Can we just remove Jannah? Like she can be there with the Resistance, but we don’t really need deserters on Kef Bir, do we?

Author

Why would you remove her? Why go through all that effort.

That’s be removing the only worthwhile thing about the character.

I am removing force healing from my edit. So, Kylo dies on the death star after being stabbed by Rey. In other words, Ben is never redeemed. As a result, Rey cannot be healed by Ben, so she tragically dies after defeating the emperor.

Also, I am removing the entire McGuffin chase. Meaning Rey goes straight from Leia to the death star to find the wayfinder. Its an imperfect solution, but its workable, and it removes the worst parts of the movie IMO. It does a great deal to fast track Rey Nobody because it removes Ochi and the flashbacks about her parents.

This is probably much different from the direction other people are taking, but maybe it will spark some ideas.

I’m intrigued by how well this might work, though I don’t know how well eliminating the search for the Wayfinder stuff will work without cutting the movie down to less than 90 minutes…

Then why bother making a fan edit if you’re locking yourself out of ideas because it’s “established in canon?” This is a bad reason for not trying something unless you’re explicitly making a “canon edit.”

I understand that. I see that most agree on making big changes. I meant that i personally prefer when an edit improves the narrative, tone and pacing of the story, but doesn’t contratict it.
I’m really enjoyin these ideas here, don’t get me wrong. They could be much better than the original.

That’s definetly the worst part of the movie. Pasaana could be completly removed, it was boring. Maybe keep some of Kijimi? It was cool to see a planet occupied by the First Order.

So basically a HAL edit.

Yes, please, someone color correct this movie…

TROS

When will color grading move past these overdone hue shifts? I thought we were done with the green filter in the 2000s! My take below, agree with others you don’t want to make it too far neutral the colors should still reflect the emotion of the scene, it’s just my opinion scenes and sets that looked just fine get hidden underneath grades that get too carried away trying to change the look for the sake of it.

Random thought, I wonder if we could frame Snoke as Palpatine’s apprentice, basically like the Sequel Trilogy’s Dooku, rather than him being a literal puppet Palpatine controlled. Either the crawl could mention Kylo searching for Snoke’s master, or you could change the dialogue to something like this:

Palpatine: At last… Snoke trained you well.
Kylo: I killed Snoke. I’ll kill you.
Palptine: My boy… My apprentice was weak… But I have been every Sith.
Then Kylo walks past the cloning pods, which are filled with young Palpatine clones rather than Snoke.

We could also start playing up Palpatine as a Sith collective-consciousness earlier on. Since Snoke was old and malformed, Palpatine never saw him as a suitable candidate for possession (this would give Snoke’s physical characteristics a purpose in the story). Snoke presumably learned his powers from Palpatine and did his bidding, which would involve seducing Ben Solo to the dark side, taking control of the First Order, destroying the New Republic, and killing the Jedi. All in preparation for his master’s return, or to usurp him.

Really, such a change would give more agency to both Snoke as a character as well as Kylo Ren. Because if Palpatine was Snoke, does that mean he foresaw Kylo killing him? And if he did, like if it was a test or something, doesn’t that take away a bit from Kylo’s big moment?

To be honest, I’m okay with puppet Snoke, but I do think it is still not 100% clear. If you asked different people on this forum to explain the Palpatine-Snoke relationship, they would probably have varying interpretations: Snoke was a mindless puppet, Snoke had his own mind but was influenced by Palpatine, Snoke was a clone of Plagueis or another Force-user, Snoke was a homunculus fabricated by Palpatine, etc. etc.

I think the idea of Snoke being his own person, and being the apprentice of Palpatine, might just be a cleaner alternative. It leaves less room for confusion, I think.

Some additional random thoughts about some of Leia’s scenes:

I think if we add some extra off-screen dialogue here and there for Leia, it might help make the interactions feel a little more natural and have a better flow. Sometimes it feels like people, specifically Rey, talks to Leia while she just stands there.

