"Star Wars stereotypes: Not a force for good" — Page 3

Jedi seems to be the beginning of the design led approach most prominently displayed in the PT era.

The maquette for Sy and Lucas' prompting that it be a she with Jagger lips probably created Lapti Nek and Jedi Rocks. That whole scene in From Star Wars to Jedi where his decides Snooty would be a vocalist rather than just a dancer (around 250ish) reminded me of similar meetings leading to the creation of Steve Greivous.

The real creation of the film probably happened in the editing which I would imagine would give even more control and distance him from even more pre-release critique.

An alien with slit eyes might only become offensive when you add a fake oriental accent. The sculptor might not have a clue what the creature would final end up sounding like (I prefer surfer dude Fed myself.. he is like, totally awesome).

Now look, Star Trek fans have no idea what they want.

Oh, no? I have a pretty good idea what I want from Star Trek: strong characters, exploration of alien worlds, philosophical discussions, and no conceited Roddenberry-styled utopianism or stupid technobabble.

The TOS films, TOS itself, and -- to a somewhat lesser extent -- DS9 did the job for me in most regards, TNG ... not so much, the TNG films not at all, and I've never seen Voyager or Enterprise as I became sick and tired of Berman & Braga's take on Trek while watching TNG and have absolutely no wish to ever see them.

Anyway, I can say with certainty that what I want from Trek doesn't include Kirk being promoted from cadet to captain, Kirk acting like a douchebag, swollen hands, black holes made out of red paint, the Enterprise nacelles looking like giant hair dryers, Khan becoming a white Brit, Sylar fucking Uhura, and all the other shit I've read about Abramstrek.

 You read about?

So wait, let me get this straight: You love TOS and the the TOS movies; you kinda sorta maybe like a few DS9 episodes a bit; you don't like TNG much (likely based on watching the earlier seasons); you can't be bothered with Voyager or Enterprise; and you're making blanket judgements of the reboot movies based solely on internet fanboy rants that you've read regarding them.

Well, that certainly makes it easy to make a movie you'd enjoy in a franchise that contains hundreds of hours of onscreen content when when you only like maybe 15% of it.

 Thanks for sharing your opinion.

The discussion is pertinent to the topic and there are other threads if you don't have anything to contribute or don't find reading what is being contributed to your interest.

Some of us come into this thread expecting a discussion on Star Wars stereotypes and instead find a discussion about Kahn.

And some of us are actually furthering conversation in general instead of filling the thread with complaints. This is what real conversation does. It weaves in and out of a topic as other similarly relevant topics are brought to mind and subsequently mentioned.

I think TV's Frink just hates Trek.

Oh no you don't, I'm not going to start talking about what Trek I like and what Trek I don't in the wrong thread.

I would be interested to know if there were any indications in the script or elsewhere as to what the Neimoidians should sound like. Ditto for Watto.

Based on the Episode III bts video about the creation of General Grievous, it seems like George doesn't give the conceptual designers very much to go on.

The original design for the Neimodians was the design that became the Geonosians (the droids were meant to resemble their creators).

I think they only became Japs flying in Eurosigns bickering about trade taxation when Lucas realised the CGI was quite up to speed yet.

If the looked the way they were originally designed perhaps the unfortunate parallels wouldn't have been made regardless of what they sounded like.

Interesting that nobody has found something to be offended by with the Geonosians, at least nothing I've heard about yet.

And "japs" is considered an offensive term in the U.S., just so you know.

Why though did George decide to dub the PT aliens instead of subtitle them?

It makes Chewie, Greedo and Jabba look stupid since everyone can speak English but them (nevermind the Ewoks, since they've never encountered offworlders). Ooh... and it makes me wonder which they're going to do for the sequels.

In Chewie's case he might not be able to. Didn't Heir To The Empire have a Wookiee with a speech impediment that allowed him to speak basic?

^Yes, there was. And her dialogue was conveyed between brackets, too, for some distractingly annoying reason.

Yes. I've read that Wookiees are unable to speak Basic.

Hutts on the other hand, even though they are able to, they choose to speak huttese just out of spite or pride or whatever.

It's offensive to UK people of Japanese origin too, which is why I used the term. The stereotype in the PT was offensive, contextually the use of the term makes sense to describe it.

If I were to run up to the average German and call them a Kraut or a Nazi I would be deserving of a punch up the nose.

If I'm talking about the representation of German people in caricature and I was illustrating my distain for a particular example using those terms makes sense.

The term spaz is very offensive in the UK but we throw shows like Buffy a bit of slack because it doesn't have the same history in the USA than in the UK. If someone on here was to refer to Jar-Jar in those terms I wouldn't assume they were making some sort of insult to cerebral palsy sufferers.

I think all racial slurs and ''slurs'' should be defined only by working class people, upper middle class and intectual people overcomplicate everything.

This strikes me as a bad reason to use an offensive term, but whatever.

I agree, it just sounds more like an excuse.

I'd call almost everyone currently in this thread a bunch of whiny bitches, but that'd be insulting to female pooches everywhere.

What brought this on? A thinly veiled mass personal attack is just as bad as a specific one. Knock it off.

This thread is starting to feel like it's going downhill, and the brakes aren't working. Maybe a move to off topic is in order.

The Neimoidian voices remind me of the dubs Titra/Titan Productions did for Asian genre films.

Or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeuL1C3peRc

So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.
