I like the ‘Rey as balance’ theme, which I feel like the trilogy was kind of setting up, then didn’t exactly deliver on.

What if we end with a voiceover, as follows:

  • Pre-ending, we play up as much inner darkness (to save my friends) as possible
  • Rey visits Tattooine
  • We see her friends have come on the Falcon with her. She has a new family. (They stay on board)
  • Rey buries the lightsabers, ignites her own. It’s gold. Something new.
  • “Who are you?”
  • Voiceover begins, as we see her look away to sees the spirits of her adoptive family (Luke and Leia) and an implicitly redeemed Kylo Ren, then she re-boards the falcon
  • Voiceover is cut from some of her lines on TLJ during her training: “Who am I? Violence. Peace. Cold. Warmth. Death. Life. Dark. Light. I am balance.”
  • Falcon shoots off into hyperspace against the twin suns.
  • Final VO line, either “I am Rey” or “I am the Force”.

I think such an ending must be earned by the film, otherwise it might come off as forced, odd and perhaps even preachy.

Because the ending as is is absolutely earned and doesn’t feel forced at all… 🙄

I’m absolutely loving the “Rey as balance” idea and am in agreement with RogueLeader wholeheartedly on his interpretation of the “light vs. dark” stuff.

And I’m surprised at how much I’m into the “illusion Palpatine” idea but am not convinced at all that it can be successfully pulled off in an edit.

Great write up, Omni! I actually think we’re on similar pages.

I think we both agree that a true Jedi must acknowledge the dark side that exists in them, and they shouldn’t let the dark side control them. But in my opinion, we never really get a moment where Rey acknowledges her dark side.

What I’m suggesting is that Rey can have a moment in the film where she does what is referred to in Jungian psychology as “shadow work”. Sure, shadow work in real life isn’t about shooting lightning from your fingertips, but Star Wars is all about the metaphor. But it’s like you said, one must confront and understand their own dark side, but Rey never does that.

The thing is, we know that Rey is afraid of, more than anything, herself. Not Palpatine. Herself. So, how is her overcoming Palpatine satisfying in any way, shape or form? What is the ultimate boon that Rey earns by the end of this film that she can bring back to the ordinary world? Rey’s arc over the course of the trilogy has been to forge her own identity and learning to accept herself for who she is. If Rey learned to accept this final aspect of herself, it might actually be something the entire movie seemed to be setting up.

Perhaps it is the wrong move for Rey to use the lightning to defeat Palpatine. At the very least I like the idea to make Rey’s lightning she uses on Pasana yellow. Not only to separate her use of it from Palpatine, but choosing to make her lightsaber the same color as her lightning might be enough to show that Rey has come to acknowledge that dark side in her. I hope that makes some sense.

Also, thanks Ash and Idir for your thoughts! Again, I enjoy your input Omni. These are my favorite kind of conversations.

I wouldn’t count it out, after all the ability on these forums keeps going up and I’d say there only need to be a half dozen effects shots to make it work:

-Stone box on Mustafar being disguised as a boulder
-Wayfinder in Death Star disguised as a pillar
-Tendril-like life drain from Sith Cultists to Palpatine
-Image of crystal revealed to Rey beneath Palpatine’s illusion
-Breaking of crystal with lightning
-Crystal fragments strewn across the floor

And maybe some new dialogue from Palps to Pryde

Another reason I like the idea is that it concludes the meta commentary on the fan base that TFA consciously or unconsciously began in 2015. Now the presence of Palpatine and Rey Palpatine can merely be a comment on the desires arising from some corners of the fanbase without actually forcing them into the story where they don’t belong.

I know many people are eager to remove Rey Palpatine, but I fear that in so doing they remove a lot of what I will call ‘wtf factor’ that makes the ST fun as an experiment in shlock (this is the only way I enjoyed TROS). In the end the film will feel lighter and less interesting for never even countenancing this bad idea. But with Fake Sheev the film can have its cake and eat it too.

JEDIT: The connection between the wayfinders and the Sith Crystal could be indicated through sound design. Have a similar distinctive hum or resonance whenever Rey or Kylo is in their presence, and continue this same sound when they confront Palps. It might just be in the background through most of the fight, but after the Jedi aid her Rey’s senses could be augmented enough to hear this sound and identify its source. Have Luke’s voice saying “Breathe. Just breathe. Now reach out…what do you see?”

