Well it doesn't loon  good for the special features disc (disc 9) for anyone hoping that we're going to get high quality versions of the old docs. Looks like Lucas is pulling a 2006 bonus DVD on us again. I've been having some PM's with someone that knows a bit about the sources used for the discs and i was sent this reply (edited to removed clues to identity)

Ady

After your recent conversations with [deleted] i was asked to contact you because i have a little more knowledge on this subject.

I do know that there have been some minor color alterations but i cannot comment on the extent because this was not my department.

The original special feature documentaries will only be on the final disc in the complete saga collection. These, however, could only be presented in standard definition. While there are copies of 16mm prints for these documentaries, there was no green light given to use these for the source of the special features. Instructions were given to find the digital masters which were used for the original release versions. I am unsure if these were the same used for the VHS or laserdisc copies but a colleague informed me that these masters were produced in the 1980's or 1990's (although i cannot confirm this). As far as i am aware no post production work was done on these masters  to prepare them for the Blu-Ray collection. Having seen [deleted] at [deleted] there seems to be some issues with digital artefacts caused by the interlaced source used and from the original digital conversion. The same procedure was used for some deleted scenes seen in the Empire of Dreams documentary as these scenes were also taken from older digital copies.

He went on to give me some more information that i cannot post here because it may reveal his identity. So it doesn't look good for all of the original trilogy stuff then :(

Lucas too cheap to allow then to use the negatives or even a 16mm prints, instead makes them use the same low res master as the vhs/laserdisc.

No documentaries in HD, no empire of dreams, no from star wars to jedi and no original versions of the original trilogy.  Now i have to see if he found a way to botch the deleted scenes too so i can cancel my order for this set.

Why has it come to this that the Lucasfilm  brand and quality are so non existent, and that Lucas has become synonymous with disappointment, its like every thing he does these days is just to disappoint fans, almost, but even i don't think Lucas is that sadistic.

Its like he is in a different world and does not get it.  Good Businessman, terrible artist if he wants his works presented in poor quality like messed up colors.

Adywan's digging up this source leads me to believe these are the masters for the Japanese laserdiscs, hopefully before the subtitles.  They were the last digital masters made for the documentaries.  Unless they also had special tape masters made for the sci fi channel.

What would have been cool would have been the lost cut with audio commentary on a second track by David West Reynolds, unfortunately now the oot are also rough cuts and neither will ever be seen or presented on blu ray disc.

The 501st doc might be in HD! and many of the spoofs will be in HD!!, so there's some grand news for ya!!!  The deleted scenes will most like be in the same resolution and quality as the GOUT as they were probably scanned with the same machines at the same time, early-mid 90s.  But you never placed that order.

So what's known about the increase in scanning technology in the last 15 years?  Do the new machines capture info which past machines couldn't or has scanning technology more or less plateau'd for the visual field?  On one hand old scan's mean the film source was in better quality then it is today.

Generally speaking, yes, scanning technology has improved because things are being scanned at higher and higher resolutions compared to 15 year-old scans, 4K and higher being used more often these days, whilst far lower was perfectly acceptable in those days. However, there are exceptions, the 2004 set was apparently scanned at only 1080p resolution, even though it 2K was supposedly used more even 7 years ago. You are right though, the films do age; however, they're stored better these days than before, so there might not be that much loss in the last 15 years. Someone else can probably fill in a lot more...

As for the deleted scenes, I doubt they were scanned at GOUT times... I'm not sure why he would have reason to scan it back then. Mostly he seemed much more focused on restoring the movies when he found out the negative was falling apart. I suppose it's feasible they were scanned during the making of the Special Editions. Still. I doubt Lucas would hold onto those scans for that long and just release it now. Sadly, this could just be the optimist in me, as he's done more than odd things before. :-(

Hopefully none of the deleted scenes are taken from whatever the low res source that was used on the behind the magic cd-rom.

Knowing Lucas though it would not surprise me.

I guess we should be happy we are getting deleted scenes at all, the indiana jones trilogy set was noticeably absent of them as well as the old documentaries, and of course Spielberg never does audio commentary as far as i know.

