OK. I tried some different methods of stereo to 5.1 upmixen and read a lot of stuff about it on doom9.org but I just can't get good results. Is there anyone who is really good with this stuff willing to explain this to me or willing to upmix my stereo wave files for me please please please?

It kinda depends on what your stereo files are. Are they strictly a two-channel recording, or are they a Pro-logic soundtrack?

Well, the LD says http://img271.imageshack.us/img271/4350/surround419gu.gif but I captured the audio as stereo wave files (thru my canopus advc55).

Okay, that's prologic downmixed to stereo. That's good.

Here's the thread where I got my information. Look it over and let me know if you have any questions.

MBJ's link is a good one. It took me some time to get the hang of it, but I recently did my first upmix and was quite pleased with the results. It doesn't give you a subwoofer channel, but it at least does separate to surround rather nicely.

"It doesn't give you a subwoofer channel,"

But Vegas allows you to set the frequency cutoff, and channels the low-frequencies from the 5 speakers to the sub in the rendered AC3.

I have a few questions about the procedure:
1) Where can I find the "WAV dest filter"? It's not in my list.
2) In the procedure it says: connect audio decoder to intervideo audio processor, but there is no audio decoder.
3) How do I give the "file writer filter" an output name?

Procedure:
- In GraphEdit go to File > Render Media File... > Open your 2-channel audio file
- Delete the Default DirectSound Device filter
- Go to Graph > Insert Filters... > DirectShow Filters > InterVideo Audio Processor Fx > Insert Filter
- Also insert the WAV Dest filter and File writer filter with an output filename e.g. output.wav
- Connect the audio decoder to InterVideo Audio Processor Fx, then WAV Dest, then the File writer filter
- Right click the InterVideo Audio Processor Fx filter > Filter Properties... > 6 SPEAKER
- Go to InterVideo Container DMO > InterVideo EXP DMO > Append <---
- Click Play and then immediately click Stop to 'initialise' the filter
- Go back to Filter Properties > InterVideo EXP DMO tab > ProLogic2
- Click Play and wait until the button reactivates
- The output file has an incorrect 2-channel WaveFormatEx header!
- Use a hex editor to change:
- nChannels at 16 from 02 to 06
- nAvgBytesPerSec at 1C from 00 EE 02 to 00 CA 08 if your audio is 48 KHz, or from 10 B1 02 to 30 13 08 if it is 44.1 KHz
- nBlockAlign at 20 from 04 to 0C
- You now have a Dolby Pro Logic II upmixed 6-channel WAV file! (empty .1 channel)

I tried Plogue Bidule + V.I stereo to 5.1 vst plugin and I think I can get it to work. Just trying some different settings now.
