Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 164

People post nonsense on reddit claiming to be insiders all the time. This post is so transparently trying to push some narrative that Lucasfilm/Disney ruined some mythical four-hour ‘JJ cut’, or that “Abrams shot two movies”, which is entirely unsubstantiated. The reshoots and cuts in TROS aren’t subtle - Mustafar is obviously cut down, Luke’s wig is obviously a reshoot etc. Similarly for Josstice League vs. the Snyder Cut: you can feel it. If Coruscant, Mortis, clones mixed with Phasma’s DNA (???) etc. had been cut, there’d be some trace in the final product, and there just isn’t. Ditto for the claim that Crait was originally at the start of TLJ - that leaves the movie without a functional third act; where would Luke project to? Would he just die on the island? It’s silly fanfiction at best, some weird attempt to slander Alan Horn and venerate JJ Abrams at worst. Plus “Heirs to the Force” is a fan-speculation tier title (to be fair, Duel of the Fates is too, and that’s real…).

Edit: Also, I can’t possibly trust anyone who sincerely believes DOTF ‘got Star Wars’ the best. That script ends with Yoda and Luke telling Rey how fantastic it is that she’s decided to embrace the Dark Side and that “narrow was their point of view”, entirely missing what Lucas was getting at the whole time. Yes, integrating your shadow is part of Star Wars; no, this doesn’t mean just occasionally choking people, as a treat. The dark side is addictive. Plus, “Rey Solana”? Why give Rey a totally arbitrary last name? If she had to get one, let’s be honest, it was always going to be “Skywalker” or at an absolute stretch “Solo”. Sorry, I’m ranting because I’m sick of DOTF being put on some pedestal just because TROS was also bad.

Right, Sparky. The way this guy describes the differences, though, he makes it sound like those major differences were actually filmed. At the most, the differences only vary from the JediPaxis’ initial leak and the final film, because like you said Sparky, these were changes made during late production/post-production/reshoots.

I still believe there is an expanded edition of the film that JJ would have preferred to release. At least 30 mins of content that would have made things more clear. But obviously Disney wanted to make more money, so he had to cut it down.

Personally I think JJ was capable of cutting it down on his own. Typically that’s his style, and it’s worked for him in the past.

The movie needed 30 minutes more, and it needed most scenes to have some room to breathe.

The same editing issues were there in TFA but because the story was so straight forward people overlooked it. But TFA rarely let’s the scenes breathe, its go go go from the first scene.
And that can be a good thing for some movies, but JJ did the same thing with Star Trek.

Compare JJ’s Star trek movies to the third one in his continuity, it’s like night and day. The third one let’s the characters have moments, so overall this is a JJ issue and a trait of his.

During the discussion awhile back about adding in Palpatine’s Fortnite message, there was a version where someone managed to fit in the entire message over the “Somehow, Palpatine returned” scene. Does anyone have it? I can’t find it

Eh, TLJ always felt like it had two third acts stacked on top of each other to me. The battles on the Supremacy is the first one. I guess you could have Luke project there. It’s unlikely they’d have changed Crait’s place in the story once principal photography started.

Abrams doesn’t do long movies though. The final product feels so Abramsy I can’t imagine it not being his cut. At most there might’ve been one scene or a few shots that were executively mandated, like how TFA and TLJ each had a moment included to lead into TLJ and DotF, respectively.

Oh and lol at that fake leak referencing an EU character.

Has anyone tried making a version of Rey and Ben’s kiss that has a hint of Across the Stars? I’ve seen versions where it blasts the score, but I was thinking just a nice little part combined with the original score like Hal did with Duel of the Fates in the Kef Bir duel, so it could allude to how Ben reviving Rey was him finishing what Anakin started by saving the woman he loved from death.

I’ll make a mockup soon, but I’m curious if anyone has already tried something similar. I’ll try different placements like when he crawls up to her, when he actually revives her, when they kiss, etc. to see what works best

The ending part of the “Across the Stars” suite has a more slow-paced, melancholic feel to it that might suit the moment when they actually kiss or after.

