Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 2

I get that, but I feel some things could be cut. I feel like the opening battle with Kylo is totally worthless.

I agree that it was worthless but it’s because they cut out everything that was worthwhile from the sequence.

If the leaks are to be believed, (which they should because they were generally right) the movie opened with a broadcasting tower surging out of the ground of Exegol and we actually see/hear Palpatine’s message being sent to the galaxy.

Kylo has been tracking down clues to Snoke’s power and he slaughters the villagers (in what I think is the healed forrest of Mustafar) to the dismay of Hux and Pryde who consider the whole thing a fool’s errand.

Kylo was said to get a meeting with an Oracle alien who challenged him on still having feelings for Rey and who ends up telling him that he can find the wayfinder device in Vader’s castle (this device belonged to Vader and the one in the DS wreck was Palpatine’s). Apparently that’s when he was supposed to get his first PTSD force flashback like he does later on and hear Palpatine’s voice for the first time.

Cut to Rey training scene essentially just like it was in theaters except it’s said that she was trying to contact Luke’s ghost to no avail (which if they would’ve kept in, it would’ve made his return as a ghost later on much more impactful).

After Rey hands Leia the lightsaber, it was supposed to cut back to the Knights of Ren and Kylo getting his helmet put back together on Mustafar by the ape-man. This ape-man apparently also helped him activate the wayfinder device. AND THEN…
we get the scene of Kylo getting to Exegol and meeting the Emperor.

There’s shots of Leia in the teaser reminiscing about Han by holding his medal. This would’ve made, not only Han’s appearance much more emotional but also it would make it seem less out of place that Chewie suddenly gets a medal at the end.

Lando’s first appearance had him explaining that he never left Passana after Luke and him where there because he had a daughter who was kidnapped by the First Order and he was afraid to leave in hopes that one day she would return (it mirrors Rey wanting to stay on Jakku in hopes of her parents coming back). This strikes a chord with Finn because he was also kidnapped by the FO. Knowing why he didn’t wanna leave would’ve made Lando’s entrance at the Rebel base much more impactful. Not to mention his scene with Jannah at the end was meant to suggest that she was said daughter.

There was build up, set ups, character introductions, thematic through-lines that got smothered out of the film just so they could cram it into the shortest runtime possible. This way they get more showtimes and keep it at a family-friendly length.

This movie, unlike any other Star Wars movie, is aching for an extended/director’s cut, because the one in theaters clearly ain’t it.

When Rey was deflecting the lightning from Palpatine I was expecting all the force ghosts to appear around her like the ghosts appear to Harry in the Goblet of Fire or Deathly Hallows. Instead we just hear voices and it was nice hearing everybody. Hell, even Freddie Prinze Jr as Kanan and Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka had their voices in there along with others. The little problem I have with that is I could only make out Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christenson, but I have zero clue what any of them are saying cause they overlap a bit too much. I could only make out Ewan saying “these are your final steps” and I think Hayden just saying “Rey, don’t give in” or something similar. I never even heard Liam Neeson or Samuel L. Jackson who arguably have the most recognizable voices of the bunch.

Maybe also inserting Anakin at the end with Luke and Leia on Tattooine without making it look too awkward like those old ROTJ Qui Gon edits on YouTube would be nice, especially if somebody were to put Ben Solo’s ghost with them if anybody, as it kind of felt incomplete seeing him vanish but not popping up as a ghost at all. It’s also funny to know that JJ just kind of stuck with “they had the force so they’re ghosts” idea when in canon it’s a whole process to become immortalized. Like when did Mace Windu or Luminara do any of that?

Maybe we should have seen or heard someone (or a few people) in the background listening to a recording of Palpatine’s message in a scene at some stage in the film? Maybe it was this that finally insprired or scared people throughout the galaxy to take up the fight against him and the FO?

Maybe one of you talented people will conjure up something? 😃

I’m kind of new here but I have some ideas on how to edit Rise of Skywalker. Before that, it’s starting to seem to me that how much people enjoy this movie is inversely proportional to how much they liked Last Jedi. Those who hated Last Jedi seem to really like this one while those who loved Last Jedi seem to hate this movie. I seem to be an outlier where I loved Last Jedi, it’s my second favorite, but I also loved Rise of Skywalker. There might be more deleted scenes to work with, I hope so, but as of this moment here’s what I would do.

First off I’d like to see if we can remove Chewbacca’s fake death. It’s a cheap attempt at emotional manipulation that almost completely ruins the tension in the final battle. This might also necessitate the removal of the Force battle between Kylo Ren and Rey with the transport. I’d like to remove this because people die and come back to life way too often in this movie. In keeping with the removal of Chewie’s fake death, I’d like the remove Zori Bliss from the end of the movie. I don’t think this would be too difficult, as I don’t remember too many shots of her in the final battle/ending. Having her actually die on the planet when it blows up actually gives some more emotional weight, even though she’s an extremely minor character I’d leave in the stuff with C3PO because they mine it for the best comedy in the trilogy. I’m fine with it because he’s a droid and not a human, so the explanation they use makes sense.

