Some answers have come back from the Home Theater Forum questions:
I have some initial answers and will be putting together a full report which will take a few days after I finish digesting some of what I saw and heard. Please note that I won't be providing any additional info until I have a chance to write everythign up. In the meantime here is some info for you to digest:
They used the digital files from the 2004 release as a starting point for the Blu-ray release. They then made a lot of tweaks and fixes:
- Light sabers? Check.
- "Humdinger Glitch"? Check
- Color timing? Check
- Other effect cleanup? Check
The audio for all the films was tweaked. It was readily apparent that it was a labor of love for Matthew Wood who worked with Ben Burtt. Episode 4 got the most attention since originally it was a mono mix with no separation. He went back to the original masters to make the new mix. George Lucas and Ben Burtt were heavily involved in the entire process including balancing the score against the effects. There are a few places where Matthew found some snippets of background dialog that was never used on the masters and he put them in. I'll have additional details as part of our expanded coverage.
I had the opportunity to view some deleted scenes and WOW there is some good stuff there, some great deleted scenes and alternate takes. They have not been "restored" and quality varies clip by clip.
The packaging is very nice. The complete series set is a book with thick cardboard pages and great art (I have pics of each page that I will post with my complete write up. If you opt for either of the three film sets its a standard three disc Blu-ray case in a cardboard sleeve.
As to the original cuts? The company line is this is what George Lucas's vision for the films is. While its up to everyone to vote with their wallet, In my opinion if you boycott this release because of that you are going to be missing a otherwise fantastic release.
They fixed the Humdinger Glitch?

Well, these certainly remain to be seen.
I remain cautiously optimistic. My beef was more with teh 2004 color timing than the special edition changes themselves, though I would of course love to see the originals in pristine quality. If it be pleasing to my eye, I'll probably pick it up.

It's still sad to see such horribleness in the official trailers like the messed up sabers crossed in front of Palpy. I guess they figure the average Joe wouldn't notice or care. (and they're right...)

I'm surprised they would fixate on fixing something minor like this, but deciding not to correct all color timing issues, such as the blue hazes in the trailers.
Also, why was it in the Comic Con presentation? It isn't possible that none of the trailers were the final Blu-Ray; is it?
Yeah, they shouldn't toy with people, especially if certain ones knew that certain things were corrected and certain money would be taken out of certain pockets for a certain purchase...
Right, its like they listened to all we've been saying since Comicon and not understanding what we're saying. I don't see how the Humdinger could make it into that presentation and it be fixed for the final release. They've had 7 years to work on this, and they're making changes into the last month? Hey, that's LFL policy to trust that the viewer will never notice how slipshod the product is. That's why everything they have made since Raiders has that half-assed feel to it, whether it be actual movies or video releases of the movies. It's a silent holocaust, and unfortunately Joe Public will still not care, whether now or 20 years from now. And that is why future DVD releases of SW will always suck.

It's so sad yet so so true. A lot of people would completely accept a DVNR-ed, blue tinted, EE-d monstrosity that has less detail than a laserdisc. :-(

Sheesh.
Okay, perhaps the word "holocaust" was overly dramatic but it is sad that the average consumer doesn't care.

So that's the sound of TV's Frink raping of generalfrevious' holocaust.
On page 32 of the latest edition of DVD review there is an interview with Matthew Wood:
Regarding the sound mix he says:
We have everything here that I could go through and all we have is a 4 track master that we used in 1997 to create the special editions; music, sound effects and dialogue all layered on top of each other with no separation.
So starting in 2004 we began the meticulouse job of going throughall the original elements of sound effects that were in Ben Burtts library.
Finding the original music masters and putting those back in synchronisation with the picture , and then pulling the dialogue from the original 1/4 inch master tapes and all the ADR masters to create a 5.1 or 6.1 master. It was a meticulouse labour of love to make sure every single sound effect, piece of dialogue and music that you heard was from the original..
It was'nt going to be a new piece of dialogue or a new take that you were not familiar with.It all had to have the emotional impact of the original, we just had to update it for the modern soundstage.
We would play the 4 track master that was used in the 70's then carried through the 80's VHS period, through the laserdisc period in the 90's then up until the special editions, then play back all the elements that we had put together from miles and miles of magnetic tape that we transfered into pro tools, rebuilding it in 30 second increments, listening for the right laser, the right darth vader breath, the right foot step.
Luckily we are both huge star wars fans(Wood and Dave Accord--clone wars sound designer) so it was not hard to do because if things were not right you just felt it.
We used our huge fandom as well as our professional prowess to make it work.
I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

To many pages read. What is the overall assessment? Are these any good or not?
Irrelevant I suppose, since I'm not buying them anyway due to the lack of the OT-TV.

These dates get me confused, but why would you start a sound mix the year in which you just released a great new sound mix.

Were not denying that, but outlandish hyperbole and mearly sitting on your ass complaining about it is boring. Less flair, more accuracy, more creativity to your concern might convince someone else.
But speaking of 'being wiped off the map' this review has been pulled down:

google had the opening line as:

Works of art are not people. How many people were wiped off the map by the holocaust?
Get a fucking sense of perspective.
There is a difference between a holocaust (literal or metaphorical) and THE Holocaust (which should be only evoked metaphorically with extreme care).
Holocaust can just refer to destruction on a large scale of anything.
In which case it can, arguably be used as a metaphor for what is happening to the original version of these films.
Even rape (which in it's legal context also should be evoked with some care as a metaphor) can also refer to any act of spoiling and destruction could be used to describe what is happening here.
It's more problematic with the word rape because it's non-sexual, non-legal usage has fallen low in common parlance but holocaust is still frequently used outside of reference to the historical event.

So no one has the original mono, stereo or six track? Just the 4 track master? This new mix is going to be some crazy Frankenstein creation.
