These new 4K HDR discs are the best I’ve seen these movies look and sound by several orders of magnitude.
I eagerly await the next Harmy Despecialized!

The D+77 and D+80 releases are quite great if you don’t mind less than 100% despecialization (some recomped shots, etc).

Where can I find more information on these releases (D+77, D+80)?

Create an account on forums.thestarwarstrilogy.com. The D+77 and D+80 releases are there, along with several other projects.

Yeah, I’ve created two accounts there but I’ve never gotten my account approved by an admin so I can browse the forums. 😦

Wait a second… Can’t you just use your originaltrilogy.com login? I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ve been using. Haven’t logged out in a while so…
As I recall I learned that here, that you don’t need to create one just use your OT.com one…

I think you do need to create a separate account. Or at least, that’s what I did.

They want you to create an account with the same username as your OT account, I think.

Yeah I don’t know what the requirements are now, but when the site first opened they would only approve an account there if you had an account here on OT.com with a certain amount of participation/history. And you had to use the same handle.

Quite the contrary, they look spectacular:

The 2020 blu-ray images are nice to be sure, but does anyone else think these frames look a bit warm on the colour balance and lacking in contrast?

I guess those are nice problems to have in a way, not too much of a problem to solve.

Look at the final screenshot from Empire. The 2011 BD screenshot is closer to the scene as I remember it from all the physical releases up to 2011 and stills from the film. The 2020 frame is much more grey-blue or ‘Jim Cameron Cobalt’ maybe 😉

It does seem like they did indeed finally ditch the Lowry POS master as a source. Anything and I mean ANYTHING that company ever touched is atrocious in all sorts of ways.

While everything so far seems to indicate that this is the Reliance 4K stuff we’ve been discussing back and forth it also appears to perhaps be the final LFL led SE master where they inserted even Maclunkey before handing over the reins. So I’m a bit torn now. I was avoiding these like the plague and have no use for the 19SE or the frozen grain and other tomfoolery that shows they have no desire to properly care about proper film presentation-and yet this is so much better than anything we’ve officially gotten visually since…well since the 97SE LD release actually.

Darn it i’m not going to let them dangle the bloody carrot at me…the fact that the BD.com review is harsh says something-they’re almost NEVER harsh when they should be and the audio “reviews” are more of a joke since there only generalities for the most part.

But the Prequels are all kinds of ugly. ROTS seems ok and they will never be all that nice to look at. I’ve heard AOTC supposedly gets rid of the teal color shift of the BD which would be great.

But TPM is APPALLING. Sure the main source is a roughly 2K filmout of everything done long ago but to take that and rescan for the 3D release and hit 100% with overzealous DNR and processing then bring it to 1080p and then upped to 2K and then uprez that to 4K…it’s hideous. And all they had to do was present the source untouched and it would at least look ok for what it was. they seem to go nuts with over-processing the image in each format. The LD is bad, the DVD is bad, the BD is bad and now the 4K polishes every aspect of a visual turd.

Those who have picked these up, what do you think of the sound mixes? The prequels have always had great audio but TPM has never sounded as good as the LD audio to my ears and I still think they started tinkering on AOTS/ROTS audio on the 2011 discs.
I would hope the OT at least now sounds better than the 2011 mixes but reports seem to indicate it is still the base 2011 mix with those changes still intact.

TPM and AOTC are up on capsaholic:

They did not change the teal infusion on AOTC. Darn. The caps show everything as just a whole lot darker. That could be the capturing software though.

No, that’s how it looks.

If it wasn’t clear enough on the 1080p blu-ray, the 4K blu-ray highlights how the live action footage in AOTC is full of compression artifacts native to the camera, not the transfer.