It could be different. At least the Treadwell scene is a later color version; they also seem to run a correct 24 fps and not 12 fps like the cd-rom.

Off-topic but I'm pretty sure the Indy Blu set is coming next year and I wouldn't be surprised if it included deleted scenes.

I only wish that were true about the oot.

All we got for a response was including them on the current blu set was an oxymoron and there are pipelines.

Sure there are pipelines, connected to the toilet and it stinks as much as the lies of why the real original movies are not on the blu set.

My Force Beam (eighth birthday present from Gamley's) was 'red' but looked orange enough to convince a terrified girl at my birthday party that it was a bar from an electric fire I was whirling around, the added fact that I was dressed up in my Dracula costume probably didn't help sooth her nerves.

My uncle's girlfriend sat on it, bent it and made the end pop off which is possibly a factor in my preference for members of the same gender.

Oof...  Yeah, I probably would have sworn off women in that case too.

I mean, I'd update the title or something, but is anyone really surprised that they're busting out the Laser Discs for this release? Did anyone really think they'd give us those documentaries in respectable quality?

Unbelievable. It is a god damn travesty that this garbage is going to sell like hotcakes to the uneducated masses.

Technically though all the OT stuff that's been changed or re-created for the SE should count as "deleted scenes"... ;-)

If we only get the Deleted Scenes in SD, what would it be good for?

The Blu-Ray Full Trailer in 1080p resolution indicates that the shown deleted scenes are only SD-video-quality:

Star Wars BD: D7 - Extended Scenes Ep 1-3 - [46:10]

Star Wars BD: D8 - Extended Scenes Ep 4-6 (Part 1) - [27:48]
Star Wars BD: D8 - Extended Scenes Ep 4-6 (Part 2) - [19:33]

45min of deleted scenes for each trilogy? I thought it was for the whole saga. If those are in HD, I might consider buying the saga boxset.

Those 45min each will be filled with introduction videos from some guy talking about the scene for sure. So raw footage length will be much less. But you are true - it's quite something!

BTW: The Pod-Racing, that walmart released last monday, is now in 1080p on starwars.com/movies/saga:

Hello people,

I don't post very much around here (my first post in this thread actually), but I came across this:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/313950/chance-to-talk-to-lucasfilm-about-the-new-star-wars-blu-rays-what-do-you-want-to-know

I wonder if we'll learn anything new from Dennis Muren or Matthew Wood there...

Adam Gregorich at hometheaterforum.com

We will have the opportunity later this week to talk with Dennis Muren the Creative Director of ILM about the VFX of the Star Wars films, Matthew Wood of Skywalker Sound about the audio mix for the Blu-rays and Kayleen Walters from Lucasfilm Ltd about the Blu-rays.

You know in a year or so there will probably be a release of the original Star Wars. And by that I mean the B&W rough edit just to screw with us and to reiterate that the SE is the vision.

I do think the OT is the 2004 dvd but in the new videos they look a little better the sink is not pink in the x-wing clip and the Death Star is not as blue. But Lukes sink is pink is the Carbon scene. For new, videos, and pic's go to http://www.starwars.com/movies/saga/ thanks for reading: )

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Is it just me or are the colours REALLY looking better ?

The problem is that I haven't seen the 2004 version since ... probably 2004 :-)

Author

The colars look rather good in places and in other places (like some of the pilot shots) there seems to be a pinkish tinge creeping in (or is that just my eyes playing up?).

EPISODE 4

EPISODE 5

EPISODE 6

The color dose look better.I wish they would have had the the Episode 4 a clip like 30 sec. longer so we can see if they fixed the lightsaber in that part.

I agree with Bingo. These are the 2004 versions and now have been brightened or mixed with additional colors. The result looks good in places but bad in others.

ANH clip still looked dark - too bad they don't want to show Luke's saber in that scene. ESB pilot shots and ROTJ seemed a little pink.

Yes it dose look a littel pink but I think the color is better than the dvd is most shots of the scenes.

C'mon people, don't give in to lowered expectations! These are not good transfers. VADER'S LIGHTSABER IS FREAKING PURPLE!

OK, so maybe it isn't the same shitty transfer. It's the same shitty transfer with some colour correction and some "colour bastardization"