What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. Come, lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy.

That’d have been a really interesting story to have gone with. I think you’re spot on about continuing the meta-commentary, for sure.

It’d be a huge feat, though.

On first glance I misread this as “I am hyperspace”.

I… quite like this

edit:

Thinking about the Palpatine illusion vs Clone thing I am torn as I actually love that Rise of Skywalker is an adaptation of the Dark Empire Trilogy. Snoke as an imperfect Palpatine Clone, etc…

But as said it doesn’t necessarily service Rey’s arc. 😕

If Rey HAD used Sith Lightning herself to ultimately defeat Palpatine, it would’ve worked in a narrative sense since the trilogy was strongly suggesting that a more balanced approach to light and dark was the new Jedi way. I honestly was surprised they DID NOT have her use Kylo’s saber and Luke’s saber together to reflect that.

It’d be hard to edit the lightning into a Dragonball Z style fight, but theoretically there’s enough closeups of Rey and enough arm-only shots to make it feasible.

What I’m about to say may sound absolutely stupid to you all, but this comes from what I heard since the film was still in post-production, so I could be in the wrong for writing this post, but we’ll see what happens.

According to test screening reports, mainly orchestrated by YouTube user Overlord DVD, there was originally a scene during the climax where Palpatine’s force lightning blew up the Millennium Falcon, taking the lives of Lando, Chewie, C-3PO and R2, and was described in short as “the saddest moment in the film”.

As of now, there exists no substantial or conclusive evidence of whether or not this scene exists, but I am sure that some of you have contemplated how the Falcon should be dealt with in the film. The other day, I saw an old post on this thread describing the deaths of Lando and Chewie in the Falcon’s destruction, summed up as such:

The legends are dead.

No doubt destroying the Falcon in such a manner would have been a huge risk for J.J. Abrams or Lucasfilm to undertake, and I’ll be honest, I actually thought they were going to go through with it when I saw the film in 4DX 3D. I guess my assumptions were proven wrong.

Nevertheless, the very idea really puts new meaning to the phrase, “Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.”

“The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.”

I was so surprised to see the shot where they all lifted their arms like that! I was not expecting that!!! 😆

problem: new shots, out of sync music

That’s looks very good amigo! what if it could be implied that Luke threw her the second saber? Maybe having his hand raise before she catches it. I also wonder if the last close up shot of the ghosts could be Anakin instead of Luke, implying that he delivers the final blow, him being the chosen one and all that.

A purple saber version and I’ll drop it in. I think we’re going to see this in many edits to come!

I would leave it at that, after all, luke has more prominence in the trilogy.

Bravo! This is the closest thing we are going to get to a special edition of the sequels. Lucasfilms wishes they could have delivered something this epic for the ending. Can’t wait to see this integrated into the final film with Leia’s purple lightsaber.

This got me thinking, is someone working on exactly this - not a fanfix, but just the actual movie amplified with small changes such as these? Other changes would include the sort of shot extension that Dom has been working on to slow the pace by a few seconds, ending shot with the falcon flying off into the sunset, D-O extended squeaky wheel scene,… but no actual deletions of scenes/lines, however disagreeable they are

Really like the idea of this…hope someone is able to take it from a concept to a reality. Do you plan on this being a lead in to the First Order Council meeting the the film?

Sure, shadow work in real life isn’t about shooting lightning from your fingertips, but Star Wars is all about the metaphor. But it’s like you said, one must confront and understand their own dark side, but Rey never does that.

Arguably, Rey start her path to integrate her shadow when she saves Ben. After that she repressed her darkness an try to exile herself on Ahch-To, when Luke reminded that “facing fear is the destiny of a jedi” and that’s her inner fear, the “origin” of her darkness, Palpatine. She faces him and he plays the “you have no choice but to join me” game. When Ben, Rey’s shadow, arrive giving her a fighting chance against her biggest fear. The Dyad, in my perception, is the “prime jedi”, as Rey and Ben struggled with light and dark, not to find a “Grey side”, but to recognize the darkness within and overcome it, two that are one.

Rey Skywalker is the culmination of this, even if the movie does not do a good job in selling it. Maybe Ben doesn’t appear cause he, as her shadow, lives - integrate - with her now (that’s the only way I can justify his death).

That said, I agree with your perception on the force all the way. Very good analysis.
