Star Wars Trilogy tops IGN's "Most Wanted DVDs" — Page 2

I know this is all old, but it really sucks that Richard Marquand is dead and yet an entire MUSICAL NUMBER and altered ending was put into the movie he directed. How come the DGA or some artist's rights group isn't more pissed off about that? (even if Marquand wasn't a member then, they get pissed over a lot less). And it doesn't matter that Lucas paid the bills, etc. He had a cow when the studio cut 3 minutes out of American Graffiti. Ugh, how can I still be aggravated by this? I thought I'd be over it by now. Lucas quit the DGA after being fined for Empire, IIRC. (Also supposedly one of the reasons he couldn't hire Spielberg to direct Jedi, alas.) The DGA can't bug him now even if he puts dancing Ewoks in every scene. And some rumors persist Lucas ghost directed most of Jedi...

If you notice ESB is the least changed cause Kershner is still alive. The original SW is Lucas's movie, so that has the most changes, ROTJ has the second most changes, and to me the most major changes, cause Marquard died in 1987. If you Marquard were alive, we would still have Sebastian Shaw........................

ESB has the least changes because its the most well made. It relied on human actors and not effects. So unless Lucas creates a CGI harrison ford or replaces the yoda puppet theres not much more he can do to "improve" it.

And i have a feeling Marquand would be fine with the musical number, especially since he already was shooting a musical number in Jedi to begin with (it was edited down because the technology was thankfully not yet advanced to allow filmmakers to produce such crap). Marquand was what we calla puppet director. ROTJ was always more Lucas' film than Marquand.

The films are already out on DVD, at least unofficially in Fan preservations. Thats why most of us are here. Hopefully someday we will see official releases, but I don't expect any until Lucas retires, has a massive change in heart, or hits bottom and has to release the originals because he needs the cash.

As for why does Empire have the least changes, I think it is because it 'needed' the least changes. It didn't have any musical numbers, earlier film techology, etc, and no contridictary references to the preqels (Anakin force ghost). Although Empire is seeing its fair number of changes, such as the poorly done Ian McDiarmid as the emperor instead of Clive Revel.

Mostly what Lucas changed in the trilogy were technological stuff. New battle shot, new Death Star explosion, stupid crap in the background that no body gave a shit about anyway. That kind of thing. Even then he was basing a lot of his movies on niffty ILM shots (not that I'm ragging on the OT for that). But ESB was about heart, romance, and the internal journey. That sort of thing. You can't fix an inner monologue like you can a Tie Fighter blowing up. That is why it was pretty much left alone, except for the stuff that didn't need to be fixed (i.e. "Bring my shuttle......because I need it......since I'm going to my Star destroyer.....and I'm really pissed off.")

Oh and the DVDs from Nickelodeon were "Invader Zim." Nick really treated that show like crap. But at least they sucked up their pride and gave us the DVDs after they saw how mad us fans had become.

Heh, I love that post, Jenny. Even when the SEs first came out, and I enjoyed them and watched the pre-movie documentary where George pointed out all the changes, I would think, "Okaaaay, he made a window there... that's... nice. Big deal." It seems that George has become quite the interior decorator.

So do you guys think that this is just another maneuver for Lucas to make more money. Most of the fans have wanted this version to be realeased all along as they did on VHS!

Lucas would make a good chunk of change if he released the OOT on DVD, no doubt about it. But his eventual release (because it WILL happen) of the OOT will not be for money. It will be due to pressure from the fans and the company, or his eventual death. But doing it for the money? No. Lucas has stated many times that he would actually loose money if he put it out on DVD (which is bull, but then again Lucas likes to make up crazy crap all the time.)

What the hell is Lucas smoking? I know it doesn't cost that much to release movies on DVD. If anything movies that have died in the box office have actually made more money on DVD mainly because of the turnaround. What he is thinking s that all the marketing cost and hype of releasing the O-OT would make him lose money. But the acual cost of makeing the discs should be nil. And we know he has nice clean versions of the O-OT without the additions. Not everything they release on DVD has to have a huge marketing push. A modest one will get the news out. Lucas if you release it we will buy. And tha's the bottom line.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

Not to spam: But they're finally coming. This September.

We'll see how much these things really sell now, won't we. Of course, you have to buy em in a 2 disc set with the 2004 versions, but hey.

What makes me most excited is that it actually is the theatrical release, sans the Episode IV: A New Hope and everything! Too bad the stupid 2004 releases have to be on there as well (already own them and don't feel like having them twice), but I'm too excited to really care!

I've thought about that, but I'll probably end up keeping mine simply because the bonus 4th disc is worth keeping.