Another change I’m flirting with is removing Han from the film. Mostly because it’s literally just Harrison Ford and Adam Driver repeating their lines from the Force Awakens. We can just have a shot of Ben looking pensive and then throwing away his saber. Again I may or may not cut this because I’m not opposed to having this in.

My most controversial change would be removing Rey being Palpatine’s Granddaughter. It just raises way more questions than it answers, and it just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’s also way too similar to Kylo Ren’s arc for my liking. I’m not sure how doable this would be, but I’d love to see this as I loved how she was a nobody in Last Jedi

I also like the idea of removing the opening fight scene between Kylo Ren and the villagers provided deleted scenes don’t flesh this out more.

I might also see if we can remove Ben bringing Rey back to life. That would remove their kiss which I do like, but I don’t like the idea of bringing another character who we thought was dead back to life. The film does this way too often already. I’d just change it so Rey doesn’t die at the end, and the last we see of Ben is him getting flung off the cliff by Palpatine. As I’m typing this the idea is losing its appeal because it makes Ben’s arc feel incomplete. I don’t think I’ll do this, but I’ll leave it in in case anyone wants to try and go with this.

One other change I’d like to see is the removal of Rey’s healing abilities. I’m not sure how doable this would be, but I do have an idea of how to pull it off. Just have Rey not stab Kylo Ren with the saber. After Ben stops, I’d like to see if there’s a shot of him sitting down, and then we could immediately cut to Rey’s conversation on how she did want to take his hand.

A final change I’d like to see is the removal of the final scene on Tattooine as it’s really unnecessary and only serves to justify the lackluster and overly silly title. I’d have the film end on the fade to black after Rey, Finn, and Poe hug. This would also prompt a change to the title of the film. Maybe it could be called Rise of the Jedi instead.

At this point Disney would be wise to release an Extended cut a la Batman v superman which actually redeemed that film for many people.

Someone suggested cutting the light skipping thing and I don’t think this would be a bad idea.

Was me and yep its just not needed

The scene of Rey and Kylo fighting over the transport on Pasana, I think the wide shot needs to be altered to make them feel farther apart. The way this scene is paced makes it feel weird as to why Kylo doesn’t pursue them, or why Finn doesn’t try to shoot Kylo.

Exactly what I thought when I watched it why did’nt Kylo persue 🤔

Speaking of Pasana, a few other ideas:
Does Lando really need to be here? I felt the scene of Kylo commanding local troops to get there, and then a Stormtrooper being right there in the next shot felt so weird! I really think you could cut straight to Rey telling them Kylo knows they’re there, and then stealing the speeders.

The first order trooper did seem to pop up out of nowhere and as you discussed here makes more sense.

This might seem unnecessary, but I think it would be interesting to regrade Pasana to make it Jedha. I know it may seem unnecessary, but both planets were filmed at Wadi Rum, Jordan, and if Ochi hunted Jedi relics, it makes sense for him to go to a Jedi planet like Jedha. You could create a new shot of the planet with a big chunk blown out of it, maybe with a ring around it. Having a ring or debri field would make sense since the crew hides in an asteroid field immediately after leaving the planet. Maybe they hid in the asteroid field hoping the First Order would leave. It would help explain how the Knights of Ren knew where they were as well. Again, it may feel unnecessary but I think it would make the planet more interesting and give the location more history.

Sounds great but is that too much of an undertaking ?

After they wipe 3PO’s memory and they’re about to board the Star Destroyer, 3PO says something like, “Whoever this Chewie is were saving, this is madness!” This line feels lazy to me. I think it would be funnier if 3PO could have a line that played well off of the gang just rushing off the ship and blasting everyone in their path. Something that makes you think they’re gonna be sneaky or something, and then BLAST BLAST! I also think 3PO should not have his memory restored.

3PO got his memory back wa to which also do we NEED 3PO back at this point ?

I have no idea how to alter it at this point, but I think the whole Goonies-style “lining the dagger up with the Death Star ruins” feels so strange! Why would Sith loyalists make a brand new dagger with the coordinates of the wayfinder’s location in wreckage that could easily collapse an no longer match the outline of the dagger?

Hehe very true, at least we did’nt have Palpatine rip his robes off screaming HEY YOU GUUUUUYYYSSS!

When Han and Ben have their conversation, I think it would be interesting to overlap Han saying “Ben” with Leia saying “Ben”, to imply Leia is speaking to her son through Han.

