Come on. The Phantom Menace wasn't that bad.

Why can't we reserve our movie bashing to truly awful movies like Kill Bill, Rocky and Bullwinkle, or Eurotrip?

hey i never said anything i agree with you. TPM was nto a peice of anything.

If TPM hadn't had the Star Wars attached to it, it wouldn't have made it to the cinema. That's my opinion. If you take out the references to the StarWars films there's nothing left. I don't expect everyone to agree with me but I ain't gonna say it's a good film just because GL made it either.

I don't know... I belive it sucked mostly because it was SW. If it wasn't related to SW in any way, I wouldn't expect much of it, and wouldn't mind Jar Jar (altough I dont hate him anymore), midchlorians, Jake Lloyd...

those were my only real complaints...
Jar Jar, midchlorians and Jake Lloyd just had no place within a star wars movie....

other reasons i didnt like it....
announcers for the Pod Race were unbelievably foolish and were obvoiusly directed towards making kids laugh...
Anakin saving the day by accident.... i thought he was a great pilot.?? not just lucky?

Midichlorians? What is wrong with those things? They are what let people control the Force to begin with, right?

People complain that by using midichlorians, it ruins the mysticism of how people are determined to have the Force. Now, it's knocked down to nothing more than a blood test to determine if you have the Force or not instead of Jedi having "a feeling" about a certain person. Honestly, I agree with the argument. It would be like saying Jesus was the Christ not because of faith but because he has the right number of chromosomal alleles to be the Christ. Takes the faith factor right out of the equation.

It makes sense really. It explains why some people are more powerful with the force then others and why droids can't use the force.

I agree that it does a nice job of explaining it, but I would've rather not had it explained. I enjoyed the whole mysticism of it. I thought that made it so much cooler when no one knew how to explain it really.

I suppose the midichlorian thing is just a matter personal taste. I prefer having... at least semi-plausible explanations for things when it comes to Sci-Fi.

I think the midichlorians were a great idea. I prefer everything to be explained. The Phantom Menace had flaws but it had some great action, effects, and a good introduction to the story.

Oh well. At least someone enjoyed it.

I think most of the people who hated it were OT fans expecting a second coming of Star Wars. And critics who hate everything the general public likes and like what they hate.

This is what Yoda says about the force in The Empire Strikes Back.

"Life creates it. Makes it grow. It's energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the force around you. Here, between you, me, the tree, the rock. Everywhere!"

In the original trilogy, you need a strong mind to control the force. But in the prequels, you need a high midichlorian count to do so? Am I the only one here that has noticed a change as far as explanations? George Lucas' explanations of the force in The Empire Strikes Back and The Phantom Menace seem to contradict each other.
"May the force be with you!"

Not true at all. In The Phantom Menace it says you need a strong mind to hear the midichlorians speaking to you.

I think anything with a strong mind can control the Force to a degree, but the more midichlorians you have the more "force-sensetive" you are.

Even in the OT the force had something to do with genetics. "The Force is strong in my family. My Father has it. I have it. My...sister has it."

And remember Han and Lando and Mon Mothma couldn't use the Force.

Even so, I'm with Bossk on this one. It's not a terrible explanation; in fact, it's a really good explanation. But the mystery of it was all part of the fun. Though, maybe it's good to point out that in TPM, the Jedi Council doesn't use Anakin's midichlorian count to sway their decision to train Anakin or not. As long as we didn't have to hear Yoda say, 'Train him we shall. Many midichlorians has he. Trained he must be.' I have no problem with it.
