“Get over violence, madness and death? What else is there?”
Also known as Mr. Liquid Jungle.
Here’s one of the more interesting shots, as on technicolor prints this location (and the Tarkin/Leia scene) was lit/graded quite differently than for later scenes, where blue tones dominate the scenes:
I remember the briefest period on this forum where I felt like I was near the top of the list in terms of color correction and color grading skill. Then DrDre came along and moved the bar so incredibly high the rest of us could never reach it.
Consistently impressed by your work, DrDre. Keep it up!

Wow, seriously stuck the landing, ha I want it already.
Just here to echo everyone else and say great work, faithful and pleasing, can’t wait to see more!

Thanks everyone! Here are four more shots, after which I will be taking a short break to work on other projects related to TESB and ROTJ:
Here’s the full set of regraded shots:
I expect to continue on this in a week or two, so no updates until then…
Here’s an update of the color grading:
…and here’s the same color grading applied to the opening shots of 4k77:
Looking slightly more pink/magenta than before (not a bad thing), really feeling that vibrant technicolor it’s got a rich punch to it. And wow, a version of 4k77 that finally looks right to me. Could just be jpeg compression but I do see some artifacts in the star field, goes away lower the black point, obviously without killing any of that sweet, preserved detail.

For those that prefer a less warm, contrasty, and saturated color grading than the technicolor inspired color grading, here’s an alternative that achieved with single LUT applied to the technicolor grading:
…and here’s how it translates to the opening shots of 4k77:
I just want to put out a little reminder. These shots are consistently jaw-dropping and have a perfect balance to my eyes. I want to thank you, Dr Dre, for putting in all this work. These look absolutely stunning. Thank you very much Dre
Is this treatment going to be applied to the DNR 4k77 as well?

Hey Dre, have you considered applying your colour grading sensibilities to the PT at all? Obviously AOTC and ROTS were shot digitally so the Bluray releases have, give or take an odd tint, the original colours, but I think it would be interesting to imagine the look they’d have if they were shot like the OT. Of course, it no longer falls under preservation, and there would be no reference film frames to work off or anything of the sort. Just something I’d be interested to see your take on if you ever fancy a break from your excellent work on Star Wars, Empire and Jedi.

I haven’t considered it, but once I finished the OT, it might be something to think about. 😃
The same color grading applied to the opening sequences of 4k77 has been applied to the bluray:
Good work Dre! Very filmic !
I’ve kept experimenting using the Neverar’s edition at 60% and the bluray with a my single grade at 40%
but I’ve got the issue that they are off sync by 2 frame or sometimes 3 frames.
However this is the result 😃
