Isn't the audio on the DVD of The Conversation a remix?

I think the US release have a 5.1 remix, my region 2 DVD have the original mono track though.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Well, that is super cool that some of you really like these mono audio tracks, more power to you, but I just can't sit and watch a movie with a mono track on my system, not only would I bitch about it, but so would my Family LOL, who in the hell only wants to listen to audio out the center speaker ONLY? not us(my Family and I) I just recently upgraded ALL my speakers and receiver to take FULL advantage of ALL the sweet HD audio options on Blu-rays now, my God what an experience it has been so far, we just watched both Transformer movies to get ready for the third and damn does it sound like you are right there fighting along side Optimus, I can't believe all I was missing, even on my Star Wars BD25, I just can't watch it with the mono track, it just sux, at least to me.

OH, and I can't wait to hear the HD audio on this Saga Set coming in Sept.!

Mono tracks don't come from just the centre speaker, it is just one discrete channel of sound. Most receivers automatically split the sound over at least your two front stereo speakers. Up until recently, a lot of TV broadcasts were in mono, but you didn't just hear it from the right speaker, you just didn't get the directional effect of stereo. It's like mono mixed records from before the 1970s, you usually had more than one speaker but you didn't have multi-channel discreteness.

Well on my new system 1 channel mono comes out just the center speaker just like it is supposed to, dual channel mono comes out my towers like it is supposed to, to my Family and I, we don't like either, but having it, I like, just for completeness is all, but I will never listen to it, not anymore, I want to be engulfed in my movies, I do not like that tin can sound at all, spent to much money on a very nice setup to want that anymore, like I said, I can't wait to hear this new BD Saga Set coming, I bet it is going to be very, very good sounding!

and like I also said, I am happy for those that like the sound of mono with there movies, that is great for them, I am glad you like it, but that is just waaaay to old school for me now.

It probably isn't intentional, but there is no small amount of an air of snobbery in this quote. Just in case you don't realize how you are coming off.

No "mono movie" mode like Yamaha amps have, or one to spread the sound around your speakers? What do you do with an old movie that hasn't been remixed?

I saw Singin' in the Rain on the big screen last year, and the mono was pretty darn good. Theaters had great sound systems even in the 50's, and mono was not being pumped out of one tiny speaker.

Stereo tv broadcasts have been around since the mid 1980's. (And there was FM simulcasting before that.) I noticed a lot of old shows like I Love Lucy were processed on the fly into fake stereo at the time. Not sure when or why that practice was discontinued.

I am not opposed to remixes done with respect and care. (Something that wasn't done with the '94 SE DVD of Star Wars.) But, when it's done to movies where the original personnel are no longer around, that's when irritating mistakes creep in. Wizard of Oz and Pinnochio are good examples of this.

Where were you in '77?

Whatever CP3S, you take it any friggin way you want to, no one can change that, I grew up watching the original trilogy in the Theaters, so I am not that young, but even I can move forward and accept the new tech. always leave it to someone to find something hidden in a message whether it was intended OR NOT, good for you, and thanks for pointing that out, whether intentional, or not.

Not necessarily. But obviously, given that this is the case, it makes 100% sense for you not like the mono-mix.

Also, you may want to use periods sometimes. I am really not sure what some of that post meant.

My version is the 5.1.  I don't have surround in my viewing room, so it's two-channel stereo for me. Sounds fantastic.  No loss of the layers and subtleties. Same for my audio rip.

This is what the Encoding Guidelines says for mono on the DOLBY site:

Decoders output 1/0 mode (mono) signals to either the Center channel or Left and
Right channels when the Center channel is not available. It is unnecessary and
therefore not recommended to encode mono signals in 2/0 mode.

Many recievers have a listening mode, on mine it is called direct, that bypass all effects and surround settings so that the audio remains as close to the source audio signal as possible. If you don't have it, you could just change your setup and tell it that you don't have a Center speaker, then it will automatically steer the mono to both L and R speakers. The quality of that sound is of course dependent on the quality of the receiver doing the steering to the fronts.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I don't think DJ is looking for a solution to his mono in center channel only problem.
