I loved the tv spot that used Duel of the Fates so I took a stab at recutting the song to fit the first section of Rey and Kylo’s Duel. Did some color correction as well.

I was against this but I actually think this works pretty well. I’d be worried about it seeming like it comes out of nowhere in context, but maybe you could tease it in the preceding scene (and maybe even the Force duel as well).

One thing I’d do personally to differentiate it is use the instrumental only version, especially as choral pieces are less common in the ST scores.

I’ve been trying to find some variations but most sound too trailer-ish. Maybe some live orchestras make it sound a little different.

Yeah that’s exactly what I was thinking of. Although listening to that again, I’m not sure if they ever actually released an instrumental version or if this is just someone’s fan edit, trying to remove as much choir as possible. Regardless, yeah I think the less choir the better as it’d stand out in this score (less so the eerie chanting bit from the back half of R2Poodoo’s video, because there’s some similar sounding stuff in the Exegol portions of the film).

If the scene already had music I’d just try to work in a single instance of the “dun dun duhduhduh, dun dun duhduhduh.”

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Really rough, done in a few minutes, but if anyone is interested in adding Force Ghosts to TROS, I think there is a decent number of shots that could be used. I know that many don’t like this idea, but anyway…

This one could be just after the ghosts’ apparition. Just mirror it and it looks like Anakin is staring at Palpatine.

This is all looking very good from my end, aka an outsiders’ perspective.

Let me just say that these people a very very right:

Rey’s parents really shouldn’t matter. They sold her for drinking-money, and as far as I’m concerned, they can just as well already have died of liver cirrhosis or something. Somewhere, sometime. Doesn’t matter.

The less we hear about Rey parents in Ep9 the better. Best to continue with the TLJ plot line and keep Rey Nobody and deadbeat parents as is. IMO the whole Rey and Palpatine grandkid dynamic just doesn’t work. I understand what they were going for, but the execution of it was a failure.

In regards to the “Rey killed her parents”-twist idea, I am somewhat torn. I agree that it would be a really cool twist and is probably doable with the material, plus inserting a child’s hand, some desert background and some lighting is achievable as well. On the other hand, what exactly does this accomplish despite having a twist?

One thing I would really like to see is somehow, retroactively, giving some more meaning to Rey’s vision in the dark-side cave in Ep8.

For seventeen years the renegade Pfhor scoutship jumped between the closely packed stars of the galactic core. And all over the ship, dancing through the wreckage of the Pfhor computer core, Durandal was laughing…

Rey feels insecure about the darkness she perceives inside her, especially as it presents danger to her loved ones. Having a repressed memory of killing her parents would fit in naturally.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Cool! I wonder if there’s ever been an alternate recording of the track. That may help it feel like it’s what was originally done.

Clearly you’re looking for this version, right?

Here’s another version I found suggested when watching the last one, but it still has the choir.

The only place where a choir would likely feel appropriate without adding one throughout the trilogy is when Palpatine has a literal choir on standby at the end. Besides, the character is associate with choirs.

Well I did do some test footage but the results weren’t exactly professional.

Exactly, I don’t know that perfectly white balancing every scene makes it better when there may be artistic intent behind the grade. That’s not to say you can’t make it better, though.

This is what bothers me so much when I see people complaining about color correcting. I think sometimes people misunderstand the “correcting” part of the phrase. That said, of course it’s fair to have personal opinions on grades.

Something people miss too is sometimes it’s not just the grade. Like the Star destroyers being so blue, that’s the lighting playing a part as well.

Absolutely. Where a blanket sweep “look” or “style” does become an issue, though, is when an entire film in a trilogy doesn’t match the other two films. It makes for a really jarring viewing experience when watching back to back to back. Lord of the Rings is a great example of a trilogy that succeeded at having a consistent aesthetic and color grade across all three films.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I think that since it’s already established in canon that Rey is a Palpatine, we should just keep that, improve it but not deny it, even if we don’t like that narrative decision. Changing something like that it’s too big.

