how close is this to completion?

id like to see your go at restoring this classic since ocp ce v2 was just plain awful though i liked v1.

Paul, You rock at this. I love it. You did a fantastic job. As with your Empire Strikes Back project, You have done Star Wars 1977 justice. If only Lucas did the same... I hope that your Return of the Jedi cut goes well if you do it.

You're right, it's about time for an update.

Well just to get it out of the way, I need more ram. I'm not asking for contributions (with my history of vapor-ware projects how dare I?), I can afford it just fine--I just need to do some shopping at newegg. I'm going to toss another two gigs into my computer. A dual core processor with three gigs of ram should handle 1080i playback in Premiere Pro just fine. It's awfully disheartening now to wait the whole of about three to four seconds to find out this is not the exact frame I wanted to look at, you know?

The big update. I sort of started over on a completely new time-line. I decided that if the final product was going to be 480p, then I'm really just wasting time working with a slow 1080i file, so I've decided the first and foremost release is a 720p mp4 compressed to DVD-9 size (don't worry it'll look great), and then an approximately two to three gig sized 720p mp4 optimized for playback on the Xbox 360. The h.264 codec is just too pretty to pass up this kind of opportunity to see the original Star Wars in HD. I'll probably also put out a 480p, mpeg2 encoded DVD. But the thing to watch out for is the 720p file.

Other update, I've made sure this time that this edit will be in complete sync with the GOUT. This means that any audio mix that has been or can be synced to the GOUT, can be synced to this edit (with the mp4, you can use media player classic to do the dubbing and watch whatever GOUT synced mix you want in high definition). I ran a test file, and until the video started blinking for no apparent reason, I was having the time of my life watching the original Star Wars color corrected, in high def, with the restored mono mix

Has anyone who's done any fanediting ever run into that problem where you encode a file, only to find an extra frame from a cut shot appear out of nowhere, flashing on screen after the cut you've made? Usually I would just cut back the shot by a couple more frames than the actual end of the shot, but these edits have to be frame accurate, since I'm syncing to the GOUT. Well I'm just trying to find a solution . I'm sure I can do a lot more experimenting when my comp is running a little faster.

Alright that's the size of things right now. For anybody disheartened at all by the slow-mo of this project, there is another member of the forums who recently announced a preservation attempt, one of which he has put more than a year's work into, and evidently is almost done (would be rude to name names). So with my focus shifting to an HD release, I'm hoping he'll come forward more publicly soon with a great 480p preservation.

for the love of god please tell me you are going to do a dual layer dvd 9 480p.

you owe me or no one on these forums anything, yet i have been waiting for this release on dvd as the gout is unwatchable. i have the gout upscaled to anamorphic on sl dvd and it sucks.

funny how it is the best home video release ever for the oot and star wars, best it has ever looked and sharpest picture. notice how i said the best home video source so far for the original original trilogy, i did not claim it came close to the 35mm and 70mm prints that ran during its theatrical runs.

the closest release i have ever seen to the original cinema releases is the japan special collection even though the picture is shifted way up in the frame on standard definition tvs.

the japan special collection and us derived from same video master pre thx releases don't have the dvnr smearing.

Man I'm really pumped for this.

Lately I've really wanted to watch SW and I think I'm going to hold out for this, however long that may be.

This is Premiere Pro's color pass filter applied straight to the wmv-9. No avisynth filters or avs files. I didn't know that's what a color pass filter was even for before this, but damn it's doing its job. Keep in mind this is a test run, I was just seeing if it would be worth while to do.

This is a terrific project Paul--thank you so much for doing this. Things are looking good so far.

First up though--starfields, engine effects and blasters. On the 2004 DVD the starship engines don't have a glow in many shots---see the shot of the Falcon you posted and the Tantive IV. If you really want to be anal these should be colored, but with the method you are using that might mean hand-rotoscoping of some kind (you could possibly overlay them from another source--the GOUT unfortunately has aliasing issues so if you use that source to overlay then you have to correct that first). Also be careful about the missing frames from the two death star officers shot, people tend to forget about those changes (I think theres also an extra shot from the prison control room shootout omitted in the SE but I can't be sure). And of course the lightsabers--preserving the original lightsabers will be tricky. Good luck with that!

Color-wise its good that you are using the GOUT. IMO its the best reference for original colouring--theres little to no color issues beyond maybe a bit of a bump of the contrast and saturation, but I think that simply makes up for the small amount of fading done by the duplication and aging of the film. The black levels are not strong though but simply in terms of coloring its one of the best references to use IMO.

