Hello again

Unfortunately, just as I thaught:

Hi Allan,

Again, unfortunately not. We do not even have the films in a format that we at this time could duplicate a copy for you. I will inform you if we at anytime
carry the Star Wars films.

Regards,
Mike

As stated earlier, Episode I is availible from some US libraries, including:

A quick update to my earlier post.

As well as the MMM Commentaries for all 6 films and the Holiday Special, there is also a set of commentaries for all 3 Prequel Trilogy films from DVD pod BLAST.

I am not sure how good any of these are but they could be worth a listen to.

4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 2

Hi rus

Thanks for the update, I'll have a listen to the commentaries at some point.

Just to keep you guys updated too, I am still on the look out for all three prequels.
Ep 2 and 3 have never been released on home video, however, as I've mensioned earlier, episode 1 is availible from some US libraries. Hopefully I'll be
able to get a hold of that one at some point.
Again, any help will be greatly apprishiated!

Hello again

Another update to this thred, which has been dead for a while.

Finally some exciting news has happend!! The UK broadcaster ITV1 has begun airing all 6 films in cronological order, and yes, they are with audio description! So far I've got the sound-tracks for episode 4-6, and as soon as eps 1-3 have been aired, I'll have the soundtracks with descriptions for those also.

If someone wants to add these tracks into some kind of project, let me know. i'd love to see the tracks synched to the video, so that I can enjoy the films along with sighted friends, so if anyone would like to help out with this, it'd be very much apprishiated also!

Note, as this is aired in the UK, the versions are of course palled.

Anything noteworthy, extroidinary or just plain odd in the descriptive audio? How loud is the voice in comparision to the general audio. Male or female voice. Did this version sound the same as the other versions you've gotten?
(could you up them to a free service? a sample piece?)

Haven't heard from you in a while and this is good news!

You know I'm after those tracks and coincidentally I just bought the PAL GOUT (yeah, I know it's crappy but it was super cheap). If there isn't a skilled individual interested in taking on the job I could try my hand at synching them to the movies. Are Episodes 4-6; the OT, 1997 SE or DVD versions of the films?

In any case, even if someone does want to try synching them I'd appreciate any Megaupload/Rapidshare/YSI/etc links you could provide for just the audio. I'm glad you've finally got copies of the audio at least.

To contact me outside the forum, for trades and such my email address is my OT.com username @gmail.com

hello none and clockwork

In comparacen to the american version of A new hope with description, the british one is really not as good, but you are given some informations that the american describer fail to mention.
However, the versions of empire and jedi are much better then the described american versions i have, mostly because that the fokes at ITFC do a tun of recearch before they produce a descriptive track, which mean that we get the correct names for crichures and places.

The description it self is performed by a mail voice. He is quite ok, although i could have wished for a little more dramatisation in the many action scenes. The mixing is not done very well, however, but probably this is not the companys fault. I think it is ITV that has chosen a rather hard dive in DB when the describer comes on.

but I really think you should judge for your self, as here are the links for all thre episodes. Availible on sendspace for a limmited time only. it would be great if they could be synched to video.

i am sorry that i DO NOT HAVE THEM IN UNCOMPRESSED FORMAT, BUt these oggs were the only version I got.

Oh, and these are the 97 special edditions.

These are neeto. Almost as if they took the Audio Book Records and applied that logic to the whole movie. I've only heard audio descriptions in US tv shows, and there the additional voice is usually much lower, almost faint, so that the original audio is not modified. Here they hard clamp down on the movie audio whenever the descriptions come in.

Weird line at ANH ~10:20 "and his legs, slightly appart, as if he'd soiled himself"
ESB just before the credits, listen to the shape of the ships...

Sorry for resurrection, but I'm still interested in finding these too (and the links mallanikkelsen posted are dead, of course).

The libraries where I'm at now (IA) were supposedly to have some copies, but they all seem to have disappeared.

Supposedly only VCR's that can "read the third audio track" can hear them, but I don't remember needing any special equipment to hear them. About six years ago I remember hearing part of the Star Wars one, and it had "DVS" sticker on the front, iirc. Otherwise it looked identical to the 1995 pan 'n' scan VHS tape. It had a female (iirc) narration over the top of the movie's normal audio.

I wish I could get my hands on that now... :(

I guess they released Episode I as well, but I've never located it.

My local libraries were supposed to have two copies ("Star Wars: A New Hope, audio described ed."). I checked out one and it was mislabelled (just plain ol' THX Faces pan 'n' scan).

The other supposed copy just came in via ILL, so hopefully I will be able to pick it up in the next few days and see if it's the real deal. I'll let you all know what I find out, if anything.

Well, SADLY I have failed. I tried all the libraries I could find in Eastern, IA, and none of them have it.

Sure, their CATALOGS SAY they have the "audio described edition" for "the visually impaired" however when I pick up the actual ITEM it is clearly just the 1992 THX "FACES" Vhs with closed captionining. I pop it into my VCR and it's identical in every way to the regular edition and there's no identifying stickers or anything anywhere indicating it is the "audio described edition."

I don't think I need any "special equipment" to check this out. For the record I have one of those "TV/VCR combos" that has only a "Mono" speaker output,  however I distinctively remember some years back popping in a Sister Act II VHS in there and realized I had rented the audio described edition by mistake (it had a big prominent DS or DA log on the front, forget which, but it was a blue purple label that either indicated "descriptive services" or "descriptive audio").

Anyway, I still am intrigued by this and really really want to hear the full length english audio track that would normally be put out there.