Also Hans a memory/ghost here not a force ghost so when he touches his face somehow stop Bens hair fom moving with Hans touch also maybe add an echo or some distortion to Hans voice and blur image slightly to show hes a ghost/memory.

In my opinion, there is just not enough context to explain how or why Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter. Palpatine had a son? It just feels super convoluted to me. If removing this idea altogether would be infeasible, I think Rey being created by Palpatine would make much more sense. Anakin was implied to have made by the Force as a reaction to Plagueis and Sidious’ growing power. Sidious said Plagueis had the power to create life. If this was true, and if all the Rule of Two Sith have been in fact one Sith, then Sidious would know this too. Maybe Rey was made by Palpatine to be the perfect vessel. She was supposed to be what Anakin failed to be.

Rey being another “The Chosen One” created by Palpatine and how we now understand the Rule of Two Sith would make sense here.Palpatine’s granddaughter will be explained later via comics/books at a later date no doubt.

But despite my problems with the film, I think there is hope in the fact that now we have the whole picture, all nine films. Pessimism isn’t in the spirit of fan editing, because we find ways to turn problems into solutions. If the long-term consensus of this film turns out to be rather poor, I do believe we can turn this film, and the whole saga, into a really spectacular series of fan edits. I’m really hopeful about the future of these films!

Me too, the force is stong with this one 😉

Very well articulated thoughts, like always! I hate petitions over trivial things like movies, but this is the one time I wouldn’t mind if fans made a petition to release an extended cut of this film.

I agree 100% with RogueLeader, for the blood tie we should create a dialogue where Palpatine reveals to Rey that she is Han’s daughter and that Han was Palpatine’s hidden son on Correlia, since in Solo we learn that this is not the original surname of Han, we can imagine the dyad Palpatine + Skywalker more intense for Kylo since it would be a mix of the two families, which in the end are as powerful as each other in the force, what do you think? (Sorry for my english)

I always get worried about disrupting continuity. I seem to get blamed for that a lot.

I’m so glad you brought this up! I don’t necessarily need an extended cut, but TLJ-quality deleted scenes at the VERY LEAST. Based on the leaks, they probably have a ton of unused footage - I’m curious to know how much of it has finished fx.

Personally I don’t think Rey should be a biological Palpatine at all. She shouldn’t have any important blood ties in my opinion.

Unfortunately I doubt we’ll find out until April, or whenever the home release is. That is what worries me though, because TFA didn’t have much deleted material to work. Since IX was the last film, maybe they’ll be more willing to show more unreleased material.

Author
Time

I’m hoping they still release a lot of the deleted TFA scenes. I remember hearing a lot of descriptions and JJ talking about stuff they shot with Korr Sella on Hosnian Prime or something, but they barely released much. Now I fear we might never get a lot of the footage as I’m sure all or most of the deleted TFA Leia footage is in TROS and they might not wanna release that footage ever in fear of people watching it and then not unseeing it when watching TROS. I agree that as the last saga film they should go all out and release as much deleted scenes, behind the scenes, etc. as possible.

Palpatine is the most glaring issue. He shouldn’t be here. He should be long gone. Far better if it’d been Snoke. Palpatine in TROS is making me seriously consider not even bothering trying to reedit this whole trilogy.

Exactly. Sidious shouldn’t have been in the movie at all, because it completely ruins Anakin’s redemption and sacrifice in Return of the Jedi.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

Is there anyway we can fit in the message that the fight against evil will always continue or something like that? This is what I’m thinking. Before Palpatine dies we once again hear his line “I’ve been killed before,” or whatever it was. But there has to be some sort of response from Rey along the lines of “we’ll always be there.” Then you cut out the shots of all the star destroyers blowing up around the galaxy. What I’d really want to is instead of a hug party, to have a scene where they come back hugging, get a transmission about the next mission to stop the FO, and then head off. Then the scene with Rey on Tatooine. Don’t know how to do any of this.

Author
Time

I have some ideas:

  • Remove Sidious revealing that he created Snoke, as well as the shot of Snoke bodies in the bacta tank or whatever. Make a new opening crawl for The Force Awakens mentioning that Snoke was some dark-side warlord or whatever and formed the First Order, modeled after the Empire.

  • Remove the shot of Rey and Ben kissing.

  • Remove every single mention of Rey being Sidious’ granddaughter.

  • Remove the audio clip of Mace Windu, because neither Qui-Gon or Yoda taught him how to become a Force ghost.

  • Insert Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Yoda at the end with Luke and Leia. (No, it shall not be footage from the previous films, so it wouldn’t be obviously green-screen of footage from the previous films.)

  • Imply that Sidious is some sort of zombie.

  • Remove the old lady asking Rey who she is, and her saying that she’s Rey Skywalker.