The moment where Rey is revived has great music as it currently stands, with a sweet rendition of the combined Rey and Kylo’s themes, so I wouldn’t really want to see it go. Besides, the score suddenly stops before Rey says Ben’s name, which is convenient and useful for changing whatever music goes after without affecting the earlier Rey/Ben theme.

I liked RogueLeader’s idea of introducing the B portion of Across the Stars to their hand moment in TLJ and then in TROS. But I don’t plan to implement it in my projects. I like the existing music in the scene, and I think it’d be confusing or weird to insert it there and nowhere else.

Then again, ‘Luke and Leia’ as Jannah meets Lando, so…

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

My thoughts exactly, I really like the original score but think it could be even better with a hint of Across the Stars. And like you said about the score cutting off, it’s pretty much asking to be edited haha

This started as more of a rewrite idea, but it’s theoretically possible to do this with editing (and also this thread has way more traffic than the rewrite ideas thread), so I’m posting it here:
One of the main ideas that a lot of fan edits are seeking to expand is the way Luke Skywalker’s sacrifice inspired the galaxy to rise up against the First Order, but that kind of raises the question as to how they know about it. So what if… the First Order broadcast the Battle of Crait? We take footage of Luke getting blasted by a hundred AT-M6’s at once, put some filters on it to make it look like it’s playing on a screen, and then add as many shots as we can of people throughout the galaxy reacting to it. Then, as the dust clears, we see the silhouette of Luke still there, and just as his face becomes visible, the video cuts out and we see the viewers react in shock and awe.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

A fine idea, but where would it go?

JEDIT: It would be grand if it could be shown on Canto Bight, that way the Broom Boy scene would make more sense. There’s also some extra deleted footage of that location, though I don’t know if any would be suitable. You would also probably need a line from either Kylo or Hux stating ‘Let the galaxy see their final moments’ or something like that.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

A few of us have, although I don’t have any links on me.

then add as many shots as we can of people throughout the galaxy reacting to it.

This is giving me PTSD of all those attempts people made at overlaying Palpatine’s Fortnite message over footage of the bar from AotC and whatnot. It really does not work well, which simply proves we don’t have enough footage. That said, it might be feasibly to obtain the necessary footage from scouring enough fanfilms.

Just add the Senate camera droid hovering around during Kylo and Luke’s confrontation.

I actually had an idea about adding one of those floating near Hux during his maniacal speech in TFA, to give the idea that it’s being broadcast.

My homeworld is Australia so be wary of timezones!

Perhaps you could even recontextualize Korr Sella’s reaction to the superlaser as being a reaction to the airing of that speech instead.

Well, it took 3 hours and still needs a ton of work, but here’s a mockup of what my idea would look like:

Dude that’s awesome! Kinda got chills from it. I don’t think there’s any canon source that states it was broadcast but it works as a strong headcanon that doesn’t contradict anything.

I think it might work better to start showing it as a broadcast before any of the reactions like at Canto Bight are shown, otherwise it’s a bit unclear what’s happening. And I like the idea of the cut-off at the end on his face, but the cuts between different angles make it feel more like a spy movie than Star Wars, so I’m not sure if it would really fit into TROS like that. Are you going to try to implement it in the actual movie somehow, after the crawl maybe? I’m not sure where it could fit in well since I feel like it would need to be the first thing after the crawl but that may be an awkward transition since the crawl always pans down to a ship flying around a planet.

Also, what are you going for with the shot of Aftab Ackbar?

That looks really good!

Need to watch it some more, but the only thing tripping me up (and this is probably just me) is having those insert shots of Kylo and the rebels AFTER you start showing the Crait shots as broadcast/reaction footage. I’d move them up in the edit to before that changeover, so once the footage starts, the only live shots we see are people watching the footage itself.

Great job!

“That’s not how the Force works!”
