Star Wars moving forward without Ms. Fisher — Page 9

I’ll use ATM’s two examples and add what I think makes the two scenarios somewhat different.

Cushing;
"…been dead for 20 years" - and in-universe has been dead for 30 years, in a film released 40 years ago. The film currently in the theaters tells a story that ends moments before the 1977 film starts.

Fisher;
"…died unexpectedly young" - and in-universe is part of the current story, which she just finished filming for a release this year. The film next year is also part of the current timeline.

Cushing; They either had to recreate Tarkin, CGI or otherwise, or have a strange a absense in the current film & story.

Fisher; They can do a Col. Blake and have the story work very well. It would also help the fans, who at this point only a month since, are still making peace with her unexpected passing. This is how I hope they handle it.

Tarkin was totally unnecessary fanservice in the film.

You don’t think it would have been weird for the commander of the Death Star in SW not to be present in this movie, which ends right before SW?

There should have been no Tarkin. Or Vader. Or X-wings. Or Death Star. Or stars. Or wars. They shouldn’t have made this movie. I shouldn’t have watched it. I hated it. I keep posting about it. Everything sucks.

The story was about stealing the Death Star plans. It didn’t have to have Tarkin or the Death Star in it.

The only thing that had to be in the plot was the rebels stealing the technical readouts of the battle station. Now, if you are going to write a story about that, how would you envision the rebels doing such a thing? Where would they even find the technical blueprints for the battle station? What kind of security would they have to bypass? How would they even discover where this place is? I think these are the kinds of things one needs to consider when they sit down and write a story.

It would be very plausible that the plans would be located at a research and development facility. Most probably, that would be the research and development facility where they actually did research and developed the design for the Death Star. Then, the rebels would have to find out about this place from their spies. And they would have to infiltrate it or attack the base and steal the plans and get out of dodge. That would be the plot of the story.

None of that requires the actual Death Star being in the movie. It doesn’t require 10 different star systems and a research base where Galen dies and another place where they store the records. It doesn’t require a THX style data gripfinder just because well, that would be cool to put it in the movie because we saw it in some other movie before.

This is all fanservice schmuck. The kind of stuff people put in movies so they can wink at each other and feel smart and better about themselves, and the people watching the movie can think about how they saw the same thing in other movies and feel smart and better about themselves.

And it sucks.

If the movie’s only fanservice schmuck then, as a fan, I feel properly serviced. 😛

I think Alderaan might be eligible for AARP membership.

And thank god we have yet another thread where he’s bitching about Rogue One or TFA.

If there is any chance they will try and do more CGI Carrie after she’s passed, particularly since they still haven’t given us the OOT in 5 years, then you’re dang right I will talk **** about Disney and their terrible films.

Except your post has nothing to do with that.

Yes, my posts were very much on topic, since we were talking about another dead CGI character not even being necessary in Rogue One, but Disney conjured him up anyway.

Yeah, there’s a lot about Carrie Fisher in that post.

I cannot understand people that complain about “fan service”. How fucking insane that the producers of the Star Wars movies would include stuff for the fans of Star Wars.

And to include the Death Star in a movie whose plot revolves around the stealing of the Death Star plans? Why would they do that?

I can only wonder what these threads would have looked like if they were around after the release of ROTJ. “So much stuff was included just for fans of the other two movies. Han Solo coming back again and another Death Star!”

Fuck all, there is a thing like plot. Not everything is just “fan service”, and if your not a fan, just don’t watch the movies.

Nothing at all in this post about Leia (RIP Carrie Fisher) but that seems par for this thread currently.

Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

Food for thought:

“One night over dinner, I asked George what he would have done if I’d been killed in the car accident […] Would somebody else have finished my part? He said, ‘No.’ There’d be a script change that would have found a long-lost brother or sister, something genetic, so that the Force would be with them.”

I know there was a contingency plan in case the big three didn’t want to come back for TFA- I wonder if they will use that.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I think the contingency plan for TFA was basically if one of them didn’t come back none of them would. It’s why everyone was so anxious about whether Harrison Ford would be back, given his history with the character.

I’m sure a collective sigh was heard from Lucasfilm the day Ford agreed to return.

Still, that plan is kind of out the window now …

A version of TFA without the three of them is a strange thing to think about.

I think I read who become Poe would have had the Millennium Falcon if Harrison wouldn’t come back and the Luke McGuffin would have been for another Jedi if Mark said no. I do remember Carrie being the first to agree to return. Mark and Harrison took more time to convince.

It just hit me that seeing the first teaser/trailer for The Last Jedi will be super emotional. Seeing Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia one last time. Bittersweet.

It will be an emotional film to watch, I agree. Going to be hard to say goodbye to the princess.