  • Remove the shot of Rey’s yellow lightsaber. Why? The Sith and other dark siders are gone forever, so why have Jedi anymore?

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

Interesting ideas. I think we’d have to see what Daisy Ridley lines we’d have available. I could see something like

Emperor: I’ve been killed before.

Rey: I’ll be waiting. (From, “I know all about waiting.”)

To imply the fighting will continue, I could picture a few things. Maybe you could create new space scenes with some decent cg ship models. I could imagine a shot that mirrors ANH, where a Star Destroyer is being chased by dozens of Resistance ships. You could insert Poe into this scene somehow, either in an X-Wing or on the bridge of a cruiser. In general you could expand this idea and have different types of ship/space sequences that could help imply that idea.

You would have to film new material, but I would still love to see something with Finn that would imply something with Stormtroopers defecting or going on a mission to liberate children from the First Order.

A couple of minor fixes:

  • It’s weird that Leia dies, but her body waits to disappear until Ben’s body does. Moving that shot to right after her death would be pretty simple.

  • They make a point of saying how nobody answered their distress call from Crait, but then the explanation for how they get the MASSIVE fleet at the end basically boils down to “Lando made a few calls.” Cut the earlier line, and then imply that the closing fleet is simply the payoff for all the recruitment the Resistance has been doing over the past several months (or however long it’s been since TLJ).

I think the idea was that Leia was waiting on her son? But I just assumed they disappear as soon as they die. You would run into the issue where Poe talks in front of her body.

I had that thought about the ally comment as well. It is a nice little interaction, but I do think there should be an implication that the Resistance is growing. I don’t know how you could cut that line but keep the bulk of that scene.

Unless I’m remembering wrong, they said Leia was sending one final message to Ben before she laid down to die. I took that moment as Leia’s spirit literally going to Ben to save his soul (and that’s why he sees Han after her death, because she’s the one showing him), so when Ben died at the end it made both bodies vanish because he took her with him. I’m sure I’m dead wrong but that’s my thought process.

My only ideas for edits would be

  • inserting prequel planets in that montage they had with ONLY original trilogy locations.

  • inserting at the very least Ben Solo with Luke and Leia on Tattooine somehow

  • Carrie Fisher often said her lightsaber color would be purple, so maybe simply change the color of her saber to add a little bit of her flavor to it so it’s not only blue and red

  • maybe cut Finn’s “I never told you” stuff altogether since they never conclude that, but I’m pretty sure what we’re supposed to get is him having the force cause how else could he have felt Rey’s death like that

  • go to ImmersionVFX to give lightsabers to the Knights of Ren like with the Praetorian Guards since they’re heavily implied to be previous students of Luke’s

  • and yeah cut the kiss

Author

Love the idea of making Leia’s saber purple!

This probably would be a crazy idea but what if we added details to the Resistance planet to imply it they’re hiding on jungles on Naboo? You could regrade it to match Naboo more and potentially add those elder heads in different places in the background. I just feel like if you want to make a new planet, make it look new. If there isn’t something that makes it unique, then it could’ve easily been a place that can help ground the story in a world we’re familiar with.

Author
Time

The Rise of Kylo Ren comic reveals the Knights of Ren are not Luke’s former students. Oddly it also suggests Snoke’s facial deformities are caused by Luke and are thus presumably unique - but the other Snokes in the tank have them. To be fair there’s a good few other canon issues in this film to be retconned around besides that.

Author
Time

This and Solo are definitely the only two movies where I don’t remember any planet names, and I can’t find any online so I don’t even know if the Jungle planet is named at all. Either way that’s an amazing idea! I say we make it as Naboo as possible, and that way along with the purple lightsaber it can bring forth some Leia flavor that this film was intended to be, because of Leia’s maternal heritage. Even Rey has ties to Naboo because of Palpatine’s time in the prequels. When I go see it again tomorrow, I’m gonna look out for any shots to put those elder heads. Maybe put some rustic versions of those shiny, yellow Naboo starfighters from Episode I in some shots in the jungle and the final battle like the Ghost in Rogue One?

Apparently the Death Star wreckage is on an “oceanic moon called Kef Bir” which at first I thought was dumb because it can easily be the same moon as ROTJ as seen in the Ewok movies where there are plains and oceans. Now thinking I guess it doesn’t matter because they specifically say “forest moon” in ROTJ to imply there are other non-forest moons of Endor, so I’m fine with that now.

Another little change is to switch BB-8 with R2 at the ending somehow, because JJ really likes BB-8 so much that Rian had to ask him to switch them at the end of TFA. I think it’s weird not ending the saga at the homestead with R2, and Rey just kinda took Poe’s droid.

That guy looks like the ones Kylo fights in the first scene, which presumably takes place on Mustafar.
