Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!) — Page 61

Let's face it this set is an open invitation to piracy (not something that I'm advocating but it's obviously going to happen).

Some people not clued up will buy the sets and not even notice how bad they are but a large number of people who would love to have paid for this set will instead pirate the bonus features and maybe TPM.

It such a shame because if you offer most film fans an handsome product they will pay for it.

I for one will not buy the set at least for a long time, if ever.

If it comes out as a selective legal download where I can pick elements I want I will probably get some of it eventually.

My television is too small to get the value benefit of HD anyway and I'm not convinced that optical based media has much of a life left to it.

It will become an issue if a fan editor uses them in a project I'm interested in but as far as I'm concerned I have already purchased this product more times than I can count and I can always visit a friend's house and watch the bonus materials on their television so what's the point of owning it?

If they got the set right almost every single fan would have to have it on their shelves.

Like so much of Lucas's empire the mantra of "It will do" seems to apply to numbers of people who will actually pay for set.

Enough ignorant people and enough compulsive collectors, enough profit, no art, no heart but just enough greenbacks.

Maybe they've had the new transfer ready for years.  We did see the new Yoda as early as 2005.

yes they have. this was documented in an interview years ago that they had the HD transfer ready for a Blu-Ray release

But specifically for Menace, right?  Because if they'd been working on it for a while (by the time the Yoda clip came out the film was already six years old), then maybe since then they've been working on Clones and Sith, and haven't reached the OT yet.

No, they were talking about the OT. That was done and ready to go, so in other words they wouldn't be doing anything else to it.

Ah, I see what you're saying now.  Like someone else had said, I guess it's like the 2006 DVDs: Lucas had some old Laserdiscs to use, so why bother with anything else?  Just like how now he has those multi-year-old transfers (would that transfer even look as good as a transfer today would?).

Yeah, this exact particular product. I wouldn't feel bad downloading a fan edit or preservation based on these blu-rays just like I don't feel bad downloading stuff based on the HD airings, because I already bought this transfer (twice at that - 2nd time with the GOUT). If it is not a new transfer, regardless of the resolution they didn't create any new product, they just dumped the same thing they already had on a different disc. The 2004 SE discs on the GOUT set also weren't the same discs as the 2004 set (the labels on them are actually slightly different) they only had the same content, just like the blus probably will.

In the end, it's all pointless. We are being sold a product that does not contain the product itself.

The only reason we consider the OT good is because we are viewing with nostalgia-colored lenses. If you objectively look at the franchise, SW gets an F based on the PT alone. If you look at the OT itself, it ranges from B+ to D+, depending on your view of ROTJ. LFL is being run by people who should be in a mental hospital; nowadays any DVD they put out is absolute shit. The GOUT is the undisputed champion in having the worst transfer in video history.

I know this may sound tasteless, but maybe GL should have died in that car accident back in '62. We wouldn't have Jar-Jar if that happened.

^People like you are the reason OOT fans have a bad reputation in so many corners of the internet.

Yes, that is an incredibly tasteless thing to say.

Bad enough we had people on here a few years back talking about burying Lucas, (presumably after doing him harm) and creating pictures of his tombstone. These kind of things reflect badly on all of us.

Lucas has frustrated and even pissed me off the past 14 years, but wishing bad things to happen to him? Never...

Maybe we wouldn't have a bad reputation if some guy up in Marin county didn't have a few marbles loose in his head...

Now this goes well beyond what I was mentioning earlier in this thread about people complaining just to complain, you are an ASS! unfrigginbelievable, at least there are a few that agree with me on this.

Very tasteless. The man maybe a shadow of himself these days, but back then he was part of the new wave taking on Hollywood and reshaping it.

And it's not nostalgia; the original movies were great and people loved them at the time, not just years later.

Look, we're still not getting the originals on BD, and every action GL has done in the last 30 years has been more bad than good. There is no hope in the future that GL/LFL will reconsider releasing the originals again. The failure releasing the OOT on DVD has ruined the entire format's reason for existence. Now the cycle is starting all over again on BD, with the added note that we won't even see the OOT.

If you want to call me an ass, that's fine. But that doesn't erase that fact that the PTSE ideology is here to stay, and not even a few crumbs are going to be thrown to the OOT fans. The man has created more harm than good in this world.

Anyway, I guess the next milestone to anticipate and then be disappointed by will be around 2013. When the box is broken down into single releases, and the opportunity to do the "bonus disc" right comes and goes.

Disagree.  Star Wars and ESB were great movies by any objective standard. Even as the SE they are still great, but slightly less so.

Did so just for relevance, and to remind me of the post while I reply to it. I'll avoid it in future.

Wow.  You guys are hitting it on the head when referring to how people think of us.  Just check out the comments on Blu-ray.com.  People mentioning the OOT get minus points, and those that say it's better than nothing and I'm getting it anyway get plus points.  Anyone trying to bring up the originals gets called names.

Every time something like this comes out (despite my HUGE reservations), I always find myslef even more disappointed.  I know it's coming, it's just... when it gets here.... it sucks that much more....

I couldn't have expressed it better.

I just got my 1st blu-ray player for Christmas, and I've been having a blast watching Rocky Horror and a few James Bond blu-rays- they all look great.

I said that I would never buy these films on blu-ray if the original versions weren't included, and this press release hasn't said anything that will change my mind.

What a shame. :-(

I'm at a loss as to why this is the case.  Has the world really gone insane?

Wow, why did I look? My eyes! On the other hand, those guys on that forum seem pretty sad, possibly short bus kids. Probably best to leave them be.
