Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 51

I’m still cranking away on the TROS: Resurgence edit and running into adobe proxy file issues. What else is new!!

But here’s the cave scene with the serpent. Instead of it being sick and misunderstood, it’s not injured. Now Rey does not heal it and it senses the dark side within her. I like this much better…

Here it is:

Pretty cool! I was half expecting to hear Rey start speaking Parseltongue, haha.

If anyone has some free time, I was wondering if someone could do a mock-up of intercutting between the Bespin finale shots from TROS and ROTJ to see if they mesh at all. I’m curious if combining them would actually feel seamless. I think it would be cool to reuse the other two crashing destroyer shots for PT and ST planets, like Coruscant and Canto Bight, but that will require some vfx to splice shots together. You could also replace Jakku with Tatooine, and Endor with Naboo, maybe. I definitely want to see if the Bespin shots even work together, at least.

I was wondering if anybody had thought about attempting to make Exegol more red? I know people have desaturated the blues but in the first teaser if I’m not mistaken it looks like the shot of the A-Wing going down (1:31) is an Exegol battle shot, yet everything is warmer.

I’m definitely considering it. That’s more the way Exegol looks in the Art of book.

One of the challenging things about recoloring Exegol is the lightning. So if you recollect Exegol to a red hue, the lightning will presumably have a red hue. Might not be a bad thing but it may look strange.

Yeah it’s a pain. The blue lightning, the blue lightsabers, etc. I’ve been trying with what limited color correction knowledge I have, but maybe somebody with more experience can work something out for fun, even if it’s not the most necessary thing.

Pretty much, which is why I’m aiming for something a bit less drastic, still keeping some of the blue but adding some other color in as well.

Maybe we can go for something more orange, sandy perhaps, make it feel like Korriban.

There’s also this alternate shot of Resistance fighters approaching Exegol, with a sunset sky and no lightning effects:

All the other shots of Exegol in this trailer have a dark blue sky with lightning effects, so it’s clear by this point they were already starting to change the look of the planet.

My preferred saga experience:
TPM/AOTC/ROTS (Hal 9000), ANH/ESB/ROTJ (Despecialized), The Mandalorian,
TFA (Starlight), TLJ (Fallen Knight), TROS (Resurgence).
May the midichlorians be with you.

Hypothetically, what would people want in terms of additional Mustafar shots?

An establishing shot such as Kylo’s ship landing on the planet or something like that to slow the pace a touch before the existing montage scene?

Everyone was pretty miffed when we found out the Oracle scene wasn’t coming out, but what would the ideal content from that scene have been?

Presumably the Oracle wouldn’t have done anything crucial to the story as the scene was ultimately cut.

What made me think this is I saw a sculpture someone made recently of the Oracle from the artwork and it was such a good quality sculpt it made me think really, the scene would’ve probably been a couple of distant shots of the Oracle, and a couple of close ups. It didn’t look like it would’ve moved around loads, so I’m tempted to try to sculpt one myself, but just wanted to bounce ideas about what people hoped for from that scene.

If it was just a kylo has a chat with the Oracle who points at the wayfinder, then it’d be useful to have a model with one moveable limb, so didn’t want to sculpt it as a test just to then wish I’d done something different if it could’ve potentially be useful for someone’s edit.

Great ideas man, I think an establishing shot of Kylo’s surroundings with Vaders Castle in the background somewhere would be sufficient pacing wise.

Speaking of more Mustafar establishing shots, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone suggest using stock footage. Adobe Stock has some pretty cool footage of both forests and lava rivers side-by-side. The lava would help the audience mentally connect the planet with Mustafar, as well as establish the burning forest Kylo is in. Here are some good examples of that kind of footage. With proper recoloring it could be made to match the Mustafar scene well.

The big con is that it will cost money to use any of that footage. But I would be willing to help pay for it if Hal or others discovered the perfect shot to use. On the plus side, we won’t have to worry about stealing someone else’s footage off of YouTube, because we paid for it. Also, we can use high quality, 4K footage, rather than a YouTube rip. Might be something to think about.

Not sure if it’s a good idea to license footage for something like this for a fee.

Okay. Well a lot of those shots come from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, so maybe we can find similar types of footage on YouTube somewhere.

EDIT: But maybe it would be best to stick with Star Wars footage and just reuse an establishing shot of Mustafar from Rogue One, and just remove Krennic’s ship.

Maybe we could add in a silhouette of Vaders Castle in that doc footage that Chase Adams used.

True, true. If we really wanted to see Vader’s castle, I really think the simplest solution would be to use this shot from Rogue One. Mask out Krennic’s shuttle, and regrade this shot (and maybe the TROS shots) to make them match each other as close as possible.

Reusing the same shot from another Star wars film could be problematic, I mean if we have no choice left than I’m down but I think it would be better for continuity’s sake to create a new shot.

That’s definitely true, but I also think you can also run into a different set of issues when trying to use footage from outside material too, know what I mean?

If were to reuse that Rogue One shot, we could always regrade it then flip it horizontally to make it feel different. If I ever reuse shots, flipping it is my go to strategy for making it feel different. Haha. 🤷‍♂️

I also think you have to consider the purpose of the establishing shot. If it is just meant to be a buffer for pacing, then you really could use any establishing shot. But if you wanted to make it clear that they’re supposed to be on Mustafar, then reusing a shot might be the simplest way to make that clear to the audience.

It would be preferable to have a brand new shot, but it would require some vfx work if you wanted a new shot, but also add Vader’s castle.

Not trying to argue, really. Just trying to say the pros and cons of the different options.

I think we’re probably on the same page on this, flipping and grading the shot will likely do the trick, i think playing around with masking a still image or matte of the castle into a background would be pretty doable also.

I agree with you! Have any of the test establishing shots people used been decent enough quality, like 1080 or 4K?

Author

Nice. The text that keeps popping up sort limits how much we can use. Enough for a quick shot I guess.

Ugh! I was legitimately engaged in the discussion before someone managed to bring up my stupid forest establishing shots! I’ve said before that I’m not going to bother with Mustafar anymore. Anyone care to share any screenshots of a colour changed Exegol, just for the sake of changing the subject? 😄
