the conversation that Waller has in the restaurant. I attempted to alter the relationship between Flag and Deadshot to make it more adversarial in nature, so I removed a lot of their buddy-buddy banter until later in the movie. Also, Katana’s entrance has been re-cut as well as the scene of the Squad drinking/talking in the bar. It is currently on the spleen if interested.

Thanks,

rickster

I made a 2.0 version in 720p. I was trying to get a more manageable file size, but it’s not much smaller, 17.3GB. Either way, I would be interested in your feedback. I looked at the project a bit like an attempt at polishing a turd; I liked the movie as it originally was presented, but I felt that it fell victim to the curse that is Warner Brothers. They seem to have a difficult time letting creators create.

On the spleen…

I don’t see a BD25 at all, just MKV files. Unless if it’s V1 only.
Nah, none. Expected M2TS or an ISO. Disappointed. Making a fan edit in HD and not making a BD25 download? That’s nearly pants-on-head [word redacted by moderator].

i’ve had some ideas for a little while now about how i would re-edit suicide squad. it makes me angry that they basically released an unfinished movie. i think the only way to fix it is to take a foreign dub of the movie, say french, and then make new english subs that would have to be about half re-written lines. combine that with a whole bunch of editing and you’d be about 90% of the way to a good movie, the last 10% would require actual reshoots. but, i don’t know the first thing about video editing.

The things you mention highlight the limitations of fan editing…and don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of really talented fan editors out there, but ultimately, editors are limited to the material that is available via the Blu ray/DVD releases and deleted scenes…so they can only do so much. There are edits out there where other supplemental material was utilized, like Watchmen:Midnight, but again, they are limited by what’s available.

As far as this movie goes, it had so much potential given the classic source material, but sadly, the powers that be chose instead to release a sub par film and bombard its viewers with a ‘cool’ soundtrack in an attempt to camouflage said films’ shortcomings. So it turned out to be just another ‘could have been a good movie’ in the long line of WB flops.

except if you put new subs over a foreign language dub i think you can haphazardly make almost a completely new movie. it would just take some work. and it will unfortunately become the essence of telling rather than showing, but i think i could make it work, with a few seconds of joker on the boat footage from that skrillex music video and something to use as boomerang’s dream sequence at the end. most of the problems with the movie are deranged editing and plot holes

and what you would end up with would be oddly closer to a comic book, with reading over visuals

Actually, our concept sounds a lot like Watchmen:Midnight, which used Rorschach’s monologue throughout the edit with awesome effect. In my effort, I did try to remove some dialog, but I could only do so much…I really didn’t know what I was doing, just experimenting really.

I think your idea would make for a good edit, you should give it a shot.