I’m aware that the negative for TPM is essentially a print of the 2K DI. But of all companies, can’t Disney have access to the original camera negatives. I don’t buy the fact that Lucasfilm hasn’t stored them, somewhere. WB has been putting in an insane amount of effort into their 4K transfers. Wizard of Oz and 2001 were scanned at 8K and given a 4K DI. Pretty much any WB restoration is now being done in 4K. Sony’s had 4K DIs of pretty much most of their library ready for about a decade or so. They’ve been mastering in 4K since Spider-Man 2 in 2004. Same with Criterion who doesn’t even release 4K UHD discs as of yet, but most of their own restorations have been in 4K, even for black and white movies. Do they even have half the resources Disney has? I doubt it. No, this isn’t some issue with the film industry for classic releases. Pretty much every studio is restoring their own back catalog in native 4K, except Disney. Hell, Batman and Robin and Batman Forever, with all their outdated primitive CGI glory have gotten native releases, and their presentations are getting rave reviews. Sorry, I just don’t buy that the most historically massive film franchise ever, can’t be afforded a proper 4K transfer.

I’m fine with good upscaling for the prequels, even if the digital footage will certainly show its age. The masters were meant for a 3D release and it shows, since detail is basically wiped out with 3D.

I’m not exactly a fan of how MCU movies look even if they’ve been mastered in 2K.

Its been said several times that the 2K filmouts ARE the original camera negatives. Yeah the can rescan the negatives but they cant re render the CGI which is 99% of the movie.

Furthermore, there was NO DI for TPM. The first movie processed through a Digital Intermediate was “O’ Brother where art you”, one year after TPM.

I noticed that the on the uhd discs for ANH & ROTJ they have hardcoded subs for the alien language parts, while the foreign language versions have these sections without hardcoded subs , via seemless branching. Going to be a pain in the ass for editors wanting to use them as a source. I don’t know if the blu-rays are the same though.

Not too much of a pain if people are informed that 800.mpls gives you hardcoded subs. At least the clean versions are on the discs.

The 4K prequel discs are the same way. Rise of Skywalker is not, and doesn’t seem to use the standard typeface for forced alien subs.

ANH caps are up. https://caps-a-holic.com/c_list.php?c=5424

This comparison just shows how good the new ANH transfer is.

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x=579&y=295&d1=13932&d2=13929&s1=141341&s2=141307&l=0&i=8&go=1

Even this shot here https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x=217&y=215&d1=13932&d2=13929&s1=141343&s2=141301&l=0&i=6&go=1 (2019 recomp?)

A 97 render. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=3&x=538&y=316&d1=13932&d2=13929&s1=141335&s2=141312&l=0&i=14&go=1 Makes me wonder if these are scans of the 97 filmouts or captures of the filmout tapes like TPM 2011.

Would really like to see a comparison with this shot https://vimeo.com/89784677

Oh wow. Looks like it’s hiding a black line on either side of the screen, but rather than ruin the pixel to pixel mapping that you get with a simple HD to UHD upscale, they’ve warped the side of the screen to hide it. Very interesting.

I think that the 04 HDTV is still the best version of AOTC.

It shows how much better this transfer is.
It’s still not as good as it should be.

Better than an on-the-cheap color-mangled DVD master from the early 2000’s ain’t good enough for you?

While “Star Wars: The Maclunkey Edition” has some appeal, I’m considering dubbing this version “Star Wars: Ultimate Hunter Edition”

Star Wars will be around longer than any of us.

The quest for the best version of Star Wars will be too.

These new 4K UHD discs are just another rung on the endless ladder. Collect as much of that ladder as you can while you’re here.

For many here, the best official release of Star Wars has been gathering dust for about 25 years, and has yet to be surpassed, even by the new 4K discs. The 4K discs represent new raw material for fan preservations, nothing more. I don’t see any scenario under which I would actually watch them, although I may buy them as required by the rules of fan edit ownership, should a worthy fan edit arise.

Oh wow, I’d never seen that before. I had no idea what they began their broadcasts with but of course they played Star Wars first, haha. I knew that MTV started with Video Killed the Radio Star but I didn’t know there was a whole countdown and then a dedication to Asimov, and then STAR WARS as the beginning of the Sci-Fi Channel.

Such humble little beginnings for what would eventually become… whatever it is now, LOL! Thanks for posting that.
