This is an attempt to recreate the original version of Star Wars, using the best sources available. For the color, I used the auto-correcting, avisynth based histogram technique developed in this thread, combined with pretty much shot by shot manual adjustment. To get rid of the special edition material from the film, I used a variety of sources.

First I have to say great work.

I like that all the different mixes are included.

I always get confused by the difference between the original mixes. Can anyone tell me which mix I will have to listen to to hear.

    - The original Beru voice
    - The C3PO tractor beam line
    - "close the blast doors"

There is no such thing as an "original Beru voice". They're both dubbed. It's never Shelagh Fraser's voice.

What makes you think that ? I have to check it at home once more, but if I remember correctly, it's only on the mono mix (counting only theatrical mixes)

All reports I've heard say it wasn't, and the comparison between the tape recording of the 4.2 mix and the 2.0/1993 mixes said that like those mixes it didn't have that line. o.O;

It's looking good! The difference using the HD encode is substantially more than I would have expected, too! Not to be a prty pooper, but have you run into any weirdness as in some of the ESB stuff?

Well, it's going fine. Not a lot of huge updates. I have only nine days left in school at this point, so it's not like there's homework of course, just wrapping up a lot of things. Prom night was last Saturday, so I got some time to work on the project cause it was a great break from having my head inside an oven (tear...). I put up another one of my own matte fixes in the first post.

I haven't run into the same weird things that I ran into in Empire. I've run mostly into hue adjustment issues, which I've taken care of manually. So all is good. On a scale of 1-10, it's hard to say the difficulty of the histogram work in avisynth. The histograms have really helped with taking care of small details, I couldn't have gotten white walls on the Tantive on my own, but I definitely needed to go in myself and make sure C3PO was the right hue and everything...I suppose a 3 or 4 in difficulty, getting it to look good enough to start editing with.

I've tried everything to get the stars back here, it's one of the rare shots where there still aren't a reasonable number of stars that can be seen in a properly lighted room, even with an HD source and brightened video. I've tried a chroma key function to get rid of the black and put a layer of bright stars underneath it, but it does that thing where the non black parts start getting all choppy, you know what I'm talking about? It's not in this frame. Well anyway, maybe it's the quality of Premiere Pro's function, I might give avisynth's layer function a shot, hopefully it's better.

Does anybody know how to do a chroma key in avisynth? The manual didn't have any specific examples in the layers section.

I'm not 100% sure how will it look, but in theory you can use Avisynth.
1) With ColorKeyMask set black on this source as transparent
2) Use this scene from 2006 (resized properly) as the base layer
3) Put the 2004 layer with transparent layer over the old source

It should be something like this (GOUT is this scene from GOUT resized properly, SE is this scene from 2004 release)


Layer(GOUT, ColorKeyMask(SE, $000000, 10), "add", 255, 0, 0)

if this recreates the original star wars in watchable quality i'm all for it keep up the good work.

the 2006 GOUT Star Wars 1977 is an absolute disgrace it looks awful even on my non widescreen television.

Smearing and artifacting everywhere, this was a problem during the premiere of the dvd player with there being only single layer movies from laserdisc masters, but in 2006 when there are stellar anamorphic movies out unacceptable.

not only is the 2004 set ruined by bad mixing on a new hope, apparent matte boxes visible, cgi that don't belong in a seventies or eighties movie, and poor color correction. they also ruined the 2006 bonus disc by using a bad master tape from 1993.

it is an absolute joke that the only watchable copy i have of a new hope is fan produced, and has pal speedup. Moth3r's. I heard citezens was better but that is not available as far as i know except through trades.

in Moth3r's pal star wars episode IV: a new hope you can see the starfield that seems to have been lost in all the ntsc home video releases.

Luckily restoring the crappy original mattes of the soldiers on the sides of the door was easy because it originally looked so bad anyway.
Do you absolutely have to restore the crappy original mattes of the soldiers on the sides of the door? I guess I see why a real purist would want them back, and there were a few CGI changes made that sort of ticked me off, but this shot really did look terrible, and it takes me straight out of the movie every time I see it. The SE shot was a real improvement. Anyway, just my thought. This project looks great by the way, keep up the good work.
