As fans of the films know, George Lucas has been happy to update and make changes to the original films over the years to achieve results he feels he always wanted to achieve back in the ‘70s. We asked Muren how he feels about updating effects from his work thirty years ago – from wholesale changes to touching up obvious imperfections.

“I was all in favour of doing some redos on the original Star Wars because we ran out of time on that. I wanted to redo about 30 or 40 shots and George wanted to redo some other ones. At some point I think it is OK.”

“But going back and trying to continue updating it based on the newest technology, I don’t know what I think.”

“Garbage mattes, definitely. It really messed up the original VHS tapes of Star Wars because everybody thought it was that way when it came out in the theatres, but of course they weren’t. It was just the transfer wasn’t done quite right.”

“So I’m all for getting it the way you saw it in the theatre – maybe that’s a better way of putting it.”

“As long as the original version is always available, then I think beyond that you can do whatever you want. Based on the generation who is seeing it. But I think the original version should always be available.”

If only they'd throw their weight around.

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one.”

Lucas is so fat, he makes Jabba look fit.

Since they're like poetry, what with the rhyming and all, I find that I only need to watch three out of the six films.

Stob the making with the fatty joke. George isn't that fat for someone his age.

He just needs his colars fixed.

You've been to the mirror universe too? It's great isn't it?

Well... Besides the fact that Fox doesn't cancel their shows leaving them to be overdrawn and kinda lame (I'm looking at you Mirror Firefly!). And the fact that the original trilogy in that universe sucks really bad (But the holiday special is damn good.)

It also kinda sucks that everyone is evil, but at least they all have cool goatees.

That's great news about Dennis Muren. I totally understand that he'd want to be able to fix some of the FX they didn't have time to perfect for the initial release, as long as the original is available as well.

Muren in 1996, American Cinematographer:

However, everyone involved with the Special Edition has a different recollection of how the process came together. "I remember first hearing that they were going to re-release the movies in anticipation of the new series of films," says Dennis Muren, a senior visual effects supervisor for ILM who served as a visual effects second cameraman on the original Star Wars. "A few weeks later, I heard that George was going to add some scenes that he had always wanted to do, and fix some things up. I felt we could improve the matte edges on some shots that had been done at the last minute—particularly those involving explosions. But there were also a number of shots in the space battle where the movements just weren't right. If we could smooth them out, the action would have more clarity, and viewers would be able to follow the movie a little better. I suggested digitally re-doing shots in which the models were moving incorrectly."

Probably the barrel roll shots they CGed.

dennis muren is great. absolutely deserving having hollywood walk-of-fame (the late stan winston needs a spot too).

he didn't do as much work on PT - maybe he could have convinced lucas to stick with costumes for the clone troopers.

its funny reading him mention the space battles.  even in 1997, I thought the only changes that actually blended well and didn't look like they were shoe-horned in were the some of the space battle shots.

20 years from now these guys are gonna be like the 9 old men Walt Disney had.

Oh, the best part about that quote is there are other sources that make Muren out to be the catalyst for changing anything at all. I really need to write that article...

I'm really enjoying the PT bonus disc.  There's a ton of stuff on the models used (even the ones that were only used as reference for CG) and even better, the "play all" button goes through it all so I don't have to pound on my remote.

It's surprisingly well done.  I hope the OT disc is as good.