One example I thought of would be when Rey is telling her about the Wayfinders. Rey says she has to go, then Leia just says, “No.” I was thinking after Leia says no and it cuts back to Rey, Leia could start saying something else, like a reason why she disagrees, and Rey interrupts her. I think it would help it feel more like a real conversation.

Also, when Rey hands Leia the saber, she says, “I will earn your brother’s saber. One day.” I think this could be changed to “I will earn your father’s saber. One day.” “father” could be taken from her line, “He killed my mother, and my father” from later on in the film. Later, when Leia hands it back, I think it would be great if we gave her a line like, “It’s yours.”

A real small thing here, but I think it would be best to remove discount Motti from the conference scene, or at least trim his lines to not mention a lack of faith in a cult. It reeks of TFA’s requelitis, copying a scene from ANH beat for beat.

Author
Time

It’s so metaphorical!

Honestly, I would keep the officer that questions the Sith cult. Imo, these are the kind of things Kylo is probably wondering himself. He knows Palpatine must be wanting something in return, but he is still trying to figure that out. Really this officer is just expressing his own thoughts. Which makes it weird that Kylo then smashes him into the ceiling. I actually think it would be better to cut him doing that, and leave Kylo actually lingering on the officer’s thoughts.

That’s a good idea. That one in particular really sticks out. She says “No” and then Rey has a whole conversation by herself. If there’s a fix I’d love to see it. Something short and simple like “It’s too dangerous” or “You’re not ready.”

I like it. Personally, I think “your family’s saber” would be more fitting and more meaningful, if possible.

Maybe we can find some clean Leia dialogue from the Lego TFA game. Does anyone have those files?

Ahhh, that would be good. And she says family a few times throughout the movies, so you probably find a good sound sample to use.

My attempt at reducing the color cast (more screencaps in each comparison):

These look good Nev! The Rey screenshot looks a little reddish, but that may just be me.

No that’s fair. When trying to remove a cast, it’s difficult to avoid going too far in the opposite direction. In this case the green and blue had to be reduced, and this meant that the red was always going to be more prominent. Maybe bright yellow/red scenes will need individual correction, but I bet with more delicate correction these scenes can be preserved.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

These look great, much more of a throwback look. Personal preference truly, I actually don’t think the Rey is too much red but I’d say in both of the Rey stills you’re kind of shifting into a more monochromatic look, less pop of the green jungle vs. Rey, and the sky vs. the desert. Probably a little too far in that desert pic in general (look at Finn’s pants and the stripes on his vest).

Just watched the TROS documentary and I think I spotted a few extended shots here and there that could be used, Luke and and Leia’s duel could be extended, an alternate take of the “Rey skywalker” delivery with Rey crying as well as a few shots of empress Palpatine on the throne, extended Rey and D-O, kylo on passana, kylo placing Vaders helmet etc.

Also for colorists be mindful you’re not crushing any existing detail at least before finalizing, noticed in the Ren fix (which I still prefer) the blacks reduced the amount of information in the padding of his outfit and some of his hair.

Yes, I really liked that take of the Rey Skywalker scene, she said it in a more solemn way. Maybe we could keep the tear too.

Maybe there is a very slight amount of detail loss in the deepest blacks, but if you look at the histogram the red channel was already being clipped before the correction. The green and blue channels were elevated, which created that bluish haze, so either I raise the red floor (which would cause undesirable effects) or decrease the blue and green to more closely match the red.

Thanks, throwback look is what I like! Agree that the desert shots are not quite there yet.

Right, I was about to add that only so much can be done coming from an already finished grade as the base, for example those tricky teal shadows, I made a new version to remove them though I wouldn’t want it to be at the loss of the scene’s character. Still, with selective color tools and high resolution we have a lot of room to work with.

I also enjoy the throwback look! Overall my color preferences lean naturalistic to give my bias.