Has ANYONE recorded it or uploaded it? Please send me a Private message (PM)!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) & Collection Information

What Is Descriptive Video?
A descriptive video is a regular home video cassette or disc that has
been formatted to include an additional audio track. On this additional audio track, a narrator describes the visual elements of the program - the action, characters, locations, costumes and sets - without interfering with the program's dialogue or sound effects. No special feature or device is needed to hear this audio description. All you need is a standard VHS video cassette recorder (VCR) or DVD player and a television.

Many of the videos in the Nebraska Descriptive Video Collection are
great blockbuster movies, popular Public Broadcasting Service television programs, and select Turner Classic Movies purchased from the Descriptive Video Service® (DVS®), a non-profit organization begun in 1990 by the WGBH Educational Foundation, a producer of public television programs. All DVS® home videos are also closed-captioned for people who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Other videos in the Nebraska Descriptive Video Collection are network
and cable television programs produced with audio description and donated by Narrative Television Network (NTN) a television network founded in 1988 with the mission to make television "programs accessible to visually impaired people."

Major funding for Descriptive Video Service® and Narrative Television
Network is provided by the United States Department of Education. The Nebraska Descriptive Video Collection also includes videos purchased from AudioVision Canada and TheatreVision.

Cool.... once they get on RS, MU or torr3ntz, I'll happily grab 'em. What will they be named? (since there are the radio dramas and audio books to confuse matters)

They just sent me an email back and said I actually COULD get the tape(s) via Interlibrary loan, I'd just need to register with my local library for the blind (which might not work if I'm not actually blind myself). There's no charge for ILL of course.

Did you upload them? In any case, whoever is responsible deserves a huge "thank you"!

Ah yes, and I see they are UK, so I'm guessing they're 5% faster than the US version?

As I listen to ANH, it appears this is the Special Edition (and you hear Greedo miss, even though the narrator makes no mention and just says Han shoots, ha!).

So somewhere out there, there is an audio version of the 1992/95 version. Still, this is awesome!

Almost done listening to the trilogy and I'm going to post a few comments when I'm all done. ;)

I'm curious about the prequels... since there are so many action sequences, especially the split final battle in Episode I, I wonder how the narrators handle it and if it improves things any.

Now there's a project, if someone wants to synch 'em to the PAL pan 'n' scan of the 1997 VHS tapes...

My thoughts on the recordings:

Pretty darned good! Very entertaining... it's simply fun to listen to all three, especially if you know the movies (and even if you don't). A few times though the narrator will talk over a line or piece of a line (since the movie audio dims slightly while they talk to describe the scene or introduce who is speaking). The fact that it's the PAL version means it's faster paced and it's a bit obvious at times, but still easy to follow for someone who is used to NTSC. I dare say though that I enjoyed listening to these more than the official Radio Dramas!

It's painfully obvious that this is the 1997 SE and at times the narrator even points out stuff that is only in the SE like the big dark shadows under the skiffs in ROTJ.

There were only a few glitches, and the narrators seem to know the official names of everything. For example in ANH they refer to the setting "twin moons" of Tatooine (scene with Luke outside). Certain fans will be happy to know they pronounce "Aaat aats" instead of saying "Aye Tee Aye tee." And they refer to the ROTJ walkers as "spindly aat aats" (AT-STs).

The sound quality is great, although occasionally there will be a little "pop" sound or something that sounds like an electronic glitch.

In ESB a few lines are missing. Han saying "you could use a good kiss!" isn't there for example.

The narration ends at the credits, and the credits music is chopped and abbreviated in all three films. For ANH they introduce the 20th Century fox stuff with the fanfare, the Lucasfilm logo, etc. ESB & ROTJ begin at "A long time ago..." and go from there (it would sound the same of course).

Now again, somewhere out there, are NTSC VHS tapes with the American audio description soundtracks on 'em and the 1995/1992 THX versions to boot!

Author
Time

In the future, it would be awesome to see these soundtracks as an alternate track to a preservation of the 1997 Special Editions (since that's what they're for).

I'm still looking for the "US audio descriptive" version, for the NON-SE's, but no luck yet. As I said, the local libraries in my state claim to have them but every copy I've checked was just the regular "Faces" VHS.

Hello everyone

Nice to see that my original thred has finally been updated with some good news in regards to the films with AD. I am happy to know that others have passed on the links for the special edditions. It was I who originally posted these a cupple of years ago.

Cince then, alot has happend in regards to the audio described versions. first off, I have uptaned a much better coppy of ESB, one without the strange beeps in it. I also now have gotten my hands on the prequels with audio description. These has again been described in the UK. I'd still like to hear the american version of the Phantome menace, I know that hthis should be availible on some uS libraries, so I hope that someone will please try to help out in this matter soon.

Oh, and btw, I saw that Kurkan is still trying to get his hands on the US described version of episode 4. you dont need to look any further, as I have this one as well. I have an mp3-version availible which I can upload should you be intrested.

Well, I hope that this thred keeps getting updated from time to time.

all the best from allan

Well, thanks to Allan (and since the previous links by adywan weren't removed) here are some more files, which will hopefully be useful for our visually impaired friends and for the curious and makers of custom DVDs!

;)

UK (1997 SE) version of ESB... COMPLETE (the music at the end is still abbreviated, but fades out appropriately and the whole recording starts with the 20th century fox logo rather than "A long time ago..." as the one previously uploaded). Additionally, the missing segment with the Probe droid being discovered, listening to the recording of the transmission, etc. are present:

Complete ESB UK (1997)

A New Hope, the full-frame/pan'n'scan, "Faces" (non-SE) US version:

ANH US (1992/95)

(these are audio files only)

Thanks again to Allan for uploading these!