I think Hal will keep Rey Palpatine in his edit, so there still will be versions with it. Many people also want to see a version without it, regardless if it’s canon or not.

I personally think Rey Palpatine needs to go. I couldn’t care less what the canon says.

The question then becomes, what could replace it as Rey’s main character conflict? I think the 3 best options are:

  1. Palpatine killed Rey’s parents, and she wants revenge.

  2. Rey accidentally killed her parents, causing a conflict over her inner darkness.

  3. Nothing happened to Rey’s parents, play up the Dark Rey vision sequences instead.

Option 1 is probably the easiest, given that not much would have to be changed. Option 3 is the second easiest, although it might result in a lot of footage being cut. Option 2 is the most difficult, although the payoff might be worth the extra VFX work.

Either way, I hope we find a good solution soon. Fixing Rey’s story is the main editing request I have for this movie.

Any ideas on how to keep Ben alive?
“as I once fell, so will the last Skywalker” is depressingly anticlimactic considering the title of the film.

I’ve also been thinking about that. It’s not a big deal for me, but I still wonder if it could be done.

Just like I posted for removing Rey Palpatine, here are the top 3 suggestions I think could work:

  1. Leia resurrects Ben after the healing scene, using the footage of her body disappearing.

  2. Ben has no consequences for healing Rey, matching how the power was shown the previous times it was used.

  3. Cut Ben rising out of the pit, but add him to the Tatooine scene to confirm he survived the fall.

I think Option 1 is by far the best, and someone on YouTube already posted a rough edit of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQYXtnsjsf0

I like the idea, but I wonder if it could be executed well. Even in that video, the reused shots are somewhat obvious.

I mean, that wouldn’t match how it was used before, at least not the first time. In this scenario you’d want to cut out Rey clutching her hand after she healed the snake and her saying that she transferred some of her life to it. I feel like the people surprised by Ben’s death must have missed this, for me I knew right away when he climbed out of the pit what was going to happen.

I don’t think you’d want to cut Ben climbing out of the pit. As well, I think you’d have to have him on Tatooine even if you don’t have him die after healing Rey.

What I meant with “matching the other times” is that Rey never seems to be affected by healing other people. She didn’t seem any weaker when she healed Ben’s fatal wound. I agree that it doesn’t match Rey’s description though.

Yeah, it’s probably not a good idea. I just saw it suggested by some people before the movie came out, when no one knew about the healing scene.

Could you be a bit more constructive? What don’t you like about it, and why don’t you see the point of keeping Ben alive?

I mean, same as you said. The reused shots are obvious, I don’t think it work. I also don’t see the point of this solution specifically, not keeping Ben alive in general.

Then why bother making a fan edit if you’re locking yourself out of ideas because it’s “established in canon?” This is a bad reason for not trying something unless you’re explicitly making a “canon edit.”

I’ve seen multiple people talk about the idea of hinting at the return of the emperor earlier in the sequel trilogy so that it doesn’t feel as out of nowhere as it did. Here’s a mockup of an idea that could be a sort of epilogue to TLJ and possibly replace the broom boy scene. It would hint at Kylo’s new mission/goal to find the Wayfinder.

I think TLJ should end with Kylo finding Palpatine, revealing him to the audience, and maybe broom boy, order undetermined. You could even end with that shot of the Falcon interior that feels like an ending fakeout. But this is a RoS thread, so let’s get back on topic. We can discuss this in Sequel Radical Redux.

I am removing force healing from my edit. So, Kylo dies on the death star after being stabbed by Rey. In other words, Ben is never redeemed. As a result, Rey cannot be healed by Ben, so she tragically dies after defeating the emperor.

Also, I am removing the entire McGuffin chase. Meaning Rey goes straight from Leia to the death star to find the wayfinder. Its an imperfect solution, but its workable, and it removes the worst parts of the movie IMO. It does a great deal to fast track Rey Nobody because it removes Ochi and the flashbacks about her parents.

This is probably much different from the direction other people are taking, but maybe it will spark some ideas.
