Star Wars on Super8 (Released)

A quick look at the trench sequence from the last reel of the Derann Super 8mm print.

The aspect ratio is off, this is just a test to see if the reel needs extra cleaning.

About 2 mins worth, with no sound.

Damn! It looks really good. The colors, the grain, the details... I'm amazed! Thank for sharing it with us, poita.

Is that a French Derann print? Are you planning to capture the whole film?

Damn that looks pretty good man.

It is the UK Derann release, it was taken from the international negative master, so there are no greedo subtitles, but it has the English Crawl and end credits.

Alright then, good to know! From what I've seen, this beauty deserves a preservation.

I'm still wondering if the other reels are as good looking. Are they?

Wow, that was better than I expected. Looked pretty clean too (if that was how good the print was). Even if there was no 35mm release, I'd even settle for a Blu-ray release of that.

Very nice results poita! Love that texture/grain, gorgeous.

The other reels are much the same, there is a green emulsion line through about 1/3rd of one of the reels, but that can be repaired without too much effort.

Scanning it is a bloody big task though, I needed to purchase an extra SSD to keep up with the scanner, it was dropping the occasional frame, which on film is a nightmare as if you miss the frame you have to get the film back into position, capture that frame, align and insert it etc.

The capture is about 18GB per minute in its raw form, so it is quite unwieldy.

Just transferring the files off the SSD to the HDDs each time the SSD fills up can take hours. I've ordered another couple of HDDs to stripe them. A RAID0 setup should stop me having to wait so long between each scanning session for the SSD to be cleared.

That footage is straight out of the scanner, no colour correction or anything yet. I'd love it if someone had a go at correcting it.

So I've ordered another $800 of HDDs all up (1 faster SSD, 3x2TB HDDs to RAID0) to get this thing transferred, they should arrive next week and I can get on with it.

Hopefully it will be worth it in the end and someone will polish it up.

It means I will be better setup for future film scanning projects too.

Yeah, that is how the print looks. There has been no digital cleanup, just a scan and resize and compression to make it uploadable.

I did physically clean the film over a light-table, that takes a while :) but gets you a result that is more true to the print rather than relying on digital tools.

Unfortunately some of the 'hairs' and dust are on the negative, so are 'baked in' to this print and digital removal of them would be the only way.

I'll be leaving it as is though, that way people can clean or not clean as their heart desires.

You of all people didn't notice an "old friend" hiding in the bottom right of the frame? ;)

This looks incredibly good! Far and away better than puggo grande from a lower-res source... Is there any chance you'll be doing a 16mm capture as well?

Looks really really great!  I am wondering about the thin strips at the top and bottom that you can sometimes see stuff in.  It would probably be best to crop that in the final version.  Since it is moving slightly, I guess the bottom one is ok, but the top one could be cropped a bit more.

Hey poita - what scanner are you using?

This looks phenomenal! I can't believe how clean it looks - so I'd say, that's easily enough practical clean-up on your part.

Do you already have plans how you're going to release this? I'd vote for an full-frame 1080p video (basically at the wrong AR but without the black bars), so that there's enough area to work with. This could be the release for the "tinkerers", which can be used for color-correction and clean-up, and finally resized to the correct aspect ratio. Judging from the softness, the final output could be a nice 720p video.

Also I have downloaded the clip and I absolutely LOVE it. It would be great to see a 1080p mkv of it

He-he  I did notice him, but in this case it wasn't anywhere near a problem I think. Is it your super 8 print, Silver? Maybe you are followed by him.

Not my print. But I'm afraid Coily will be there if I go looking now. ;)

It's a little less colorful than I was expecting, but looks pretty awesome.

I think it would be possible to make things 'pop' a bit more with some adjustments - I had tried a quick and nasty boost https://vimeo.com/72009834 but I would be worried of doing too much in case of ruining the nice texture the original has

Yuck compared to the original. So much detail lost.
