I too prefer the 1997 to theatrical. I think 1997 versions were an honest attempt to improve the original versions. Plus I can't stand Yub-Nub.

The 2004 and 2011 on the other hand, were just an opportunity for Lucas to infest the OT with his PT parasites (Hayden, NOOO etc.).

Although I love the 97 version for its place in history and my memory I must remind with you about the 97 versions being 'honest'. Although the 2004 n 2011 have additional changes and color and sound fuck ups, there was still bad Dino's and a certain green alien who is now quicker on the draw than Clint. lets not even get into the Jabba scene.

Interesting your comment about nub nub, although that's what I grew up with on VHS I have grown to prefer the new ending score (although I fully accept it does not match the images).

I am proud to say I remember the 80’s!

I did not forget about Greedo. It is a stupid change but for some reason I can "tolerate" it compared to the ghost scene change.

As for Jabba, I don't have the slightest problem with that scene. Unlike some of the fans who are just against any kind of CGI (kinda dumb imo), I don't find CGI problematic at all. If CGI is used for a good purpose and mainly to augment the real set scenes, then I am completely fine with it.

Did not the '97SE get a theatrical release? ;)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Keep in mind that the special editions still had the "Greedo shoots" change, all the terrible and pointless "Episode 1" flavored CGI added to Mos Eisley, and Jar Jar's voice at the end of ROTJ....Plus, there's the terrible scream from Luke in the SE version of TESB.

However, I will agree that they're "better" than the 2004 versions, but the 2004 versions of each film are "better" than the Blu Ray versions, and the Blu Ray versions of each film will be better than the 3D versions coming out in a few years.

You know what's better than them all though?

The ORIGINAL versions.

Jar Jar's voice isn't at the end of the 1997 version of RoTJ, is it?

Nope, hell Naboo wasn't even in the 97 SE. I love the SE's as much as the originals. It's a shame we never got these on DVD.

I know this is a necro, but this gets at one of my biggest problems with the 2004 edit: the extended ending. In the '97 cut, it's a wonderful alternate ending with great music and pacing. In the 2004 cut, all the additional scenes make it drag on /way/ the heck too long. I'm not going to say '97 is better than the original (it's kind of a six of one, half a dozen of the other situation), but I will say '04 is worse. Much, much, much worse.

I think everyone on this site can agree to that.

Can someone recreate the deleted Jabba Scene? from "a new hope" with? the actor Declan Mulholland in HD? The available version of a reconstruction is bad because you can see the stencils and the quality differences of the sources, also a color correction is missing.

And I also want to see the final version from 1997 in HD, with and without original cinema subtitles. If someone needs some source, I have a DVD Transfer from a 1997 German Laserdisc, with original German cinema subtitles.

And color correction & picture cleaning of the official Blu Ray deleted scenes would also be nice.

guys can anyone help me get a copy of the 1997 special editions on dvd from the laserdiscs ?

I have a DVD-Transfer of the 1997 German Laserdiscs of all three movies, in great quality with original German cinema crawl and subtitles, but without German sound, only a low quality English sound and better Hungarian sound, both in Dolby Stereo.

I know Team Blu will be releasing awesome versions of the '97 SE, but until then could someone make a comprehensive list of the versions that are already available right now for '97 SE? (also feel free to make comments about how they compare to each other quality-wise).

I'm thinking that Adywan's 14GB .mkv of Empire Strikes Back is probably the best '97 edition of that movie right now (that I know of anyway) but I don't think he's released '97 editions of the other two.

Honestly Return of the Jedi is the one I'm mostly interested in, because even though the theatrical version is by far my favorite to watch, 1997 was the last time Return of the Jedi was released without changes that stab me in the heart (unlike the other 2 movies). I don't mean to downplay the horribleness of other changes to the trilogy, but the 2004 and 2011 changes to Return of the Jedi specifically are literally traumatizing to watch.

Thank you very much russs15! I don't know if a more up to date list exists, but at least you've provided something to refer to.

I might be wrong, but the GKar edition and "TB release" seem to be the two best so far. I don't know how the others on that list measure up, but I am curious.

I checked my DVDs, which I mentioned in September,  they are better than laserdisc, must be some digital TV-record from about 2002-2004, only the sound is crap.

Thanks skywalker89, but unless I'm mistaken it sounds like the GKar and TB releases would still be superior to your DVDs because they have good sound. However I do have a problem with how they sound because they are both PAL, so they sound a bit too high pitched (I don't know if there's a way to play PAL releases so that they don't sound this way).

They are also sourced from HD broadcast, not laserdisc. They may not be true HD captures, but they have a good picture (I noticed the GKar was one of Harmy's sources for his Return of the Jedi Despecialized HD).

I've quickly looked at the two of them and it seems like the GKar is slightly better looking than the TB (just by a little bit), but with the TB you get the English opening titles.

I have the 97 5 Star Editions and the TB versions for posterity.  The only bummer about the TB versions is that I have only found them in a 4GB size.  Kinda stinks but it is what it is and since I own the Laserdiscs it's not a real issue for me.

Since we have the 97 DTS cinema audio, TeamBlu's versions will probably be the best of the bunch once they're ready.

I have tried to download the 5 Star Edition of Return of the Jedi, but nobody is seeding it. How does it compare to TB and GKar?

TeamBlu's work is exciting!

It is simply a laserdisc capture.  It looks fine on a CRT TV but once it hits a hi-def screen it loses a lot of luster.

Having the actual discs and original case art was the draw for me and I got mine fairly cheap.
