Firstly, imply more training.

Agreed. I just don’t think from the beginning of TLJ is sufficient, given that already in TFA she–

a) flies the Falcon as well as Han, though it seems she’s never piloted a ship before;
b) resists Kylo’s Force-probing of her;
c) Force-compels others; and,
d) defeats Kylo-friggin’-Ren in her first-ever lightsaber duel.

Secondly, lean into the ‘she’s using the dark’ angle. Luke explicitly says “You went straight to the dark” in TLJ

This is great, and thanks for the reminder of Luke’s line here.

Personally, I’d supplement this with someone else’s idea to have her kill her own parents accidentally.

I agree with most of this, but why do people keep saying Rey never flew a ship before? She specifically tells Finn that she has. Does it not count because it’s just one short line? Because if so, then why do we write off Luke “Bullseye Womprats in my T-16 back home” Skywalker’s ability as making sense? Thirty pilots went into the battle of Yavin, only three came out, and Luke was one of them.

Fair enough. Your take is always well thought-out, I’ll give you that!

Bear in mind, though, that self-sacrifice (or a deserved consequence) doesn’t negate forgiveness. We see this now and again in actual murder trials where the victim’s family forgives the killer, yet it doesn’t negate or contradict the court’s duty to punish them.

I dunno, maybe I’ll leave Ben’s fate open-ended.

Star Wars is for 12-year-olds. It’s a fairy tale. Most kids don’t have genocidal tyrants as parents, but a kid that has a rocky relationship with his dad might relate to the struggles between Luke and Vader. The physical scar of Vader cutting his own son’s hand off is meant to reflect the emotional scars a parent can deliver to their child (perhaps some physical ones as well). I don’t know if I could forgive my dad if he literally cut my hand off, or if he killed my own mother, or tortured my sister, or was a literal serial-killer but seeing Luke forgive his father, and still have faith in his inner good, could help me be able to forgive my own father for things he’s said and done in the past.

It’s the exact same thing with Ben Solo. Ben Solo is the kid that has gone down the wrong path in life. They’ve lost their way. He’s hurt or disappointed the people who love and care about him. Ben Solo represents the idea that even if you’ve done bad things in life or have disappointed your loved ones, you can still come back from that and make amends. This message would be much stronger if Ben Solo actually survived and had to continue his life on a better path. Paying for your actions through self-sacrifice works for a paternal figure like Vader, but the same ending for a coming-of-age character like Ben is, in my opinion, weak and lazy writing. Paying for your actions through death is a rather pessimistic resolution for a character that younger audiences are meant to relate to. I’ve seen so many people get hung up on this idea of Ben Solo being a war-criminal or mass-murderer in-universe, but it seems to me many Star Wars fans forget what purpose Lucas always intended for these stories to serve. They measure Star Wars on the standards of reality rather than allegory.

Here’s the original cue sheet from John William’s scoring from a longer cut of the movie circa 11/10/19 if anyone wants to take up what’s “missing” (or even the order of the scenes, which ended up being totally restructured for the first half of the movie):

Honestly after seeing the film twice, the only major change I’d make would be to have Rey and Ben both die at the end.

To me, Star Wars is a brand that means quality, just because it’s a bad SW film, doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie.

Perhaps one of you very creative fans could help me. I’m nearing completion of my rough cut of a more radical edit that removes Palpatine entirely. I feel that having Palps survive RotJ is on the worst things you can do in Star Wars. Kylo is searching for a lost Imperial/Sith fleet. The duel on the Death Star remains now occurs simultaneously with the fleet battle at Exegol.

The two main problems are 1) Finn and Poe basically abandon Rey on Kef Bir once she takes the skimmer in order to get them back to Ajan Kloss for the Exegol battle. 2) Rey is still looking for the wayfinder among the DS ruins after the fleet has already made it to Exegol. If anyone has any creative fixes, I’d love to hear them. Otherwise I think this version is working well, although it’s cut down to about ninety minutes.

Maybe you could cut Hux’s death (or save it for later), and have him be the one to send the signal that leads the Resistance to Exegol. You could probably just do this by changing some dialogue.

As for having Poe and Finn abandon Rey, here’s my idea, though I’m not sure if it’s possible: Have the heroes go straight from Kijimi to Kef-Bir. Then as Rey sneaks off to find the wayfinder, the Star Destroyer shows up and Finn (not Rey) is the one who senses Chewie’s alive and decides to go rescue him.