Wow! I have to say, that looks leagues better than the blue-cast that scene enjoyed (or, rather, didn't enjoy) in 2004, except for the black level in that export being a bit too bright. That's easily fixed, though.

Color filter pass... I'll have to remember that next time I'm cutting in Premiere.

I just watched the video and all I can say is wow. I have been searching for a version of star wars worth watching and you have done. I hate watching the 2004 release so I am down to watching the dvds I have of the original laser disks transfered over, and they hold nothing to that quality. I can not wait to get my hands on a copy of that when you are finished.

I thought I just drop in some shots of the recreated crawl I'm working on. It was proven by the most scrupulous of nerds that the GOUT original crawl is, in fact, the original 1977 crawl and not a digital recreation. Given that, I took a screen of the blank HD star-field from the broadcast source, put the GOUT crawl over the starfield, luma-keyed out the black space on the GOUT, chroma-keyed out the white stars, and boosted the red and green on the remaining matte to give that yellow/golden color we're all used to. The Star Wars logo you see receding in the back is from the Spanish language angle on the 2004 DVD, which does recede at the correct speed. The results I'm getting are pretty good, though in motion stair-casing develops as the matte starts to recede into the back, and I should probably try to bring out more stars in the back, but overall good progress.

I've even done some cool things with the Alderaan/Death Star explosions, luma-keying and chroma keying out the space from the GOUT, leaving just a matte of the explosion that I put on the HD star-fields which hopefully will look rather nice. I need to carefully run through and manually color correct this thing still (getting better and better at this).

Right now I'm just wondering how many sound-mix projects have been synced to the GOUT. I edited my project to sync frame by frame to the GOUT, so I'm looking for every audio mix I can shove onto the disc. Does anyone know a comprehensive list? I know the wonderful restored mono mix syncs to the GOUT, and the several projects that have come from both Belbucus and Molly (though where these may be obtainethed is a mystery ). If anyone knows/has, it'd be a great help.

As well as the '77 mono mix, Belbucus also gave us the '77 Dolby Stereo mix and the '93 THX Digitally Remastered mix synced to the GOUT.

The '85 remaster has been made available, but I don't know if it was GOUT-synced or not.

GOUT contains the same '93 mix in AC3 format. Obviously it's been compressed in terms of size/bitrate
and also possibly compressed in dynamic range compared to the PCM track Belbucus provided.
(I'm confident Moth3r knows this already, but other readers might not.)

Belbucus also did an "Isolated score bridged with audio from the '93 mix."
Although I haven't listened to the whole thing, I believe none of its music overlaps any of its dialog or sound effects.
Seems it would be a straightforward procedure to distill a true isolated score (music only) from it, if desired.

Molly took seventiesfilmnut's raw rip of the '85 remix (from the '89 "shrinking ratio" LD) and sync'ed it to GOUT.

Great work, Paul. Some input, if you want to look into it: while the Tantive IV corridors look almost perfect with the colour correction, there is still a few cyan stains here and there (the screenshot with the droids is a good specimen: I see one in the top-left corner).

Are you going to adjust the black level as well? The black of space on the screen shots look a little grey to me. What do you think?

You know, speaking of the mono mix (who was talking about that?,) I think I noticed something. The alarm used on the Tantavive matches an alarm heard somewhere else in the Star Wars universe... I'm thinking ROTJ Death Star, but I can't put my finger on it. Anyone know?

I think I need to re-adjust my monitor, someone mentioned something wrong with the black levels in another clip i posted. God dammit if I have to go back and do everything over I'm gonna pissed!

it's the same alarm sound heard on the Death Star in ANH when the officer informs Vader that there are 30 rebel ships

the blacks of the starfield look fine to me and my monitor is calibrated but some of the other shots look a little too light in the black areas. i hope my monitor is ok or my edit is screwed.

I'm sorry if I pissed you off in any way PaulisDead2221. Your work is amazing. Its just that to me shouldn't the black of space match the black of the upper and lower bars? Because I can really see a stark contrast there. The bars look almost completely jet black....maybe that's what is tricking my eyes.....the black bars are making the shots look grayer than they really are? I worried about bringing this up, but your work is so good I didn't want to not say anything and be disappointed.....

Regardless, please don't take anything I said harshly, you and others here arte doing things on your computer I could only dream about doing....
