Star Wars Trilogy: "COLD" Edition (MKV's Available Now)

COLD is an acronym for Comparison Of Low Definition.

This is a split screen version which uses the following releases for comparison:

1985 Japanese Special Collection Laserdisc

1997 Special Edition Laserdisc

2004 Special Edition DVD

2006 Bonus Disc “GOUT”

I have synced everything to the 2006 Bonus Disc because I was only interested in comparison of original footage.  This means that “Special” footage will be incomplete or excised for the most part. There is an audio track, but this is mainly a visual tool for comparison of the different Standard Definition releases mentioned above.

Video Format…: MKV (x264)

Resolution…: 1440x1080

FPS…: 23.976

Here you will find all of the scripts necessary to generate the "COLD" files from the source files.

You will also need:

The 2004 DVD R1 NTSC release. (I used DGINDEX with forced film selected to IVTC)(This requires that you first extract the correct PGC for the english crawl or you'll get intertwining crawl languages because of the different angles)

The 2006 R1 NTSC Bonus Discs.(I used DGINDEX with forced film selected to IVTC)

The HF9G JSC raw captures.

The HF9G 97SE raw captures.

I love this idea, and I'll be looking forward to downloading.

These are fantastic. I got Ep 4 on a whim and loved it so much that Ep 5 and Ep 6 were downloading seconds later and they are just as good....

4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 2

This is an amazing project! Thanks, althor1138!

Please release your 97SE GOUT-sync script! :-)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

The 97SE script is a part of the COLD script which I will be porting into this thread someday soon hopefully lol. It assumes that you are using my raw files as input though so if you want to use another source you might have to trim the start and end to make it match up.  Even then, there might be a few frames missing from the laserdisc that aren't missing from another source.  I know there was some funky stuff happening in ROTJ when R2 and C-3PO are at Jabba's palace trying to open the door for example. Mileage might vary but it could be a good jumping off point instead of starting from scratch.

I don't plan on upping these to the spleen anytime soon so if somebody wants to then please feel free to do that.

SW: CE is available on the spleen now.  Once that has a few snatches I'll move on to ESB.

Haha, yeah this should definitely not be some kind of color grading tool.  It's more like a hey that's cool kind of thing.

It's also helped me notice several things that are different that I didn't notice before just by having them visually represented this way.

Can somebody who got SW:COLD from a.b.sw tell me whether or not that mkv file has audio ?

I got all three from there. I just checked Star Wars and it definately has audio. So do the other two in case you're wondering.

I see that you went for yub nub over victory celebration at the end of ROTJ, the two special editions are feeling a little neglected haha I'm with the two SE versions on this one, I prefer victory celebration, fits the end of the trilogy better IMHO.

Traitor! Haha j/k. Thanks for the confirmation about the audio.  For some crazy reason the one on the spleen is missing audio. I'm thinking that people will have to mux their own in for the time being unfortunately.  Btw, there is a version 2 possibly in the works that syncs to the 04 versions instead so you could watch every scene in entirety.  It will be a long time before it is finished though.

Thanks for posting these to myspleen.  So far I've looked through at just a few spots.  Wow, the beginning of Jedi is YELLOW on the JSC!