On an unrelated note, I continued recoloring the finale.
I was wondering how one could add a visual component to the “Voices of Jedi Past” sequence, and so I thought that - since I was already playing around with the colors - I could try making it so that the light shining on Rey matches the lightsaber color of whichever Jedi is speaking currently. I also made a few other changes in honor of Carrie Fisher.

The “colors of the Jedi” seems pretty interesting! Also it would be less distracting that having the actual Force ghosts appear (though I kind of wished for that to happen as well).

I also onboard with Green Mist Exegol. A couple of days ago I revisited the Son of Dathomir story (in audio-comic form) and remembered that Sidious used to exchange knowledge with the Nightsisters of Dathomir. That, and the fact that the witch Talzin’s resurrection very much parallels Sidious’ comeback (to the point both characters drain a powerful Force-user’s life force to restore their physical shapes). The greenish tint to Exegol could serve both to make the planet more interesting to look at, and serve as a fun Easter Egg (connecting it to the green-mist appearance of the Nightsister spells) that hints to the “unnatural dark side abilities” Sidious could have used to return.

For those going the Rey Palpatine route, what do you think of setting that up at the get go? I believe that’s the way it was intended in original script and it would spare us the tacked on reveal above kijimmi. When Kylo asks Palps “who is she”, he could reply with a cryptic “Our blood” or “One of Us” , which may or may not hint at palps creating
Anakin skywalker and would give more credibility to Rey Palpatine taking the skywalker name.

Edit: For the Rey nobody angle I think it’s important to expand upon the reason Palpatine wanted her on exagol, her significance to the overall story and most prudently the reason for her innate darkness. I think this should also be covered at the get go, here are a few options, although there are many ways to go about this:
“Who is she?”
-“a vergence, destined to be sith
-“a wound in the force, destined to be sith
-“an awakening in the force, unseen for generations, destined to rule.”

I was thinking about if some creative audio splicing could have Palpatine say “I made Rey” rather than Snoke and just leave it at that. The Rey/Palpatine connection is still pretty trite but at least it sounds more like a thing he would do and could remain somewhat cryptic, Rey as his literal granddaughter is just too dumb.

I think just leaving it at that would still leave a lot of questions without answers.

Well, officially his son wasn’t actually his son, but his clone. Not sure how that could be made clear with audio splicing, though.

Replace I made “Snoke” with “her”, When talking about Snoke you could say, “I am Snoke” or “I trained Snoke”, depending on your headcanon.
-“her” is from “kill her” later on in the film.
-“trained” is from “Snoke trained you well”
Otherwise ROTS is an encyclopedia of Palpatine dialogue lol.

This is a half-joking idea, but if we wanted to reveal that Palpatine had a surprise grandchild, wouldn’t it be funny if it was actually Hux?

In the films themselves, it’s never really explained why such a young officer like Hux has so much authority within the First Order, even over older, more experienced officers. The films don’t really paint the picture of a young, brilliant officer who works up the ranks through his cleverness and ingenuity. Hux is portrayed as someone who is rather arrogant in his abilities, despite his moments of incompetence. In the books, it is explained that his father was a high ranking officer in the First Order, and he basically was given his position through inheritance. You could keep this idea, but it turns out his inheritance is actually a lot more significant than we thought.

You could keep Hux alive until the final battle, and have him speak to Palpatine instead of Pryde during the hologram scene, and Palpatine could even call him his “grandchild”. Yes, Hux isn’t Force-senstive, but neither was his actual son (or clone son) in canon, apparently. Also, young Palpatine was always depicted as having red hair, so Hux already fits the physical description as his potential grandchild. And if it was revealed that Hux was the heir to the Empire, it would add another layer to why Hux is so desperate to depose Kylo Ren and take over the First Order himself. He feels like it his birthright.

That’s… surprisingly really compelling. But where would you get the footage? To my knowledge, there’s only been one deleted scene with Hux released, and it’s the one where he taunts Rose.

Well, the shots of Pryde speaking to Palpatine are all static, so you theoretically could mask out Pryde and replace him with Hux, if you can find an appropriate shot of Hux just standing, like when Snoke’s hologram appears on the bridge in TLJ, before he slams Hux to the ground. You could create a close-up of Hux looking at the hologram as well, possibly. He doesn’t really have to say anything at all, Pryde only responds once in the entire scene. And then you could reuse shots of him on the bridge of his Star Destroyer (and possibly the Supremacy) to have him present at the battle of Exegol. It mostly would be a lot of masking him into certain shots, and color grading certain shots to have them match the surrounding shots.
