Wow!
I do believe that answers the question remarkably definitively.
Wow!
Wow. Indeed, if the artifact weren't there, it still could have been the 2004 transfers. But seeing that the artifact IS there, is proof that they are. What a bunch of pathetic lazy idiots. Where's kenkraly now? Oh, maybe they're still going to do the new transfers in August...

Back to Adywan's Revisited trilogy...

With all respect to Ady and the fine work he does on them, his Revisted projects aren't the 1997 or the 2004 SEs let alone the OUT.
If we are to going to back to anything in this context it's the preservation work of many people on these boards and presumably elsewhere (including Ady).
People who want to buy these sets will not get the complete saga (so on box description as misleading as the poster text on Coppola's Dracula).
If they are happy with that, they are happy with that.
I argue that they wouldn't have been unhappy with a well made set but clearly enough ears are deaf.
It's pretty obvious now that what we want will not be made available through official circles in my lifetime.
It would be laughable if it wasn't so culturally tragic.

I know they aren't. But they fix many problems I have with the 2004 SE, and that's fine by me.

Finally, a clear and indisputable proof that the 2004 masters are being used for the Blu-Ray.
Now, the quality of the video that Ady posted isn't very good, so you can't judge from the colours or crushed blacks and other indicators of the 2004 transfer. At best, you can make an educated guess based on stuff like the blue haze around the explosion, like Ady did. But if you know the facts around SW transfers well enough, the definite proof is there.
A little story first: Not so long ago, an encoding error in my Despecialized Edition was pointed out to me, so I went and checked if it's also in the source file I used (a 720p encode of a German HDTV broadcast capture) and it was. So I went on and checked Adywan's AVCHD and it was there too. But both Adywan and I were using the German HDTV broadcasts for our edits, so I assumed the error must have been in the German broadcast capture but just to be sure, I went, dug up a DVD9 on which I had a UK HDTV broadcast capture burned and checked it there and it was there too. Suspicious, huh?
So I went to the OFFICIAL 2004 DVD and checked there and couldn't believe my eyes!!!
Here's the frame from the !!!OFFICIAL!!! retail 2004 DVD (check out the bottom of the frame):
So, it is quite clear, that this error is a part of the 2004 master, as it seems to appear in it's every incarnation, including the official DVD releases...
... and now, that very same frame from the Blu-Ray preview video:
It's relatively hard to make out due to the bad quality but when you know what you're looking for, it's quite clearly there.
Even though they have used the 2004 master there maybe evidence that they have altered/enhanced the colour pallete.
Even on the low resolution youtube clip the blu ray version looks more vibrant than either the 2004 DVD or the GOUT.
I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

That's probably just a side effect of it being shot from a screen with a camera.
I don't understand you, people. We all KNEW they are using the 2004 master, so why are you surprised ?

Some people here, myself included, had a small hope that they were not using the 2004 versions. Until this there was no proof that they were using it. Heck, even the 2004 DVD's chapter selection used the '97 SE footage. Who would say they were not doing the same with the iPad app and the rest?

I don't think that's true, actually. We all believed they were using the 2004 master, but we did not know it. We didn't have any real evidence, besides that one trailer, and, as many pointed out, trailers are not always a good indicator of what will actually be released.
But the belief was so strong that it was an easily foregone conclusion.

There's a difference between believing and having proof that you can use to explain to someone else why your belief turned out to be correct.
Official credit goes out to canofhumdingers for spotting this error, and should be named in his honor:

Maybe 'CanofallErrors', this forum should be able to figure out a nice catchy name for this 'feature'. 'The Official Humdinger'?
Once the disc is release will be interesting to compare this frame to the HD version which seemed closer to the original source, as the error is clearer and show less sign of re-compression. pic here:

But on the Cut Scene material, it's a great thing to see, and the quality they have been provided in will just spark the community to develop clean up skillz for the eventual fan scan. But the Treadwell scene looks worse then what I remember the black/white version from Behind the Magic cdrom, will do a cross comparison. That Luke going off into the sandstorm shot is so sweet. Wonder if Kurtz's has been remembering that shot all these years and he's wished that the movies ended with this shot.
*EDIT*
Top is Behind the Magic 'Lost Cut' version and below the recent blu-ray cutscene preview. So even after the Lost Cut this sequence was still worked on as they've revised the second shot. On the dirt aspect, the one vertical bar (far left) is in both.
Dirt comparison:
Now, as we just learned that BD set will contain the 2004 master, we know that the colars will not be fixxxxed. As always, we got Kenkraly response about that.

These flaws with the OT transfer from 2004 don't bother me at all why it bothers some fans I don't get. at all. It won't stop me from buying the blu-ray box set if it is indeed the case that the flaws are not fixed. If some don't like it then don't buy the set. I had hold'ed out hope for the erorrs from 2004 to be fixed but if their not I can deal with that.

I can remember that months ago he said he IS sure that everything will be fixed. Now, what do you have to say Kenkraly? You should come here and apologize everybody.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.
I LOVE that the glitch is in the preview video. I will be content without the bonus features then. No new/fixed transfer = no purchase.
Hell, I just told my wife about the glitch and that this is the same messed up transfer and she said "we won't buy it then!"

@005: Yeah, the moment I found out that the preview video is from the battle of Yavin, I immediately set out to search for that glitch and sure enough, it was there. I also posted about it over at HTF. People need to know and I wanted the news to reach a wider audience :-)
They still might have fixed some things, like the worst lightsabre problems, as even the gushers are complaining about those (or at least agreeing that they are a problem), and it would be super easy for LFL to fix those, so if they didn't even do that, it means that they seriously don't give a f*ck at all any more.

Hah! I saw that scene in the youtube preview and wondered if the glitched frame was visible somewhere.
Also thought that the vaporator scene looked a little different from what I remembered. Nice to know.

That cover art... It's just bad. So bad. That probably is the worst I've seen on BD yet.

This is a completely new avenue, a famous film is being released with an error, not once but twice. On one hand it will be phun to see how the general public responds (most likely "who cares it's one frame") but it'll be interesting to see if future theatrical releases continue with this. Might have been done on purpose, a digital glitch watermark. ...at least that's how'd i'd spin it at this point.
