I wonder how things would have played out if Marquand / Kershner had decided to do special editions of their own.

Kershner may have actually made an interested alternative cut with some interesting new scenes, but I think it would be a similar deal like the "Aliens Director's Cut" and not really the director's preferred cut. Because he was running into many walls and budget issues, he may have actually wanted to do more...

As for Marquand, I honestly have less faith in him. Sorry. ROTJ wasn't as good in any case...

It's funny just how much Star Wars has changed in my eyes over the last seven years. When the 2004 dvd set came out, I was pretty psyched.

2006 is when it really started going downhill for me. That day in May of '06 when I read confirmation from Bill Hunt at thedigitalbits that the unaltered Star Wars trilogy would in fact be from the laserdisc masters and that Jim Ward's comment about "state of the art, 1993" was quite literal .... oh boy, I lost a lot of respect for Lucasfilm. I would've rather they put out nothing at all than shovel obsolete transfers whilst acting like they were doing us a favor. It was just insulting.

Of course, I had become an avid collector of the comics around 2005 and kept doing so for a while after that, but I must've stopped a couple years ago because I literally can't remember the last time I bought anything Star Wars related.

Just as an aside, a neat little 'what if' I came across on the 'Revisited' Facebook page the other day, was this idea by 'The Cutter', that I'd like to share with anyone who missed it.  It's a small antidote to all the recent reminders of Vader's 'NOOOOOoooooooooo!' near the end of ROTS. ;)

As a recap, the actual 'birth of Vader' scene starts at 4 mins. 01 secs. into this clip -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPTr6nfQ7RI

...but things would have come across a little differently if the end of the scene had been done something along these lines instead! -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GvpT_7BMAc

(I'd quite like to see 'The Cutter's' version starting immediately after Vader asks "Where is Padme?", so that we'd then cut to the Emperor replying "It seems in your anger you killed her", then continue his version, but show the original full footage of Vader breaking free and stepping forward, before then having the Emperor 'cackle' as his close-up fades to the wipe of the Tantive IV...discarding the long shot of Vader yelling 'NOOOOOoooooooooo!)

I have a question if they did not do a entirely new mix for the blu rays, where did they get the extra channel or channels of sound, the last mix was 5.1 EX and this is 6.1. DTS HD MA

Faked it, I'm assuming. The extra channel is a center rear speaker, leak some of the sound from the L and R surrounds to it, ta-da, 6.1!

I mean, if Dolby ProLogic has been able to take a stereo signal and make it 4 channels on the fly for years, certainly the technology isn't beyond LFL's grasp. ;-)

But the whole marketed gimmick was that they did brand new HD audio mixes.

All lies you say?

I've not heard the new mix, but when they talk about making an all-new mix, they only mention doing it for ANH. I guess if Vader's new NOOOO comes out the center rear, than it is a 6.1 mix. ;-)

I know that but according to Ady star wars is not a new mix, so based on that they lied.  The only new thing is the horrible krayt dragon call redo, and the fixed audio in the trench run of the lso horns.

No, ANH is a new mix (even though some of the reversed channels problems remain), but the others sound pretty much the same as the DVDs. They mixed the DVDs as Dolby 5.1EX, which has a matrixed centre surround, so its possible that they used the same original mix files used for the EX versions

Nice to know Wood actually told the truth.

Right, the only difference is that there's a discrete center surround this time instead of a matrixed one.

This post includes shots of a change to the Jedi speed run from the beginning of TPM.  This is one that really needs to be seen in motion, but if done right I support this - the original effect was so unconvincing, I didn't even realize what they were going for.

Not bad, but I heard the description of Vader's thought process is elaborated pretty well in the novel (something like he's trying to reach out and kill Palps, but realizes he's the only person he has left).

Interesting, though from those screenshots I'm more curious as to why there now seems to be a tealish-blue tint throughout the video of AOTC....
